Day 1:

Well as most of you know Pugly my 205 1.9GTI (who was at the Merc Wolrd PH Meet last year) most would say she doenst need it but there are a few areas of rust that I want addressing properly (more photos of these further down)

She was off to the bodyshop on Friday....so I have had to get a wiggle on with it smile

Sadly I gave in taking the front bumper off (grey part) as the bolts are thoroughly rusted which would not be a problem normally but the bumper bolts are no longer available from Peugeot...an before anyone mentions a certain vendor on eBay i refuse to pay his exorbitant prices smile

One thing that has been a lovely surprise is even though she is 1988 car there is next to no rust on the front panels under the bumper.

The the next day was the completion strip of the interior, and the cleaning and prepping the areas like arches etc....oh and I will take a proper camera and not rely on my bloody iPhone4 smile

Day 2:
Photo updates....some similar to Day 1 but taken with a proper camera!

Now onto the bad bits.....well not that bad considering the car is 23 years old and french!

...and after some grinding and sanding then treating and topping off with some paint to hold off anything till proper coatings...

Day 3:

Couple of of my Peugeot mad mates came over to give me a hand getting the windscreen out of the old girl.....then they got carried away and got the bumper off....I went outside for a bit to help my other mate (one who owns the workshop) and came back to find the rad removed and the wiring for the lights all un-clipped and coiled up I swear if i had left it any longer the engine would have been out too!!!

My mate Kevin then asked if I had checked the seam where the floorpan and the bulkhead meet for rust as its a know weak point on the drivers side....looked ok then gave it a poke....ooops yep seems to have been a bit of fester point....so will be getting that sorted out buy my other mate Ben who is doing the body work and welding!

I also finished off the boot floor and gave it a nice coat of rubberized under-seal.

Day 4:

Well my mate Darren came over with his Dads low-loader and took me and Pugly to my mate Ben's body shop up the road (well 10 min drive)....she is all tucked up and ready for him to start ripping all the nasty bits out and weld her all up.

Ben inspected the rust patch/hole in the floor and is going to be able to cut it all out and plate it up so that's really great news as it was causing me some concern!

So here are the photos of her all loaded up on the flatbed....

Next update will be when I can pop in to see her when Ben starts work smile

Cheers fellas, she is my pride n joy....oh and I do drive her properly...you might have noticed the track outlines on the rear screen....yep she has done all of them and had the nut's driven off her...she keeps coming back for more too!

biggrin

She has had her moments of fame too being the car used by Performance Tuner magazine for an article solely on the 205 GTI...then she was called upon by Auto Express for their article a couple of years back on the top 20 hot hatches of all time!

She is just getting to the point where you could bodge the bad bits and go for a couple more years or bit the bullet and strip her and have everything done 100% properly and she will be good for the next 20 years...well I hope so anyhow smile

looks brilliant. I have recently had my white 1.9 semi restored.. alot of rust removed from the areas you have shown.

I will look forward to seeing the result of this.
Yeah the later Ph2 cars rot lots more as they moved the production to spain towards the end and they used really crap metal in the construction....hence why you will see alot of PH2 cars with serious rot behind the bumpers a on the inner wings frown

Love it! Will be watching this topic closely! I will scratch the 205 gti itch one day! Always wanted to restore one and drop a GTi-6 Lump into it!
Do it....but keep it standard they are worth more standard...although if you are building a track toy the GTI6 lump turns a 205 into a missile...just be sure to cage the bad boy up!!

Popped into see Ben and how he has been getting on with Pugly....here are the photos.

Good news the sills wont be needing replacing as first suspected (my motto is better have more parts and not use them, than to need them and not have them!), the worst areas are having the rot cut out and plated then ground flat and made like factory.

Rear 1/4s have a "healthy" skin of filler on them.....but then I kinda knew that already as she had had a rear end shunt at some point. But having only the one previous owner to me I know it was nothing too serious as I have a copy of the insurance claim in the history file smile

Anyhow photos that you have all been waiting for!!!!

Ok cool thanks Hoppo...bumpers are ok...mate of min found the bolts for the rubber bits at the side so hopefully going to be ok now, bought new bumper strips from Peugeot for about £15 each.

