Roads around Durham

Hi all, am up in Durham for the next week and should get an opportunity to get out for a couple of drives. Can anyone recommend any good roads, thinking of heading to Northumbria or NY Moors?

Thanks guys. Did the A689 to Alston then the B6277 to Barnard Castle - cracking road!

V bad RTA on the 689 which entailed a insterestingndetour whilst the fire and police services attended, hope those involved are ok.
