Bit of a impulse buy fueled by nostalgia having had two GTi's many years ago - this car came up for sale locally and having read about increasing interest in 80's classics I foolishly went to have a look...just have a look you understand...you guessed it, a few days later it was sitting in my garage...

If there's much interest I'll post a bit more info. but really pleased with it so far and its a little garage mate to my Tamora!

That explains it then. My memory has faded somewhat since my 205 days!
The slam panels left the factory like that as far as I can remember too.

The paint is a combination of original and repaint - I think its had new from wings and repainted doors too but the rest appears to be original?

Didn't think there would this much interest / love for a 205!...thought it would be me and my rose tinted memories! I'll post a but more detail up at lunch time.

It's got a Phase 1.5 interior, but phase 2 lights. That age 205 should have ambers. Like mine biggrin

Bit more info...

Its a 1988 1.9 Gti making it 26 years old...sound really weird saying that as cars of this generation still appear new (ish) to me! 12 owners and 95K miles and one of the main attractions of this particular car was how original it was, or unmodified is probably a more accurate description - seems quite rare to find one that hasn't had mods or is it just me?

There were a couple of downsides - no early history - no service book, etc just some old MOT's and receipts. Mind you, one of the receipts was for £3600 at 'Pug1off' where it had a full top end engine rebuild - there's no smoke at all, just the good old smell of hydrocarbons (None CAT). Other issues was the condition of the drivers side sill just ahead of the rear wheel arch - the be expected I guess and not something that would put off a potential purchase. Been repaired now...

The old man dusted off his welder (thanks Dad!)...from this...

to this...

to this...

...paint was £100 at a local place.

Apart from that all I've done is clean things and polish it!...a lot!

The starting point was good though, the list is...

- Work at Pug1off inc. engine work, suspension rebuild, new sensors, etc
- New radiator
- New oil cooler
- New discs n pads
- Full new 'standard Peugeot' exhaust
- Refurbed standard wheels (always loved the 1.6 & 1.9 wheels)
- 4 new Continental tyres (even the spare is good)
- full new stainless steel braided brake pipes
- its had loads of other stuff too such as new indicator lights, new driving lights at the front, etc, etc

Even came with an Alpine head unit!

The guy i bought it from (nice guy) reckoned it 'owed' him between £7K & £8K - needless to say I paid less than that.

Its not a concourse car / show piece, its been and will continue to be used and there's a few jobs to do, all minor stuff that can wait until the winter - just planning to drive it and have some fun with it for now.

C'mon then - what do you guys thinks its value is? Purely for insurance purposes of course!

Looks like a lovely example! Check the boot floor and inner wings/behind the headlights for any rust if you haven't already, but generally these things aren't bad at all for corrosion.

Enjoy!
Thanks 205pat

Inside the boot floor is clean and tidy - no rust. I inspected the underside of the boot floor when purchasing it as the seller kindly raised on his lift - its been cleaned up and painted but I'll check again. There are one or two little rust spots on the inner wings but nothing that I cant clean up, treat and paint. Winter jobs to add to the list!

I reckon you paid £3k for it.
Ha - close enough as to make no difference!

Costs so far are £100 for paint and, the best bit given the cost of insurance back in the day...£119 for a years fully comp on a classic policy.

Planning to keep costs to a minimum - my TVR Tamora is usually quite capable of costing money without even turning a wheel!

Plan was for a toy to tinker with and improve over the winter as there isn't much left to do on the Tamora (he says grabbing the largest piece of wood he can find). So far so good!

I also reckon it'll be worth a lot more if you hang on to it for a while. I had one of these and a 309 GTI back in the 90's. I'd like another 309 but trying to find a good one is hard enough, and the good ones out there are starting to rocket in value.
When I was an apprentice my boss had a 205GTi 1.6, which was nice enough, but it was replaced with a black 309GTi which I thought was the dogs bks! I know the general consensus is that the 309 doesn't look as good as the 205 but it drove bloody well!

I didn't really buy the 205 to make money but it would be nice if it did - even a little!

My Tamora 'owes' me more than its worth - more than I'm prepared to sit down and work out anyway!...so I know the score on that front.

