My 75' BMW 1602 project
Discussion
Hi all
For the past few years I've been pining for an old car I can work on and improve on over time. I'm sure we all do it, scanning eBay for them cars we've always fancied. For me, born in 1981 I loved cars since I was crawling, and remember certain cars very fondly. Down my street in East Ham in London, within doors of each other were a Peugeot 205gti, a Renault 5 gt turbo and an E10 BMW 2002. I promised myself I'd own the Renault, and when I passed my test in 98, I bought two. I will own another one again but the one I always wanted was the BMW.
Fast forward to now and I've been browsing the forums and eBay for a couple years now. Then one popped up for not a lot of money. Ok, she ain't a 2002 and she isn't a round light, nor tax exempt, but these are the reasons why it was cheap. That and the fact it needs PLENTY of work!
I picked it up from a bloke in Milton Keynes who had loads of em in the past. He was nice and honest with the description and had done some of the tricky welding already, albeit about 15 years ago. The car has just sat there, so the parts he has done are still solid. The parts he hasn't however...
So here she is when we picked her up. Only have a few photos but I'll update tomorrow as I'll be spending a good few hours with her and stick more pics up for you lot
All the parts are there (well, in the boot), and a couple of panels cut off another car he owned, and he still has bits and pieces spare that I could pinch off him if I need them.
The car is running the bigger 2002tii engine, but strangely isn't running the injection system and is running the single carb setup.
Plans for the car are to make her a solid, reliable and useable classic, but a bit more up to speed style wise. Nothing that couldn't be put back to standard if needed. I'm talking nicer, wider wheels and rubber, lowered a couple inches etc.
She doesn't need to be fast (I have a Skyline GTR for that), and she doesn't need to do the mundane family stuff (BMW 535d for that). She just needs to be beautiful!!!
I'll update this thread as I go, as I'm sure I'll be picking your brains all the way through this build, as it's the very first time I'll ever attempt to do anything like this.
It sure won't be the last though!
Comments, criticisms and suggestions welcomed
Hope you like

P.S, I'll probably do a thread on my Nissan when I get a bit more time, if anyone wants to see that too!

Thanks Stuart. I went to have a better poke around at the crusty bits and pooped my pants a bit! You guys might look and think I'm being a bit of a pansy about it, but it's quite a daunting task for someone who hasn't done anything like this before.
Let me know what you think
Not bad eh?
Front panel
Old repair
O/S rear floor
Drivers floor
And again
Passenger floor
Boot floor
I suppose I need to get her stripped and take everything back and see what is left behind. Anyone want to buy a used BMW 1602???

I think I'll leave it as it is in terms of front and rear panels. I got a place round the corner from me who chrome plastics. Maybe they can do my front grilles for me as a bit of a short cut.
My first plan was to get the car running and driving, make what needs to be solid for an mot, put some sexy wheels and drop it some, clear laquer it (a bit fast and loud patina-esque!) and use it for a couple months and shows. Kind of get the car out there and get it known before I transform it into something amazing for the year after.
I just need to get stuck in right now!

Hi all
Just so anyone who's interested, I've finally managed to get the car in our lock up. The problem I'll have is the amount of stuff that shares the space in the unit. It's fairly small to start with, so there's plenty to pull out so I can move the car and work on it.
Still have to buy a few bits and pieces to really get stuck in, and still getting confused with coatings and rust protection at the moment. I've recruited a couple mates to give me a hand whenever they can. They're keen to get stuck into it as much as me!
Just a couple of pictures at the moment to show where the car resides etc. I'll update as I go and take as many pictures as I can
My pal trying it on for size
It's home for the next year or so
Partial strip down
Not much to see, but i'll document everything I do and update this thread. Got a couple of good pals giving me a hand if they can (ones a welder, and one reckons he's good at cutting bits off of cars!) so with their help, progress will be better, considering the time I can spend on it.
Cheers

Happy Good Friday everyone
I popped down the car today. Didn't get much done as I was on my own for the most part, but I got some pictures nonetheless.
And you'll have to excuse the welding. It's my first time!
I nominate the peacock for the nosiest bird award!! I reckon one of em must have arc eye, he was standing so close!!
Cut the rear panel off to access the boot floor. Panel was rotten anyway
Cut a little section out to replace
I'll sort this side out on Sunday
Welded in a new piece.
This little fker was practically on my lap whilst welding!
Now there's some nooks and crannies I need to get to. I'm struggling to get into panel joins to clean with a knot wheel on a grinder. Any opinions on what to buy to get in the corners etc?
I'm talking areas like these
And tucked away again (pain in the arse getting it in and out!)
I know it's not much, but thanks for looking anyway.

