I live in Whitley Bay (near Newcastle upon Tyne) and will be travelling to Chingford (North London) next Sunday.

Which route would be best please ?

The A19 (Tyne Tunnel) is about 4 miles from my house, so that could be one option ... or I am better with the A1(M)

Further down south, is the A1(M) best, or the M1.

Would the return trip be the same, although that will be on the Wednesday

thank you for any advice provided

I would take the A1 right down to Alconbury then the A14-M11 down to London as Chingford is only a few miles from the end of the M11 plus the M1 is full of roadworks at the minute.
I would never have thought about this route, but tried it and it worked very well. Had a quick break at the services just before the turn-off which was the first 'proper services' for quite a while.

Also returned using M11 etc.

Thanks for the advice !!

A1 is full of roadworks near me (Scotch Corner) - blanket 50 for 20 or so miles, so I'd use the A19 down the Thirsk, then get on the A1.
I used the A19 on the southbound journey and it was brilliant.

I came back via the A1 (I didn't notice A19 turn-off and wasn't really looking for it anyway) Was very impressed with the length of new 3 lane road, which I had never seen before, but as you commented, the new roadworks caused a bit of a delay, but nothing major. Anyway I was nearly home by then.
