Picked up a 1968 105e project a couple of months back. the previous owner had done most of the hard work (many thanks to him) and now it is my project to complete (finger crossed).

What is it? - 1968 Ford Anglia 105e Super Saloon, reprayed in original Ermine White/Anchor Blue colour scheme
Mods - Rear welded half cage, five link/gaz coilover rear (4.4 open diff), Escort mk2 world cup front end with Gaz coilovers, quick rack, adjustable top mounts and TCAs, front bulkhead moved, large gearbox tunnel.

The plan - Ford Puma 1.7 Zetec SE engine with bike throttle bodies and tubular exhaust, emerald ecu probably, (hoping for around the 150hp mark), Type 9 gearbox, Caprisport GTR260 front brakes and rear discs (XR4x4 calipers), keep interior stripped, corbeau clubman seats and 4 point harness, battery and fuel tank in boot, trim and wheels TBD.

The project is progressing - build blog can be found here - www.anglia1968.weebly.com

Just a final bit of info - weighted the engine at the weekend -

1.7 Puma Engine stripped of anilliaries + cast exhaust manifold (no down pipe) + aux belt idler and cast bracket + flywheel + 1/2 full of oil - 88kg
As above + alternator + starter + throttle bodies - 98kg

Hoping the Engine + Bellhousing/clutch + gearbox will be under 150 kg.

Quick couple of pics in current state -

Blog has been updated - www.anglia1968.weebly.com

Had another go at fitting the engine now I have a low profile water manifold on the back of the head and also no sump (will be getting a new/low level one made to fit over the cross member/steering rack) -

Plenty of space !

Cleaned up under the front wings, all sound with just a bit of surface rust and a fair bit of original paint left on, now prepped and ready for painting -

Anyone got any view on these wheels, can you spot what they came off? -
Silver

Spot on 205 gti pepperpots.

I need 14" wheels to fit over the xr4x4 caprisport brake so that rules out lotus steels, 4 spoke rs so I will use these as a stop gap but want something different to the usual minilites. I think they will look better in the darker colour so may rattle can them to see how they look before getting them refurbed. Occasionally 5spoke compomotives come up but these are very rare.

I'll keep you posted on progress.

That looks like its going to be fun. Any idea on the power-to-weight ratio when finished?
Engine is (will be) a Puma 1.7 Zetec SE with Triumph RS Sprint 42mm throttlebodies, Emerald ECU, probably a focus exhsut manifols and 1 7/8" system, everything else standard internally so should push out about 150hp. CAr off the production line was 740kg so should be close to that - so around the 200 BHP/Ton mark.

Love 105e's

Maybe try lower profile tyres on those wheels?

But keep them silver, or get some steelies

Cantw wait to see it finished!
Cheers, have looked at steelies - the Pug 106 Rallye ones look nice if you can find a straight set the S1 were 5.5x14 and the s2 6x14 ET24 (same as these) may keep searching but will use these for now. Definitely will need lower profile tyres (175/55 or 165/60's) as these do not clear the front lower lip of the arch (standard arches) otherwise I wil have to get the arches modified.

Nice looking anglia, and I see my engine as the successor to the Twink but without the hassle/cost (1700cc, 16v, 150hp) and a bit lighter (Zetec SE engine is less than 100kg dressed with fluids, 140kg with Type 9 gerbox, ally bell housing and clutch etc.).

Steelies are great if I can get them in a 14" as 13"'s do not fit over the brake set up I am putting on (Caprisport GTR260, XR4x4 calipers with 260mm RS Turbo discs) which is why I may eventiually look at the 106 Rallye ones, the sutouts are a bit different as well to the normal round ones. 5 spoke 14" Revolites occasionally come up so will keep an eye out for them. These will do for now to roll it out of the garage on and get it up and running (hopefully by next summer).

Thanks for the interest everyone.

Thanks for the info on wheels, did not know the Alfa 105 had the same pcd as the old fords (4x108). Nice car the 105 especially with the early v6 engine.

I was looking at these as a backup/when I have the cash but they wil need painting which adds to the cost- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-106-1-6-RALLYE-G...

Quick update:

Biggest job completed recently was to finish painting the underside of the car - I can now declare - I HAVE A SHINY BOTTOM !

Got the TBs provisionally bolted onto the engine with the adaptor plate I had laser cut, still need a bit of work like a bigger counter sink on the bolt heads but pretty close. Should sound nice at over 7000 rpm !

Over the weekend I managed to get the gearbox, bell housing and engine bolted together, the cross member in place and a temporary gearbox mount made (bit of wood actually). So, in went the drive train to see where it would best sit and for me to take a load of measurements for the sump and engine mounts.

Here's a few pictures of it in place, about right fore/aft/left/right but about 15mm too low. I also added the TB's to check for clearance (no problems there) and also for the brake master cylinder (looks like there is room for the exhaust, bonus).

(Sorry about the photo quality but the lens on my camera broke and I had to take these on manual and at fully open aperture)

L100NYY - thanks for the comment - ST170 would have been my second choice with Bike Carb kit from Chester Sports Card but wanted something more like the old Twink engine (revvy and light with around 130-140hp) and the Puma Zetec SE seemed to fit the bill (hoping for 150hp) and should suit the car well I hope.

