I've been buying a new car today, Van Diemen single seater race car

Here are the photos taken by the seller.

It also comes with an extra set of bodywork to turn it into a Sports Racer, I don't have photos of that bodywork yet but here's someone elses car

Spec is as follows:

Van Dieman spaceframe - Ch RF01-2880
Honda Blackbird 1137cc injected engine c.170bhp
VD dry sump system
Electric reverse gear - currently removed to save weight
DTA management ECU
Tony Law exhaust
Techcraft repackable silencer
F3 4 pot AP brakes with floating discs
OZ 8 & 10" centrelock wheels
Pi Research C-Dash

What class does that race in ?

My dad had a string of formula ford rf80's. smile
I plan on racing it in Sport Libre with the Sports Racer bodywork fitted rather than the single seater bodywork. It'll be more competitive in that class rather than against 350kg 200bhp+ entrants!

Blimey, that looks a bit serious!
Yeah, but of a contrast to the 1.6D Volvo! hehe

More relevant to the activities involving the car but I've ordered low chassis stands and a quick lift jack (ultra low and more akin to the F1 pit jacks than a normal car jack). Also bought a second hand Race Technology DL1 (mk2) which is pretty much essential for Sprinting.

Also bought a V2 Elite helmet, I've always heard good things about them. I'm aware of the arguments about more expensive helmets but I'm not circuit racing (much less chance of an accident) and the Elite has much better padding inside.

OP is the 'bird lump dry sumped? If not it really should be. 'birds don't like lateral g even with a baffled sump.

I'd also look at a geartronics system if you have some spare cash - they can find a false neutral with worn dogs which is a 'box rebuild if you're accelerating hard at the time - I speak from expensive personal experience on that one.

Never realised you could run them as a sports proto - looks great.
"VD dry sump system"

biggrin

Look what the nice man delivered today

Might need a bigger garage though...

The additional bodywork took up a little more room than I'd anticipated!

Want! So much want!!

How easy is it to add the additional bodywork? You could store it all attached to the car?
I've yet to find out! Supposedly "1 hour" but the first time will be more like 4 I'd imagine!

It's under consideration, the lack of run of is a little scary at this point. Maybe when I have more experience.

You just need to put some Ferrari decals on it now!
I really am in two minds about that. It might be overly tacky? What's the general consensus?

It has a seat in there but I will certainly be making a bag seat.

I will be after some tyres but I need to check what size I need.

To be honest, I was looking at a grey ('Scuderia') stripe down the centre and some simple vinyl stickers down the side, just to break up the solid colour.

Ferrari stickers do seem a little obvious and cheap really

I finally got round to starting it up today, not a particularly exciting video but I was quite pleased that it started and made a nice noise (not reflected in the video clip unfortunately!)

Thought about hill climbing?
Maybe, just a little concerned about the lack of run offs plus my current lack of experience.

Maybe in the future though. Sprinting and hillclimbs are pretty much the same thing anyways smile

Alas, the Elise has gone and ultimately replaced by the VD. I'm sure I'll do a hill climb but first things first is to do some sprinting smile

Fantastic! What does it weigh? (Probably above somewhere but couldn't spot it)
I'm told 450kg so has a similar power to weight to a 12c (if my maths is about right)... but can go round corners quicker! biggrin

Spent some time getting ready for the maiden voyage on Thursday. It's forecast rain unfortunately which isn't my preferred weather status for my first drive!

Well, we'll start with a lovely shot of my knees shod in Levi's finest. These aren't what I'll be wearing whilst racing of course wink

Spent some time replacing the harnesses. The old ones were fine (out of date) but the seller included a brand new harness so I thought I might as well!

Also replaced the nasty blue padding, which was worn out, with some black stuff. It looks great!

Finally, slapped the wets on ready. I wanted to make sure my jack worked alright.
