Thought i should make a thread.

Having just got my years no claims and being 18 i thought it time to upgrade from a 1.8 tddi 03 focus.

Many nights spent browsing ads and checking insurance.

Eventually a datsun cherry turbo poppped up. Insurance wasnt too bad at £1800 with RAC cover and fully comp.

Only problem was it was 660 miles away in london. MOT was out on the monday so if i wanted it i had to fly down by saterday.

Got on the plane at 5:45 am from inverness.

To cut the story shorter, i bought it for £1300.

Drove it home in 2 trips, stopped for the night in blackpool at relitives house.

Got almost all the way home without problem, untill scotland. When we were getting close to glasgow there was heavy snow so had to crawl along.
Then the turbo hose came loose on the A9 which stopped it boosting over 3psi.

However it got home.

The paint on the car is horrible, old owner painted it outside or something.

For MOT it needs:
Front Discs
Front Pads
Rear brake cylinder, both sides
Might need new tyres
New headlight bulb

Pictures of when it got home to come in next post soon.

Old owner had already made holes in the door for speakers, rear parcelshelf and there was 2 holes already in bumper for spotlights so just made 2 more.

Front had been cut open for a intercooler as well.

Edit: Also boost gauge installed too with more holes.

Noooooo!

My Grandad had a Y plate Datsun Cherry (SSC 202Y) which was bought brand new in nineteen oatcake and which was passed on to my Mum who in turn then bought a B plate Nissan Cherry GL (B170 HAM) which in turn was passed to me as my first car and I loved it!

I so wanted this to be a standard car getting some sympathetic resto action but aaaargh, excessive bolt on and plug in warning rerquired. Stop sticking crap on it and in it, get the paint sorted and you'll have an awesome retro car which, as you've said is the last one standing. That or punt it to some old school Jap enthusiast and buy something off the shelf to fill will speakers.
As i just said, previous owner made holes, had to buy speakers to fill the holes.

Same for spot lights, and the old steering wheel is pretty fooked.

They're just a bit... obvious? You could cut out blanks from thin wood, piece them in and retrim it in standard spec cloth or cover the shelf in accoustic carpet and mount the speakers under the shelf instead (might need to brace it with some MDF) which would do away witht he silver covers. Likewise, spot lights holes can be filled and then paint the bumpers with the U-Pol texture paint. Does a grand job of replicating the standard finish.
I was hoping to run it for a year, then slowly restore it to origional.

Was a fast car with decent insurance.

Well today was doing a last checkover before MOT tomorrow.

It had been unsealed by a old owner, so just put some more where it had come off due to being jacked up.

The old bad spot is in the last picture, anyone know if it would be a MOT fail.

Under the car so bad pictures =/

It was free to build and works better for us. We have http://experience4x4.com/

So lots of muddy cars, we dont want all the mud inside the shed so we have them outside.

I owned a black Cherry turbo the same as yours back in the early 90's. It used to belong the MD of Liftright who owned a fork lift repair business based in Southall.

Strangely enough she sold it (to me) for £600, taking £100 out of my wages for six months and replacing it this weeks SOTW, a new Isuzu Longhorn!. I was very surprised how fast it felt in a straight line and it was totally standard, me being the second owner from new with 50,000 miles on it. It 'featured' standard brakes and suspension and they were vastly unfit for purpose. The car did not handle at all well and suffered massive brake fade if used as it was intended.

If that was mine I would undo all the rubbish and try my utmost to get it back to standard. It will instantly double in value. Adding all that tat will just cost you more in insurance (you have declared that the car is not standard haven't you?) and further devalue would could be a really special car.

As said previously, it's your car and you can do what you like with it but it would be worth so much more as an original car. Either way I hope you enjoy it as much as I did it certainly made me laugh a lot thumbup
Everything is declared, and im hoping to get it back to standard. The inside is fked pretty much, needs need front bumper also. Problem is its hard to find.

Also passed the MOT with the only advisory being that it needs new tyres which i knew anyway.

Also this arrived today

So a update to this.

fked the engine right at the end of the summer last year.

Basically it wont boost.

When not in gear will rev and turbo will spool and build boost. In gear cannot get it to boost. As soon as the boost guage gets to 0 it stutters and slows down.

It also pumps lots of white smoke out on deacceleration. Changed the head gasket already.

So left it sat up as I left the country for 3 months then moved out from home on return.
So now about 6 months later I got to have a quick look at it. Started first time, litterly instantly, didnt even put a new/charge the battery.

Any ideas what is up with it from my st explanation?

Is it ignition timing? Vacuum advance not working - car will rev with no load, but won't when there's some load on the engine...

Might be worth a look...
How would I go about checking this?

Also didnt think it would be a dead turbo if it spools when not under load.

Forgot to say that the turbo was fooked.

Had cracked beside the wastegate so boost was escaping. Cost £400 to get rebuilt :/
