Well after selling my RS4 cabriolet so quickly and doing so well with it I managed to step into one of my ultimate wants! I have had it a couple of weeks now only just got round to giving it a quick wash and polish. I am totally smitten with the car and I know I always say this but I am going to keep this car for 6 months at least I have even bought a private plate with my initials that is waiting to be transfered! The car exceeded my expectations. I had never even been in one before and this came up at a bargain literally within 24 hours of selling the RS4 so I snapped it up. The way this thing accelerates, handles and stops is incredible yet it is so civilised to drive around town in Auto! Love it!!!

The car is a 2009 GTR black edition in Kuro Black with 19,000 on the clock. 1 owner car owned by a retired chap prior to me. All I have done so far is spent a good few hours polishing the exhaust tips and a quick protection detail including de tar, iron X and clay. It had some stains in the paint from bird poo that had baked on but I soon made them dissapear.

Anyone considering one of these do it, I cannot think of what car I could have next that could better it without spending 5 times as much!

Plans:

Full correction detail
Private plate (hopefully be on this week)
Stage 1 Litchfield remap Y-Pipe and 2012 gearbox update (makes the 0-60 2.8 seconds!!!)
Couple of wheels have slight scuffs so need attention to be perfect
Doing the Asda Bruntingthorpe charity day in August so may get the front clear wrapped for protection

whats the insurance like on a GT-R for anyone under 30
Its hard to work out the quote I paid £800 odd (10 month bonus accelerator policy) on the RS4 had that two months and to change the policy to the GTR for the last 8 months was £686 I think with my favourite Admiral of course!

How old are you now OP, about 17? smile

Not meant to be rude by the way, I'm genuinely impressed and a tad jealous. That's a lovely looking car so please try to keep it a while so we actually get an update on how it drives and what it's like to live with in the mid-longterm!

Ps. what's the next car on your hit list, I bet you've got one?
22 now and just finished uni had my last exam yesterday been a busy few months working full time as well as finishing my degree but at least I can focus on my career now! I have not had any major consideration about next car yet as I am going to be buying a property soon so money I am earning will be for a house deposit... If things continue to go well with my business a red F430 spider by Christmas would be nice... dreaming but its the big targets that seem to drive me to work so hard!

In response to insurance questions, If you think about it its not that cheap in reality I am paying the equivalent of just under £2000 for a 10 month policy if you add the figures and time period together and I have a high excess. If I was to insure it on a 12 month policy with a sensible excess say £250 I would imagine it would work out closer to £2500-3000 for the year. I only have 1 years no claims because I always end up cancelling policies before the end of their term because of changing cars so frequently, The reason for not having it in the garage is one because it wouldnt fit and the S2000 I bought my dad lives in their and two because it is actually hundreds of pounds more expensive on the insurance if its in the garage, a tip I give to many regarding admiral. Park your car on the street rather than driveway/garage and watch your premium fall. I give a lot of advice to younger drivers on insurance as there are various ways of saving.

I must fully update my garage, the MX5 was great for the money it was actually my dads car I bought it him as a gift last year and then sold that and bought him an absolute steal of an S2000 both cars can be as fun as the GTR in the right situation. The S2000 especially, if I am honest the GTR is too fast its the fist car I have had when really pushing on where not only has the passenger been saying "Oh my God!" but so have I. The car is so capable and unlike most cars which will restrict you big time when pushing on with the traction control on. The GTR will literally let you drive on the limit and make you look like a driving god.

I am keen to get a property now with a secure double garage or more offroad somewhere as my parents are always concerned about the cars I have because of the attraction to thieves, I posted a thread on here earlier in the year when we were broken into for thieves trying to get the keys to my RS6 avant and M5. Like I said now I have finished my degree I am so excited I can now fully concentrate on upping the game one step further, many who know me will back up how driven I am and hopefully this next year should see me progress rapidly because of having full time commitment to buying and selling cars. I have totally stopped the fishing tackle business I had now but that gave me a massive push through uni and was responsible for getting me started. I like that people feel inspired from what I have done as it would be good to see people do the same. The rewards are out there for anyone, the hardest bit is the first couple of years getting to £15k plus. The level I am at now means the margins are much greater so each step gets bigger.... but it does have its risks.

It certainly does, one wrong buy or something that blows up on you at that kind of money can be a bit of a disaster and a major set back. Dont put all eggs in one basket so to speak.