Cheers lads. I just need to get as much time down there as I can. I suppose the more I do, the easier it'll get, but right now it all seems hard!
Mark, I'll try and pop down pristine on there open day thing they're doing. You gonna be there?
I can't remember the date for it. When is it again?

Evening all
I thought I'd best get this thread started. I haven't had the time to work on the car since the last post on here, due to work and home life. But now I'm renting a property with a garage whilst work is done on my flat, I can crack on with this
Today I've been cleaning up the near side sill. It was put on new in 98, but started to show a bit of corrosion. I thought I best do this before it got any worse
You can see the pitting, but I'm sure I've cleaned it up enough. Gave it some time with some acid gel stuff, which is supposed to neutralise anything in the pitting. Worked it in over and over with a small wire brush. I then gave it a coat with some etching primer.
Does anyone know, when it finally comes to prepping for paint, can the etching primer be filled over the top, or does the filler have to go on bare metal?
I'll probably have an update with this most days I work on it.
Thanks for any interest. Any hints or tips, please don't hold back. I'm winging it as it is!!
Cheers

Thanks for the replies.
I've got plenty of time today so I'll pop down Pristine a bit later. He must be the most knowledgable bloke round close to me!
I'll have to look on YouTube. I do have a little gander on there sometimes. I'll check that channel out now.
Plenty to do on it. There's an area of rot on the roof which made me st my pants! It seems (and I'm praying!) it's only this area though, where you'd mount a roof rack. Bloody hope so too!

Not in the state this one is in!! Hopefully one day though Mermaid.
Although fairly quiet, compared to more known forums, www.02forum.co.uk is a knowledgable site.
Popped down to Pristine to see what they've got going on. Some nice cars down there (including yours Mark!). Very knowledgable, and work looks second to none. I'm sure he'll be doing bits on mine at some point.
I've decided to go Turbo arches on this car, as there's a rust hole in one of the rear arches.
Updates as and when I do a bit
Cheers

Turbo arches look much better than standard ones on these.Just a little update. I've been blasting the front panel today. Didn't get it all done but got a few pictures nonetheless.
High pressure water and kiln dried sand. I didn't like the idea of blasting water at it, but it worked fairly well
I'll have to revisit it when the weather perks up, but it does get good results. It just needs drying and coating ASAP, and it might need something working into the pitted steel. Just worries me that a spec of rust in a pit might rear it's ugly head in the future. And we do not want that, especially on a visible, finished panel!
Cheers
Been some seriously slow progress on this, but I do as much as I can, when I can.
Been fiddling about with the rear panel and getting it welded in place. Tricky job, as it was a second hand panel and it had been cut off a donor car by Ray Charles!! Had a little help from Figgle (poster above. Good to meet you mate) and finally associated the boot floor to the rear panel.
Quick snap of it on
Now I need to coat up the boot area and the underside of the boot.
I have these products (along with red oxide primer, not in the photo)
The silver can is an etch primer. The tin on the the right is a two part coating we use on gas mains to prevent rusting and oxidisation. Not entirely sure it stays flexible at all though.
Any suggestions as to the best gear for the boot area, and also for the underside?
Cheers guys

Still going with this Dean?
Still plugging away at it mate, but not the same car. I put this one on the back burner when I found another which looked like it just wanted paint. How wrong I was!!I'll stick some photos up of it when I get up the unit tomorrow evening of its current state, but in short, it's a flared arch, low, M44'd car now.
I'll post pics as soon as I get a couple decent ones, but in the meantime, here's a quick photo (although it's in primer, and the engine bay has been painted)