Hope you find a decent 309GTi...isn't there a Goodwood special edition...in Green?

Lovely looking car Pete!!

Nostalgia must be rife, I bought a 1.9gti exactly a week ago and love it! Fortunately, it's got a history file to choke a horse, including original bill of sale. 108k miles but runs lovely. No rust either but does need a bit of fettling for sure. Parts are worse to obtain than my ur quattro!!!

Car looks great Nors - unusually, they seem to suit all colours?

Let me know any contacts re specialists / spares please - whilst I dont need anything major there are one or two bits i need to source too.

Some interesting replies - obviously still some love out there for 205 Gti's! Some great cars too.

Been drawing up a list of job's...

- hole in the dash - in the little plastic triangular part in front of the coin holder. Presumably something to do with a previously fitted alarm maybe - LED? Well now its just hole - can these be obtained relatively easily and if so from where?

- scratch in the dash - more like a gouge in the surface of the actual dash itself...nothing to bad but its annoying my OCD! Anyone know if this could be repaired by these 'chips away' type companies? If not its staying as not stripping out the dash.

- oil temp gauge not working - I understand this is common? I need to get under the car and check the wiring / connections as it might be a simple fix.

- other than that is a case of minor little bits here and there that I keep discovering and some basic maintenance / tarting up that I'll do over the winter when the car is off the road.

Still getting really positive reactions to it - even from the younger guys in the office (as in, they are younger than the car!).

Ok... Our for a short drive with the missus...even let her have a go!...got back and thought I would give the car a quick check over. Oil a bit low so topped it up...only to get on oil on my shoes!

Breather pipe split right round so new oil just poured out!

Best place to get new breather pipe(s)?

Bit of an update...

Been using the car on and off, even gave the missus a go in it....she wasn't impressed!...Got back home one day and decided to check the car over whilst is was on the drive - Tyres pressures, fluids, etc.

Discovered the oil was towards the lower mark on the dip stick so topped it up...only to discover the main breather pipe was split open = no new oil in the engine but all over the drive instead! Bought a polyurethane breather pipe kit and replaced them all.

Also discovered a oil leak from the sump so I'm currently replacing the sump gasket but cleaning up a few things at the same time. New sump gasket £7.32 delivered!

Hopefully get it back together at the weekend and try enjoy the rest of the month as I've decided to Sorn it until next year. The winter will give a chance to get underneath and tidy up / paint a few areas here n there.

Have to admit driving the car has been a laugh - its not as quick as I remember but that's maybe down to me driving the Tamora and BMW which are a faster as you would expect. Also, its seem to stick to the road better than I remember they did? I'm putting this down to the progress in tyre technology and perhaps me not being able to afford decent stuff when I was younger and had my other two GTi's...or maybe I'm not trying hard enough!

Bloomin' 'eck Pete, that sump's a disgrace lol...

Will it be getting powder coated or some POR15 treatment?

Good idea to take it off the road for the winter, it's too good to let the salt at it.

Paul
Pack it in Spensley!...its a work in progress! It was covered in black paint that looked like it had been applied with a stick!

Its now rust treated and undercoated and awaiting a nice top coat of black...hopefully tonight if I'm stuck at work...

Some great comments and other cars on here - obviously still a lot of love for these cars out there!

Would love a go in the Cosworth engined car!

Love the comment re the exhaust - yes, it looks oddly small by today's norm but its a new full length system and one of things that attracted me to this car was its mostly original and hasn't been messed with...even if the alterations ultimately mean an much improved car / driving experience.

Here's a better view of the pea-shooter!

Loving the old photos too....managed to dig out photos of my old 1.6 Gti's from back in day (apologies for the crap quality!)...

Started thinking about my old motorbike too...Yamaha FZR400RRSP...awesome thing...but that's another story from when I had no wife, no house, etc.

OK, its a relatively small and simple job and small beer compared to some of the excellent work shown elsewhere on PH but the sump gasket is on and new oil added.

All looked well so after a wash and clean I decided to go for a little drive / test drive and took a few pic's when I stopped for a quick inspection...

All in all quite pleased and proud of the old girl!
