After owning one at the age of 19, I've always been a fan of these cars.
had the opportunity to buy a '93 4.0 sovereign in Flamenco Red metallic, so took the chance.
here she is in all her glory (before being washed!):
Low mileage with s/history and MOTs to back it up.
A few wee tweaks to be done then she'll be a nice little smoker.
full details of the collection epic can be found on my blog at

Hope you like the car?!

Very nice! My best mate has just bought a 1990 Sovereign to replace his Mondeo temporarily as it's got valve trouble. 395 quid handed over for it and even though it's done intergalactic mileage seems to be a lovely car, so far!
I imagine the mondeo may stay off the road-a big barge like this is really one of the finest ways to travel!LewG said:
Too right, I had a go up the road in it and couldn't believe how comfortable it is compared to my XJS, lovely cars!
Here it is:
Not perfect by a long stretch and on poverty spec wheels, but still an awful lot of motor for that money.
Looks good-my first one was that colourHere it is:

Wheeltrims rock too!

Such a handsome car! I love the colour combination of your Jag - it's one of the best.
I love mine. They drive so well - a lot of people on Piston Heads don't realise just how good the XJ40 is. It seemed to get swept away with the "British cars are rubbish" thing, though that seems to be changing now.
I look forward to reading about your exploits as they unfold - hopefully not too many of them rust related...

I'll keep this thread and blog upto date.

OP, I'm liking your word invention; " shenanigry " in particular
Thanks- sometimes it is a bit difficult to stick to actual words to describe the situations we find ourselves in..Sizing up a pipe and flat cap as we speak

I have a hankering for one of these, badly, but the potentially high running costs are off sadly off putting!
However, my favourite quote from the blog had to be:
Something else was an approximation- the brakes were notable by their absence. This is obviously not an issue on an 1800kg 4.0l car. Not at all.
The way to look at it is that you can buy one outright for about the same as a month's repayment on a new one..However, my favourite quote from the blog had to be:

Then either learn how to fix em, or get a tame mechanic and off you go.
A mondeo tdci can throw a 1k bill no problem;)

Most of the reliability problems seem to stem from neglect (certainly the case on my low mileage X-type anyway) or normal wear and tear (brakes and tyres need replacing on any car) so even when things go wrong you still pay less than running a newer -insert model of boring box here-
That is essentially the reasoning behind my whole fleet.. Gassing Station | Readers' Cars | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