Also if your now playing with that kind of money I hope you have a business set up properly as the banks/tax man wont turn a blind eye forever.
I know do have to be careful but the big rewards mainly require big risks in any business, yes set up a trading as business mid February as I am self employed and source vehicles for a prestige motor company so invoicing them too. Although my accountant is now saying he thinks I need to change it to a limited company got a meeting about that next week.

regarding the rules I am not sure with personal cars I mean if you are registering in your own name and using the cars and purely just change as often as I do. I have heard various opinions a few people including accountants have said you can buy and sell up to 7 private cars a year???

Thanks for the kind words, and I hope you achieve your goal!

I am surprised as that as I normally get flooded with PM's from people, mainly 18-25 year olds saying I have saved them a couple of hundred quid... It has saved me alot over the last few years finding that out. I have not tried it with other companies but it is definately cheaper to park your car on the street rather than garage/driveway with Admiral for younger drivers

Amazing car!
A small question to the op or anyone in the now!
How do you decide the price to sell a car on at?
Do you simply choose a price a small percentage higher than what you bought it for or do you be cheeky and push for more than it is worth on a really good day?
From what i have seen, the op does not carry out any major work to the cars, just detailing them and getting them perfect.
So there are very few things that could increase the value of the car, yet they are consistently sold for a handsome profit.
I suppose what i am trying to ask is, what determines the new value of the car once in the ops hands?
Many thanks
As a few others have said its just about pricing it with the market, looking at similar vehicles on AT, Pistonheads, ebay etc.... As a case of adding value there are many ways. But since starting working in the motortrade a couple of months ago. The biggest way of adding value to these types of car is to have it in a nice showroom. There are many factors though, as in presenting the car in perfect condition to give that wow factor. I have sold 95% of my cars to the first that have viewed. It is all about making the car look stunning in the flesh as well as the photos. I like to think as soon as the person pulls up and sees the car they are sold on it.

I am undecided on taking a gamble (profit wise) in the next week whether to have the car upgraded to the 2012 software and stage 1 remap. The cost of this is in the region of £1000 now I have picked up a Milltek Y pipe cheap! I think this could actually add extra value to the car. Basically it will mean I can sell it as a 2009 car that has performance in excess of a 2012 GTR with the added benefit of Lichfield warranty! Or do I leave it as is a one owner totally original car.... Its a toughy! When investing money into cars you need to be seeing a minimum 20% return really to have any major benefit over leaving it in the bank.

Private plate is now on and I am really happy with it. Been looking for a plate for ages but seeing as everything I ever buy I see as an investment I hadnt seen any cheap. Picked it up for £100 off a chap on ebay that had bought a motorbike with it on. (had no meaning to him) then it cost me £80 to have it transfered. I think with the pace I change cars I am going to be giving the DVLA a lot of my hard earned in transfer fees!

Also picked up a new Milltek Y pipe non resonated for a bargain price and treated myself to a snowfoam lance and Magifoam for the fun of it quick pic below with the car half snowfoamed, really makes cleaning it even more fun!

Very nice. Do you offer a warranty on the cars being sold through the showroom? Another way to add value on cars at that price?
My own personal cars, when selling through the showroom I have to add my own warranty on it. Its not fair on the guy I work with to expect his company to be liable. The agreement I have is that I have to warrant my own cars with the M5 I put that under the monthly BMW insured warranty and made the new owner carry this on. Same goes for the RS4 I bought this with some Approved used audi warranty left and again made the new owner transfer this to himself. I have only sold two of my personal cars through the showroom so far and really cannot believe the value it adds.

I bought my M5 from the business owner I work with now and thats how I met him and got asked if I wanted to join the business. I ended up selling the M5 I bought at full retail price off him for quite a bit more than I paid. This was because I realised that M5's under bmw warranty command a bigger premium so I stuck the monthly warranty on and it and it increased its value.

Now the GTR is out of warranty this is why I am tempted to go to litchfields because its means I can sell and modified GTR and offer transferable warranty when I can bear to part with it. I really cannot see me selling it anytime soon as now I am learning the car I cannot get over its capabilities!!!

Difficult one spending £1k on upgrades - the gearbox software is awesome completely transforms the car in auto mode it even creeps just like a proper auto then is millisecond quick as a manual change, as you feel its too quick as it is the extra 100bhp will be excessive - it is frankly mad on the road and I've driven and raced many different cars - if is way quicker than a Sagaris. but then you can turn it down to road power flick of the cruse control switch to be a cruiser

For resale probably not much in it as anyone serious about a GTR knows you can upgrade them at lichfields for £1k - you need to have a day out in Tewkesbury to get it done though so if you are based miles away - may be a clincher

Good luck
Thanks for the feedback regarding the gearbox update I have heard very good reports.. I don't find the box in mine too jerky around town but with it having a new box less than 1000 miles ago in March maybe its the updated box already.. although it doesnt creep as you say. I don't think it needs the extra 100hp but now I have picked up the y pipe just the remap will be around £500 and an extra 100hp for that money its seems criminal not to do it??

