Well following my adventures with the M3 over the last couple of years its now up for sale in the classifieds which allowed me to consider its replacement (original build thread here: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Replacement was found in the form of a 2012 458 Challenge car, but it was located all the way down in Italy at AF Corse and what a place it is...! More cars, trucks and spares than you can throw a stick at!

I'll let the pictures do the talking:

And shes noisy enough to make your ears bleed!!

Plan is to fit the Challenge Evo aero kit, 4-way dampers and upgraded anti-roll bars and enjoy some trackdays this year before contemplating a series to race it in next year.

All being well it will be out at the SLS final at end of September at Knockhill.

First track day on Wednesday - evening, who wants to see some videos??

Also need some thoughts on a humorous livery for it, something to make the best of its banana yellow paint...??

You must have some deep pockets

What is the difference in spec between yours and the road car.
My man maths says this will be a cheaper option than modding something else!!

Primary differences are:

Circa 400kg lighter than road car
Revised gear ratios
Plexan windows all round
Extensive use of carbon fibre panels
Revised suspension
Air jacks
Single nut wheel hubs
Brembo CCM carbon ceramic brakes as used on the 599XX
Switchable ABS and traction control systems
Fire extinguisher etc
Data logging

My 458 road car weighs in at a hefty 1740kgs with me and a full tank of fuel. The power of the challenge is identical to that of the road car but it should weigh in around 1250kgs with me and fuel which should make a huge difference as thats a huge amount of weight.

The road car did a 56s lap of Knockhill on road tyres - hoping I can get nearer 50s with this on slicks and some aero, fingers crossed.

Cheers guys - hope to see some of you up at KH, and just ordered myself an on-board camera so will be sure to get some vids up.

Why not mod the F430, well it was a scud, and I traded it for a 458 road car back end of last year. It's been out on track a couple of times but to be fair they are way too heavy and soft for track work :-)

There's been some pretty bonkers machinery at most trackdays so I'm hoping there won't be a massive speed differential...

Banana split sounds a good plan!

Colin - yes, 6-8pm, hopefully see you towards the end of night, and bring some decent weather with you!!

Back in the country literally 24 hours... nothing better than getting stuck in about it eh?

Aero kit starting to go on, all looks pretty straightforward but it will need longer brake cooling ducts.

All looks very tidy indeed, paintwork is average at best but I guess that's what to expect given its likely to be rubbing doors at some point :-)

Thinking of painting it white with green bits to match the old M3 colourscheme....

Am itching to get out Wednesday evening!!

Well I may have missed Knockhill last night but at least the car is coming along...

Air jacks are the nuts!!

CCM brakes are mahoosive - new pads going in

The power plant

Rear bumper off for aero kit fitting - also found an oil leak in the process

The offending part causing the oil leak - feed pipe from the oil reservoir to the dry sump pump

Not sure what will be the cause but you can just make out the hairline cracks

Rear wing on - pretty sure its big enough!

Front areo on - bumper needs a re-paint as it's only a very poorly applied vinyl at the moment

All being well work will allow play at Knockhill trackday on Monday 25th. Fingers crossed..

How did it go at Knockhill today? I only saw the car on track twice the whole day, and one of those times was me overtaking!

It looks absolutely outrageous and it sounds it too. Do knockhill have a sound limit?
Amazing pictures as always Jack!

This was first time out on track and ended up doing only two or three laps due to an engine misfire hence only running on 6 cylinders. Cars currently in having a new ion control unit which appears to be the offending part. Fingers crossed it will be out soon on all cylinders... Handling was immense even on cold tyres which made it all the more frustrating to have to pack up and go home!