Been down to see her tonight and have a chat with Ben....had some filler done and some sanding....he has been busy helping his brother out with other jobs today as one of the guys was off sick.

Deffo starting to take shape though....not much welding has been done sadly because the guy who is off sick is the master craftsman welder!

Ho-hum....still everything is being done right which is what I want!

Any update? smile
Sadly not anything of much significance....the guy that was going to be doing the welding had been off ill then there was a backlog of work for him when he got back.

It should have been done this weekend (Saturday) so I will pop in and see tomorrow and get some pictures.

As I said to Ben, I am really in no rush and would rather the work be done properly and not rushed. smile

Well here we go people I know its been a while but been busy with work....turns out that Ben has been getting a shed load of work from one of the car dealers he does work for....he has been feeding him a car a day for this entire month!

Not overly fussed though as he is doing a great job so far!

I know there is filler but when its properly flatted back there will be next to none left.....the dents that have been done like this are weird shallow ones....hard to explain got a dent man to look at them but his price was just plain silly....so left it to Ben as he knows his stuff......

Here are the photos.....

Nasty rust hole on floor seam before and after....still needs grinding down and given a coat of something to seal it up.

Got a call off Ben this afternoon he has really been working hard on the 205 today!

So I left work at 3pm (I work in Uxbridge and Ben's workshop is in Aldershot!) and headed down to see what's been going on!

All the filler and skims are done and the big hole in the inner sill has been fixed (no photo of that) really looks stunning and I am getting uber excited, she will be in Primer tomorrow so hopefully more photos tomorrow night!

Well more progress today....not in primer but Ben decided to prep the whole car...get the bonnet and doors off flatted down all the pannels....ready for a trip into the paint booth tomorrow am for primer.

Plan for next week is paint the car on Tuesday then she comes home on Saturday!!!

Door hinges....passenger one is ok...

Drivers side is showing some serious wear and the hinges need replacing so thats also being done tomorrow as well...costing me a bit more but might as well do it as it will let the car down if not done.

looking good. mines going into the body shop on monday to get the auto bonnet painted and to cut out some rust on the sill infront of the rear arch. can't wait for it to be done as its the only thing that lets it down.
out of interest have they welded up the seam between the sill and quater panel inside the door? it looks like its been smoothed over, it will crack if its not been welded so just warning you.
ahh no its been ground back (removed the tab that causes the rust) properly to a edge when there is a tiny gap then welded and filler over the top to smooth it out...saw the weld just didnt take any photos of

She's going to look lovely isn't she! Mines just for go, not for show, although I still get plenty of compliments!

Cant' help thinking it's a mistake to smooth over that joint in the door shut... people are forever going to question what's hidden underneath.
Well she is never going to be sold and thats also why I have taken so many photos....will be creating a photo book to fully document every aspect of the restoration.

There is no way to have repaired that are as its a know weak point that will always keep rusting and rusting frown

Oh and she gets used done a few track days in her too. Cars are for using!!!

Apparently not I asked the same question. It's getting multiple coats so it's going to be flaw less. He has some mega expensive Chip Foose spray gun!! smile. I will make sure I have close up photos for you.

Bit of an update.....

Some paint has been done....and the rest of the car is being done tomorrow (Friday)!!!

What Ben had done so far is simply stunning....keep in mind this is a direct gloss 2k paint job with no clear coat....there is such minimal orange peel it is better than most high end paint finishes on Bentley's etc!

Bonnet, doors and bumpers have had 5 coats of paint....so this has probably helped masses but either way he is a serious master when it comes to spraying. The rest of the car will be getting the same level of paint....smile

He has been having a few issues though due to the waxes etc....now before I started stripping it the car had a very very strong G101 strip wash down with the pressure washer cranked up to 120 degrees C! Ben has prep wiped it....hit it with some evil tar and glue remover and done a washing up liquid wet sand and he has still had some major issues with imperfections appearing in the wet paint!!

Its not like he doesn't know what he is doing either (he has been doing this for a while now!!)....just goes to prove carnuba wax is a shed load stronger than you would ever imagine!

Anhooooooo the photos.....I think you will agree the gloss already on the bumpers and the bonnet is simply stunning...wait till I wet sand it down and jewel the paint to perfection!! smile
