Having had the car on the road for a few week's now I thought I'd start my own thread about It.

It's a 1989 Mercedes Benz 300TE-24 Seven seater In smoke silver with brazil brown leather Interior.

It's got a nice spec on It which Include's electric ortho/memory leather seat's tilt/slide electric sunroof, front/rear electric window's, climate control, cruise control.

I bought It damaged earlier this year and have had It repaired at a local bodyshop which consisted of new front driver's wing/headlamp panel and headlight.

After covering approx 300 miles on mixed road types It drives really well so far and I love the 24 valve 3 litre engine, very smooth and can shift reasonably well If needed to (It's the four speed auto version).

After having a quick look over It most thing's still work (even the really comfy ortho seats) as they should though there are a few thing's on the to do list -

1. Speedo doesn't work so currently driving with the satnav on everywhere - Hopefully a speedo cable change will cure this.

2. The passenger front electric headrest doesn't want to go back up after lowering It - I think I can hear the motor working with the switch pressed so possibly just stuck from lack of use?

3. Passenger rear door's electric window switch doesn't work though It work's from the centre console.

4. Self close bootlid doesn't close Itself however I can hear the motor work when shutting the boot.

Nothing really bad I guess but I'll hopefully get them all working and I've now got the part's to give It a good service Including plug's , air/oil/fuel/auto gearbox filter's , Water pump, New distributor cap and rotor arm and a filter for the steering rack.

And finally It need's a good clean Inside and out, there's moss and grime from lack of washing on the badge's and window rubber's though the paintwork Itself Is good.

Finger's crossed It's a quiet day for me tomorrow and I can make a start on It.

That's a perfect spec car - why do I never get to see these cars when they go on sale! Champagne exterior and brown leather with orthopedic seats... Lovely!

Does the rear window make a noise when you press the button - I've done two window regulators on my w124, they are a known weak point.
No I think It's silent when pressed though I've only tried It once.

There was a scary moment when I tried the electric sunroof for the first time as It stuck In the fully open position however after moving It about a bit seems to have cured It.

The same with the rear wash wipe that shuddered a bit when almost at the end of It's sweep for a while but after some more use has seemed to fix Itself.

Thanks for the comment's guy's and gal's!

Sorry I did mean soft-close on the tailgate rather than It closing It totally by Itself.

Oh and I found out It has an electric steering column too, makes getting a good seating position a bit easier.

The bodywork was £600 for the front corner repair/paintwork plus part's.

Colour match Is good though he did get It wrong the first time round.

I've not Idea If the suspension has any problem's underneath but It's drives well enough so far, I'll know more when I get It up on a ramp.

The other half surprised me at Christmas with a neat little present that I fitted today -

It think It's great though I don't know If It's breaking any law's showing an expired tax disc?

First time I've driven In the dark tonight, good god the headlight's are a bit dim I'll have to look Into getting brighter bulbs asap.

There's a economy gauge on this import 300-24 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQI4MuZI9pA

Though I've not seen enough of them to know If they are rare on the 24v cars.

Well not too much progress at the moment however It's had a service which included the oil/air/fuel/gearbox filter's replacing and will have the steering rack filter/distributor cap + rotor arm/cabin filter next week.

The thing Is though I've just bought another Mercedes - A W211 320 cdi avantgarde In silver with contrasting black leather.

Ill see how It goes but I don't think I'll be keeping them both.

Well still no further on the with the car as I'm struggling to get the speedo fixed.

With It removed we saw the cable Isn't broken (which would be right as the odometer still work's) and tried returning the needle to It's normal position but the minute It's driven again the needle just goes straight past the end of the clock's.

Does anyone know of somebody that can repair these w124 speedo's?

I could just go on ebay and buy another but I'd rather keep It original If I can.

Also,

The W211 320cdi we have Is still a cracking car and will be having It's first service with us very soon though I'm going to go above a normal service with a gearbox/diff oil change along with the usual "B" schedule.

Well I guess It had to happen at some point but It still really P*ssed me off when I found It vandalised the other day.

Three similar looking dents on one of the front wing's, they've not broken the paintwork so maybe If taken off the wing can be repaired.

Also I've found out It's ran out of Mot since early sept which is just as well It's not been used for ages.

No picture's of the damage just yet as I'm disinterested with It at the moment and a recent new quote to Insure It has more than doubled In the last 12 month's which hasn't helped. frown

Another small job which I've now started was the driver's wing mirror didn't fit flush so with It removed I've found out why.

Two metal mount's have snapped Inside which would usually allow the mirror to move forward's/backward's after a small knock, because they have snapped the mirror will sit not right.

I've stripped the colour-coded outer cover from the frame but will have to search around for a heated mirror frame ,just In case they are different to normal ones.

However this might not be as difficult as I first thought as I've just won a job lot of w124/s124 part's on ebay!

I only bidded on It for the 16' wheel's which will fill my arches better while looking original mercedes.

This Is the Item number - 151860269664

So hopefully there's a few other bit's and bob's that will help with the car and If any other fellow W124/S124 owner's need anything drop me a pm

You did worry me for a minute about the size of the wheel's but I've checked the car just now and it's currently on 15's rather than 16's.

I've also seen a link on a w124 forum someone's posted to a eBay seller that's listed loads of brand new febi-bilstein parts dirt cheap so I've just bought two front wishbones, rear link arms ,complete front link set and balljoints.

I'll have a browse to see if there's anything else going cheap!

Well after a couple of very tiring trip's to collect the job lot I won everything's back at my unit and I can honestly say I've never seen a bigger collection of part's other than being at an actual car breaker's.

It took me three hour's to load the first trip Into my lwb sprinter van.

The part's that I think I'll need to fix the niggly little job's that needed doing are all here beside's a lot more.

Though one of the sportline 16' wheel's I fancied need's a refurb but I really can't complain for the money!

The front end and rear link rod's have arrived so just waiting for the front arm's to arrive.

I've been looking up prices for a complete front and rear sachs or bilstein suspension set along with spring's while I'm doing the rest of the suspension but can't seem to find any that's not really, really expensive (I'm talking nearly £800!), does anyone have any pointer's for any better priced set's anywhere?

Another small update.

After a hunt around for better prices I've now purchased a set of front\rear Sachs shock's and spring's which arrived today.

These are pictured here along with the front links, front arm's and rear links.

I may get new sphere's to go with the rest while I'm at It along with any other suspension part's I've forgotten at the moment.

Looking forward to getting started now and am glad I've not done anything hasty like selling It without even having some good use from It.

Small update...

Well I couldn't let the S124 go and as quick as the 911 came It's now gone, I just didn't gel with It at all.

Though since the last time I posted the car's jacked right up the rear suspension, I'm guessing the sphere's but I'll be getting It checked over anyway.
