Just to introduce my new-ish daily driver….
Brought at around the £5k area, it needed a spot of love. To be honest, it still does as the paintwork could really do with a good machine polish and small attention in a few areas, but generally it’s superb!
To start with, it was filthy. How filthy? Well there was solid mud in all the rain gutters. The mud was so bad I pulled a worm out of a gutter when picking the mud out. Surface mould meant the only previous owner had never cleaned it, except maybe the lights with a brillo pad. I wish I was joking. The aircon didn’t work, and the engine had a ‘SERVICE NOW’ message screaming out. Also there was a strange fault with the radar parking detectors at the front and a clonking/knocking front suspension.
But the big bus pulled hard, ran nicely and is very comfortable. So a deal was done and she came home with me.
A service and a new aircon condenser and some front suspension work (droplinks) has set me back £700ish, and she is running perfectly. Scarcely believably she returns 30 mpg on my daily drives, and will quite happily rumble along at any speed you choose. She’s comfortable, very relaxing to drive, and I’ve added a Denison kit that removes the CD player and replaces it with an input for an ipod. Tax is a ridiculous £285/year and she’s just done a 800 mile round trip to Spa for the F1. Filthy weather, fully loaded and laden with kit – she didn’t miss a beat. Oh yes - under 85000 miles...
Lovely thing – this ‘fat Passat’ is going to be a keeper for some time (Gods and poor drivers around me permitting!)

Just an update really. Around 10,000 miles into the ownership, and I still totally adore this car. A few bits an pieces still need doing, but the aircon works now, and it's pretty happy about life. I have been 'advised'by the local dealers to replace the steering rack and all associated tubing for the piffling amount of £1100..... Erk! I doubt I'm going to do that, so I'm currently looking around for other ways to fix the issue.
Apart from that, it still gives 30mpg, still is a hoot, and is utterly brilliant. If jobs change then she would have to go - but I'm really not looking forward to that at all!
