After owning one at the age of 19, I've always been a fan of these cars.

had the opportunity to buy a '93 4.0 sovereign in Flamenco Red metallic, so took the chance.

here she is in all her glory (before being washed!):

Low mileage with s/history and MOTs to back it up.

A few wee tweaks to be done then she'll be a nice little smoker.

full details of the collection epic can be found on my blog at

https://fuguttycars.wordpress.com/2014/12/21/i-cou...

Hope you like the car?!

Very nice! My best mate has just bought a 1990 Sovereign to replace his Mondeo temporarily as it's got valve trouble. 395 quid handed over for it and even though it's done intergalactic mileage seems to be a lovely car, so far! biggrin
I imagine the mondeo may stay off the road-a big barge like this is really one of the finest ways to travel!

Nice car, but put the twin headlights on it... Looks better
Thanks- it'll be keeping the sov headlights, not a big fan of the circular ones. Have plenty circular lights on my e30s

For sure.

It's the little touches, like the ashtrays in the rear doors and adjustable rear reading lights that make it. And the leather strap grab handles in the rear.
Yep,a few little touches make all the differencesmile

Too right, I had a go up the road in it and couldn't believe how comfortable it is compared to my XJS, lovely cars!
Here it is:

Not perfect by a long stretch and on poverty spec wheels, but still an awful lot of motor for that money.
Looks good-my first one was that coloursmile

Wheeltrims rock too!

Such a handsome car! biggrin I love the colour combination of your Jag - it's one of the best.

I love mine. They drive so well - a lot of people on Piston Heads don't realise just how good the XJ40 is. It seemed to get swept away with the "British cars are rubbish" thing, though that seems to be changing now.

I look forward to reading about your exploits as they unfold - hopefully not too many of them rust related...
Yeah, 'raspberry red' jag has been on the wishlist for a while-the interior just makes itsmile

I'll keep this thread and blog upto date.

Love it! I had a 2.9 Sov a few years ago and always wanted the 4.0, I ended up going the wrong way into a tree and I never properly got over it. I loved that car!

I have a hankering for one of these, badly, but the potentially high running costs are off sadly off putting!

However, my favourite quote from the blog had to be:

Something else was an approximation- the brakes were notable by their absence. This is obviously not an issue on an 1800kg 4.0l car. Not at all.

hehe
The way to look at it is that you can buy one outright for about the same as a month's repayment on a new one..

Then either learn how to fix em, or get a tame mechanic and off you go.

A mondeo tdci can throw a 1k bill no problem;)

Most of the reliability problems seem to stem from neglect (certainly the case on my low mileage X-type anyway) or normal wear and tear (brakes and tyres need replacing on any car) so even when things go wrong you still pay less than running a newer -insert model of boring box here- smile
That is essentially the reasoning behind my whole fleet..
