The Official Japanese GP Thread 2012 ***SPOILERS***

Back to the racing !
Some very unsettled weather in Japan at the moment - Typhoon Jelawat is causing a lot of damage.

Tokyo is some 200 miles north west of Suzuka and will clear before the race weekend. Local forecast is a bit mixed depending where you look - but a bit of rain would make it interesting - maybe we'll see Kimi finally win a race in 2012!

I think it's going to be a Hamilton win and Alonso will of course pick up some points
Looking further ahead.. Alonso has this championship tied up - it's his to loose right now and that's a bloody strong position to be in.
Mclaren to get the constructors title ( about time they did it again ) Lewis to get within a few points of winning the WDC

Alonso doesn't have to win - he only need to score a handful of points per race and let the others fight. He's too mature a driver to throw it away. (cue Alonso throwing the WDC away)
He isn't that far ahead. Just 3 more races like Singapore with Vettel winning and he's no longer leading.Alonso hasn't won since Germany and I think he's natural position is 4 or 5th but he keeps scoring points and his rivals keep throwing it away.
So maybe it's still a 3 way fight - Alonso, Lewis & Vettel ( I don't see Kimi being part of it)
Mclaren odds on favourite to win the Team Champs

There are too many rules that drop drivers down the grid though. I do understand it is to try and get the teams to make the parts last longer and keep the costs down (although probably not) but it does make the sport look a tad silly sometimes.
There's been far too many gearbox penalties this year. Seems like at least one every race. IainT said:

Did Mclaren end up saying the knew they had a problem but thought they could get it to the end of the race and figured the 5 place drop wasn't worth it ?
They said they didn't know about the problem until some distance in the race where telemetry showed a sudden rise in temps, followed by a loss seamless shifting. They thought they would still finish but temps continued to rise, gears were lost and then it failed totally. This all happened over a few laps - no choice but to keep going. The PH forum really needs a "like" function

In fact at the team principals press conference Whitmarsh said he picked Perez for next year over Di Resta because Di Resta was too old. I think he's 26.
where did you pick this up from?Staggering if true...
Whitmarsh didn't exactly say DiResta was too old for them, just that Perez was younger.
He was saying that DiResta is as good as he will ever be, but Perez still has a way to go and could be one of the greats one day. That's how I saw it.
Diresta is as good as he can be (which is pretty good !)
Perez has the potential to be more than he is currently, but he has been flattered by having the option to start on the "right" tyre, rather than having to use the Q3 tyre.
Kobayashi has out qualified him this year but has fallen foul of having to use the softer tyre to start the races with.
In saying that, I've been saying that Perez is a real talent and next year will be very interesting
( Button to win the WDC in 2013 )
