Ferrari 250 GTE restoration
Discussion
Hi guys, for those of you that know me then you'll know i change my cars more than my pants. However i have decided to embark on restoration that should take a few years of my life. I present to you my rusted out stbox of a Ferrari 250 GTE. Enjoy
I received a call from Ferrari in modena saying that they've got the perfect car for my planned restoration so they sent me these pictures first, don't even ask how i managed to get speaking to Ferrari in the 1st place.
After i got excited like a little school boy i rang them back, and speaking broken Italian i managed to haggled a good price, thanks Donatto.
They shipped it to Essex for me and then i had it shipped up north
It was then time to move it my friends place who restores some lovely cars, Escort Mexicos, 6R4s, MK1 Golfs, etc, etc
I have recently purchased the doors, bonnet and boot from various people like GTO engineering,
The chassis is being done and the next thing is to have the body soda blasted.
Stay tuned for more coming over the next few months.
Cheers
Pete

Looks like a cracking project, Make sure we are regularly updated
I can only go as fast as the parts become available unfortunately, i'm in a bidding war with some people of the engine (4ltr) and the gearbox, it's heading north towards the £70k mark. Haha and the lady thinks she's getting married, paff. AndrewW-G said:
In which case you need your head examining, you can source a rough, but complete and running 250GTE/330 America for less.
Yeah i know, i'm not too fussed about the penny pinching, more interested in just having a crack at restoring my first car. Edited by AndrewW-G on Sunday 12th June 14:43

How original is it going to be?
Will you be sourcing ferrari parts (oem or otherwise) or will you be modernising slightly underneath? (modern brakes etc)
Other than the shell, how much ferrari will you have at the end?
don't worry, I'm not a ferrari fan boy that's going to bash you if you use the wrong colour piping on the leather, just curious
It's gonna be 100% original, a proper nut and bolt job. Will you be sourcing ferrari parts (oem or otherwise) or will you be modernising slightly underneath? (modern brakes etc)

The only thing i'm gonna change is the colour, i'm changing it to black with creme leather, oh and i'm gonna flip it to right hand drive.

Awesome find mate, this should be an interesting thread
Cheers Playo, it's gonna be a long timely thread though haha. I was thinking about putting some of my previous cars on here but didn't want to look like a poser. My 997 C4 Cab
My Aston AMV8 Prodrive
My Maserati Granturismo (kind of, sent it straight back as the brakes were awful, had it less than a week)
My Ferrari 360 F1
My M Spec 6 series (manual)
My Bentley GT (1st one, i'm currently running a grey Mulliner) sorry about the pic quality.
My Porsche 986 Boxster
My Porsche 987 Miltec
My BMW E46 M3 (1st of 2, had a black one with Kiwi leather)
Some pics of my bikes, still have to find some pics of my XT 660 and my BMW 1200 GS Adventurer

Not if you fit a 330 motor and box
Hmm now this is interesting, it's a 250 engine that's bored out to a 4 ltr which i wasn't sure they did. To be honest i've been so busy recently that i've not been brushing up on my Ferrari homework. I need to pulling my finger out and jumping on it. It's my first project as i've always just bought cars, thrashed them and moved on to the next. I don't think i've ever changed oil before haha. You cant really bore them out, you'd have to swap the liners, pistons and crank . . .so most likely a 330 motor and 5 speed box, when a GTE should be 4 speed and overdrive
Having restored a few of these cars professionaly, feel free to drop me a line as with the greatest of respect, you've got the cheap big bit, getting all the other bits right is going to be the difficult and very expensive bit and there are a whole host of people out there who are going to want to make a large amount of money out of you, for example the two tone stainless trim on the door cards, costs a vast amount of money if you can get origninal PF bits . . . . or you can use the trim off the side of a 57 chevy for a few hundred, which is of course where PF got it from originaly!
Thank you so much Andrew for your help and if you don't mind then i'd like to take you up on it. I know how dear the parts are, and like i said i'm not too fused about the pennies, it's more about the enjoyment of seeing something come to life. No problem Pete, bang me a mail and I'll forward my number, I'm only on the Wirral and I'm in knutsford a few times a week, so happy to meet up and talk you through the pitfalls . . . first stop would be www.Tomyang.net . . . there are at least 2 people with spare interiors
Thanks Andrew, i really mean it as well. By the way, your website doesn't seem to be loading up or it could just be my computer. AndrewW-G said:
Yeah, I've been meaning to do something with it for some time, but as we've got a full order book until next year, there hasnt been much of a hurry with it
Touche. I've got a great web guy if you need any help with it. I'll email you tomorrow and drop you my details. I'll have to pop up and see your set up mate. Thanks again.Pete
Hi Guys
Thanks for all the good luck and nice comments.
I know a lot of people have said to me "why don't you buy a broken one and fix it up, it'll be cheaper"
I totally understand what everyone is saying on that matter but my main reply is "where's the fun?".
I know i could buy one from the states and totally revamp it up in no time at all. However i bought this project to keep me busy, i don't have any kids that need my attention. The wife has her projects that keep her busy so i wanted something to do with my idle hands.
Also i think i'm going to get a lot more satisfaction from the fact that i have absolutely no experience in fixing cars and i'm taking on a classic Ferrari.
Besides when it's finished i'll be looking at auctioning it off and the proceeds can go to Great Ormond Street Hospital for sick children. Then i'd like to move on to a DB5 and auction that off.
I'll be posting some more pictures of my previous cars soon, i'm just trying to get over the fact that this morning i've just got rid of my Bentley GT Mulliner for absolutely no apparent reason
It is going to be replaced by either a Britsh V8 or a Japanese 3.8 V6 this weekend so watch this space.
Cheers
