I have been on H some years but never posted a readers car thread but I think this little car is worthy of it.So here it is my pint sized Golf GTi.Arguably a PH car I say arguably but its happy to rev its tits off day after day month after month and still start first time everytime. It handles really nicely in that it goes just where you point it.The engine note is lovely even standard as mine is it still makes some lovely induction noises.I still really enjoy getting in it and chucking it down the back lanes and I think thats what makes it a PH car.

I bought it almost two years ago as I needed a cheap but nippy vehicle having just retired from motorcycling.I spotted this locally with low miles going for about half a bag.I have always liked them having test driven one when they first came out in the late 90`s.It drove well enough considering its vintage so I handed over my wedge and drove off.Being a fussy bugger and a bit of an anorak I noticed looseness in the suspension and rattling from the gearbox. So that was it beginning with a gearbox rebuild then replacement of all the bushes. Then came the cambelt & waterpump and a freshening of the brakes and brake lines. Then finally several engine bits & bobs again to freshen it up.Then chucked in an Alpine head unit with OEM matching green display.Told you I was an anorak smile But what a difference it made smile

It averages mid thirties and has embarrassed a few larger capacity sportier cars.

So now it needs t be replaced and although the bodywork isnt perfect and I have to patch it up occassionally I dont know what the hell I am going to replace it with that will give me as much enjoyment for as little money.

Im sure it would do more if I (ahem) took my time a little more but you cant help dropping it down a gear. And it feels solid & unburstable

I'd wager the only possible Polo of ever getting classic status would be the G40
Totally agree, but then, I would wouldn't I.
I would have to agree with the G40 comment but lighten up people I was only writing about my experiences with this car and asking a question ?

I dont know maybe I asked for abuse.

The engine is quite a buzzy characterful engine, it's just the rest of the car is abit 'meh'. Admittedly, I could say the same about the G but for some reason it made the car the package it needed to be and gave the whole car character.
I know what you mean about the interior. The seats are an acquired taste but do the job and generally the interior is pretty hard wearing. Not the nicest place to sit but definitely not awful. The engine for me does make the car but imagine it with a G charger.I had a Golf G60 so although larger capacity I know how characterful and enjoyable that engine is.

Yes the title of the thread was a bit dumb having forgotten about the G40.Also the comment about embarrassing more powerful vehicles was equally full of bravado and dim wittedness.I have taken on more powerful cars in it but only beaten them because the other driver was not prepared to explore what their car could really do.

Your right about the gearing they register about 4k at 80 leptons in 5th so a bit busy biggrin

Having said all that im still struggling to think of what to replace it with.I either go full on and buy a cheap barge or stick with the hot hatch. The Ibiza could be a good call but not much else and it would have t be the older one as has been suggested here.I had a Golf Mk4 GTi and it was like a pogo stick when you tried to make progress.I guess changing the suspenders would sort that though.

This thread reminded me of our little Polo. A few years ago now but it was a decent little car. Not really up to parr with the French stuff of that era but did have a solid feel. Reliability for VW around this age was a low point unfortunately, allthough low mileage and FVWSH ours suffered a few common issues with these. Just checked the database and it's been off the road since 2009 so must have been scrapped. Shame as it was absolutely immaculate at 6 years old and 50k when we sold.
Looks rather good on the BBS wheels