Another update -

After the marathon cleaning and painting session I have finally started putting stuff back on, rather than taking it off.

Front suspension - I found I have Alachi top mounts that are not adjustable but with my TCA's wound right in there is still too much camber (about 4 degs) so have order a set of adjustable eccentric ones

Rear Axle - took the decision to refit the 4.125:1 diff and see how it goes, logically it is too short for the Type 9 but I have 7200 rpm to play with so it should be lively off the mark. Also butchered the Caprisport caliper mounts to make them fit behind the flange.

Pedal Box (Escort Mk2 with modified Bulkhead) - rebuilt this after cleaning and painting and it fits very well with the MX6 modified master cylinder.

Sump - Finally, got the first pictures through from Crapengineering (http://crapengineering.weebly.com/) of my sump. Looking nice !

I also had a chat to someone who can weld up some engine mounts and modify the cross member and I am looking into a Spencer Ashley mild steel exhaust manifold kit at the moment. Looking at the engine bay I may have to go with a shorty 4-1 style manifold but will get the engine in and see how it goes.

So hopefully by Christmas all of the running gear will be sorted and the engine/gearbox will be in.

Will keep you posted. (blog updated with more pictures)

*****RED LETTER DAY*****

The Anglia has new boots and is back on the ground after 6 months on axle stands !!!

Underside cleaned and painted, front and rear suspension overhauled and painted, XR4x4 brakes on, Engine/gearbox in on bespoke mounts and new set of boots (185/50/14 A539's) and wheels (6x14 Et26 on front and ET18 on rear).

Had a few issues to solve but finally got the wheels in the right place (courtesy of the Escort Mk2 running gear, milton set up would have been easier) and I had to design and get made the engine/gearbox mounts, Zetec SE is not a common transplant. Next challenge is the exhaust (got an escort pinto 4-2-1 2.25" manifold and driver side system, similar to sportex, on the way which will be butchered, sorry modified).

Plenty of jobs still to do but the list is getting shorter.

Thanks for the comments guys, much appreciated.

My first car was a mk1 escort (mid '80s), then built a fisher fury kit car, wanted another project, thought about another kit (mev replicar was top of the list) when this came up and was too good to pass by. It is definitely a weekend hobby but trying to keep myself progressing so it does not stagnate.

As you habe so rightly observed, I wanted something that would handle well on the road (and occasional track day), stop sharply if needed (the oem xr4x4 setup is a good compromise I think) and have a modern version of the twink to make it quick but not stupid, 150hp and close to 700kg should be entertaining enough.

Ponk, no, not from a guy called Dan, sorry.

Not updated for a while.

Visually not a huge amount seems to have happened but I have -

Fitted all of the copper (cunifer covered in clear heat shrink) brake lines, designed and ordered fuel tank and combi tank for rad header/oil catch/asher water, spec'd and ordered the wiring loom, removed and painted the rocker cover, fitted the radiator and fan, re-aligned and fitted the throttle bodies, and the biggest job, designed and had laser cut the exhaust manifold flange and chopped about the exhaust manifold and got it ready for welding up (escort pinto 4-2-1 2.25" drivers side system).

I have added details of the throttle body fit on the Zetec page - http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=87956...

A couple of pics of current progress, still lots to do but progressing, full diary (insomniacs cure !) and lots of pics on my blog (anglia1968.weebly.com) -

Cheers guys for the comments. The pinto swap into the Anglua is not as straight forward as you think, quite a long engine, as I found the pinto manifold was nearly 2" wider from port 1-4 than the zetec se. Zetec e (silver ir black top) will fit, just, without bulkhead mods with the right fitting kit, carbs are a bit close though if you use dcoe's.

Will keep you posted.

Pretty well completed the dash area and mounting for the ECU and other techie bits (mini heater, ETB Digidash and the glovebox will have a stock lid on it)-

Fitted the front combi tank and and plumbed in the fuel system

Now getting ready for the wiring and then hopefully a start up before Christmas :-)

BIG MILESTONE REACHED TODAY !!!!

THE ENGINE STARTS !!!!!

So after a few weeks plagued by electricker problems I have made a big step today. First go it sounded like it was trying to start, swapped the cranks sensor wires around and off she went.

Here's the proof.

Anglia Startup 10_01_16 small by A H, on Flickr

Running on the OMEX supplied base map at the moment in batch mode, well get it stable with this first and then investigate going sequential (need to check out VCT operation and cam sensor and then wide band lambda).

So, I can now get on with the cooling, sending off the trim etc. to the painters and sorting out the last couple of electrical issues.

I feel I am getting there and there is a still a possibility of getting to the Ace this year.

Also, need to decide whether to take the current bike throttle bodies off and put these bad boys on, these should be slightly better in terms of performance (but marginal) but may give me a bit more room on the inlet side as they are angled upwards a bit more.

Will keep you posted as usual when things progress.
