Road trip back to UK

Hello everyone,

I am in Italy with my UK car I was meant to come back to the UK in time for Mot but have had some serious issues.
I am now dur back end of the month and was wondering,
as I have not valid mot I have no road tax either I haven't Sorn the car as I understand you can only sorn in the UK, what are the implications of me driving it back, does border control check documentation.
I have insurance and have already booked a mot test in the town I live.
Any advice is much appreciated.

Yes I also was under the understanding that I should have a MOT booked and go straight to the garage without deviation once in UK soil.
