Norway road trip?

Having done a few roads trips on mainland Europe (usual suspects, alps, pyrenees, black forest, d roads, gorges) we are considering Norway this year. Its harder to get to as there's no direct ferry. Has anyone done this trip and whats the feedback - is it more about the fjords and the scenery than the driving?

The Atlantic road looks like a must do and the Golden route offers up lots of great scenery but would love to hear from someone who's been there and done it.

Our boys road trip is generally about the driving experience so maybe our usual hunting grounds are more suitable but am thinking about Norway now for a family trip.