What a horrible day and am sure there will be more of these posts today but Hinckley and a few other areas of leicestershire were struck with a freak hail storm this afternoon, Hail the size of tennis balls. The GTR is covered in hundreds of dents my other cars have smashed windscreens and hundreds of dents also. Parents conservatory roof caved through. I have had a chat with a few bodyshops and most are saying cars will be written off a neighbour took his 61 plate seat leon to the bodyshop and they have written it off. The car was parked at home whilst I was at work (the showroom) dealing with a glass roof being smashed to pieces. Cars at work are all covered in glass.

From speaking to others there has never been a storm like this in the UK. Pictures to follow and updates on what the insurance do as I havent made a claim before got to take it to get an estimate but nissan have said if it needs all the panels replacing it would write it off frown

Forgot about updating having a bit of a nightmare now.... Its been written off to started the cherished transfer to get my plate off as the salvage company have been instructed to collect it soon. The paying out it the big problem. As its a £20,000 + car you have to prove what you paid for it and show the transaction for how much you paid... Now before I was told this Admiral were saying they would payout up to £38500 which is still not enough as I had it sold for £41750. but now they are saying that can't pay me more than I paid for it. which is substantially lower.

Not sure where my rights are here but I was under the impression insurers had to be able to give you enough to replace the car like for like in "current" market condition. The car has appreciated slightly since I bought it and is worth £42k with the mileage and being black. I am seeking advice and won't be allowing the insurance to have the car picked up until I have the money I want for the car. The amount I have spent on insurance with them why can they not be fair now???

My feelings are to say to the insurers right, dont payout you go and find me a black GTR with less than 20,000 miles and replace it for me!

Really getting me down now as its quite a set back an could really cost me financially. My plan prior to the hailstorm was to be buying an R8 V10 can see it being a fair few months untill that happens now!

On a good note I got my uni results last week and got first class honours!!!

I studied business management and entrepreneurship. I didnt sell any business not sure where that came from, I ran an online fishing tackle business whilst at university which although is fairly small scale I still dabble in it (much to my parents annoyance at a garage full of fishing equipment!). Anywhere I can make money I will, property is where I want to go next but I still feel my capital is better off in the short term in car.

I do not have a traders policy just a personal policy as the cars I post about on here are my personal cars. The cars I buy and sell in between for a living are on a seperate policy.

Yes the jump from the GTR to an R8 V10 at what I will be buying one for is about £20k. Since finishing uni I have literally worked my arse off as I have been waiting 4 years to get uni out the way and be able to earn full time, I am EXTREMELY driven by money! Its these full time earnings that give me that injection which boosts me up the ladder quicker. It started out as just an on the side thing BUT I really enjoy it and am now basing my career on it as it doesnt even feel like I am working when buying and selling cars, I don't use any finance etc as I wouldnt want to live beyond my means as with this amount of money theres a lot of risk. I feel I am going to lose out big with this whole insurance thing but I am going to have to recover from it. The level of margins is awesome once you get to £60k plus. Some of the cars I see and want to buy around this level such as gallardos, F430's have £10-15k margins between buying them and selling them but cars like this to maximise price need to be sold from a nice looking showroom. Which at a charge to me I have the facilities.

My cars go through a "trading as" business, although my accountant has said from what am I am earning I would be better changing to a limited company which I am going to be meeting about soon. VAT is something which has to be paid on the profits of cars that I am buying and selling but you are allowed up to 7 personal cars a year that means they have to be registered in your name ie on the logbook

Right, so your a normal sole trader (like myself) and get a 7 car 'break' as it were before money made counts as profit? - I suppose with certain cars an extra owner is detrimental to value and a traders policy will make sense....

Keep pressing your insurers, they are usually open to negotiation & good luck with everything - tax etc is a pita!
Yes now uni is over I can look at getting a traders policy as when buying 1 owner cars its nice to keep them that way but I buy the cars for enjoyment as well so like to keep them for a while. The insurance is really dragging heals saying more checks need to be done etc as its a high value vehicle. My life savings are in this car its one hell of a stress... horrible frown
