Best road you've found lately?
Discussion
As per the title, what's the best road you've discovered in, say, the last few months?
For me I think it's the B660 between Kimbolton and Glatton. I know Evo is always harping on about it, but it wasn't until I ended up staying nearby that I had an excuse to try it out.
By any standards it's a pretty good road. There's a nice mix of corners from fast sweepers to 90-degree zigzags and some reasonable straights where you can get past dawdlers. But the best bit is the fact it's lightly trafficked and well-sighted, so you can tackle it with more commitment than would be wise on a lot of B-roads.
The B645 that leads you there from the A1 is also pretty good and you can turn the whole thing into a detour of about 25 miles if you're heading north on the motorway...

Which leads onto one of my favourite roads in the world, the A396
Hopefully the TVR will be trailered over one of the independent garages near Cullompton to have its new engine put in soon. That means I'll be near Exmoor for the drive home. https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?saddr=Church+Hill%2...

Ok, so I didn't find it lately. I didn't "find" it at all. One of my fellow HPC members introduced me to it.
Nirvana!
Bardney to Baumber, Lincolnshire. Also brings you to the bottom of the B1225 Caistor High Street, which is another beauty of a hooner.

I've not come across that one before, but driven quite a few of the roads around Lincolnshire. The fenland road layout works quite well - some nice tight bends, where you can lean on the car quite hard without doing silly speeds and then some longish straights where you can get past people doing a more leisurely pace.Nirvana!

I'm not sure if this counts, but I 'discovered' what would be one of the best moorland roads in Britain - certainly England - the other day. The only downside is it's on the New Forest, which means a blanket 40mph limit, wandering ponies and hoards of even slower moving tourists.
Unfortunately my OH was navigating and I'm not entirely sure where it was, I think it was Burley Road in between Brockenhurst and Burley (on to the A31):

This isn't a new discovery as such, but for the first time in ages I drove the B1004 from Ware to Bishops Stortford. It's a superb road with a couple of wonderfully tight hairpins under the trees early on and a classic stretch of winding British B-road to finish.
If you're in that area, the B180 from Stanstead Abbotts is worth a look too. And perhaps surprisingly so is Hollycross Road that runs from Stanstead Abbotts to a junction near the start of the B1004. As far as I can see on Google it's an unclassified road, but it's actually wider and better surfaced than a lot of B-roads.

Had an awesome accidental hoon at the weekend. I found myself in the Essex countryside in the early evening and decided I'd take the long way home.
I started off on what I thought was a B-road, but looking at the map I think it might have been the A1060. From there I picked up the B184, which to be fair, I've stumbled on before, and then on to the B1051.
The latter is just superb (if a little narrow in places) and handily leads you to the string of quiet roundabouts on the outskirts of Bishops Stortford. From where you can pick up the equally-glorious B1004 (which I've mentioned in a previous post).
Strange as this sounds, the highlight of the trip for me was coming across this layby on the B184:
I have a near-identical photo taken about six years ago of my old MX-5 in that layby the last time I got lost in the Essex countryside! I didn't live anywhere nearby at the time, but I was on the way back from my visiting my new girlfriend at the time and decided to take the scenic route.
I had such a fantastic evening that day back in 2006 the original trip ranks as one of my all-time favourite motoring memories. Half a decade later in what seems like a very different life it was fantastic to find the same place again - especially on another late summer evening in another chuckable little RWD sports car.

Not strictly new, but I spent a lot of time in rural Essex over the weekend and still very impressed by the B1051. It's just wide enough to be driven enthusiastically without being too reckless and traffic is very light by the standards of the South East.
My favourite section is the southern end between Stansted and Thaxsted, but the latter section (past Thaxsted) is good too, as is the B1053 that it joins onto.
Okay, the views aren't as special, but in terms of actually being able to make progress without too much slow traffic or too many draconian speed limits the North Essex countryside is hugely underrated.

Not exactly a new discovery, but having previously used it as the first 'fun' road heading out of London for a hoon I now live at the opposite end of the B158 and commute back in everyday.
Even with the traffic and the occasional quarry truck I can still pretty much guarantee a few bits of 'proper driving' every trip to an from work. Suddenly owning a fun daily driver would make sense again.
