The £3900 Range Rover l322
Discussion
Browsing eBay as you do during your lunch break and I found a Range Rover td6 l322 for just £3900. 22 hours left on the auction with no bids. Got hold of the man and got told I can take it for £3900 if I come next day.
Grabbed mum and drove to the south of Wales that night, left at 8pm and arrived at half 5. Slept in my car for 2 hours outside the mans house. Had a quick look round the car, seemed ok, so got mum to drive it home. Averaged 33.2 mpg from South Wales to Inverness.
It's a 2002 td6 Range Rover vogue, auto box done 40k ago, turbo done, full suspension replaced, remapped, refurbed injectors.
Has been in a smash prior and is cat c or d, not sure which. Has lots and lots of small problems.
Drivers door window switches don't work,
passenger door doesn't lock on the fob,
water in rear light,
sand in the fog lights,
paintwork poor on front bumper,
sunglasses holder falls down,
plastic round seat is broken,
high level brake light has loads of leds out,
Seats worn,
Brake caliper sticking on slightly.
No pictures of my own at the moment so here is the sellers,
Edit: also came with a spare engine

Been under it today. Not that bad.
Offside lower arm needs bushes
Nearside front anti roll bar link is knocking
Brake pipes are getting fairly crusty so could do with being done
2 tyres have slow punctures and none match
Fuel sensor is broken too, goes into limp mode, just unplugged it and getting a fault on dash but car works fine

Work it out for yourself!
Brim the tank. Do a trip of a given (long-ish) distance. Brim the tank again. Divide number of miles travelled by number of gallons used.
Tried to brim the tank before I left, took the max of £99 for pay at the pump and wasn't full. Figured it would be weird to pay and top up again so just left.Brim the tank. Do a trip of a given (long-ish) distance. Brim the tank again. Divide number of miles travelled by number of gallons used.

No just continue to be really happy that you are (or not) getting such great MPG - why spoil it with the real figure.Brim the tank. Do a trip of a given (long-ish) distance. Brim the tank again. Divide number of miles travelled by number of gallons used.
Surely if ever there was a car that needs man maths.....
Also my speedo is out by like 7% so cant manually calculate it either.

If the speedo is fast, surely it will click the miles round fast?
Bought 2 new tyres for now, can't afford all 4 in 1 go
Doubt it, just because the speedo needle may be calibrated out, doesnt mean the odometer has to be.Bought 2 new tyres for now, can't afford all 4 in 1 go

Quick bit of offroading today as it was nice weather
Came out to it this morning and set off like normal.
Drove around town a bit with 6 or so stops where I got out and had to start the car in 30 minutes.
Final time it started and displayed "hdc inactive" with "trans fail safe prog" appearing after moving off. Absolutely shat a brick thinking it was new gearbox time. It locked it's self into 4th gear which wasn't actually that bad, even if it was slow to set off and revved high.
Got home and naturally checked the battery, first plugged into a charger which after 10 seconds said it was ready. Tried check with a voltage tester which came up as full also. Was a little puzzled so read up on the ffrr website, seems even if the battery seems ok these range rovers like a perfect condition battery.
Bought a big 110ah 920cca battery which must be almost 40cm long! Tight squeeze but it's in and the car has sorted it's self out!
Got a auto electrician coming up soon to sort the wiring mess of trailer lights and hopefully sort a input for a reversing camera.
Other than this, it's been a fairly trouble free 3500 miles in the cheapest l322 I've seen

Thanks guys.
Going to get round to sorting my front passenger door that doesn't lock or unlock on the fob, unlocks fine by pulling handle inside and locks with a manual press down on the little stick.
Window doesn't work via drivers side switch so presuming a split wire somewhere near the door hinge?
Anyone had his?

That's it done 4000 miles in my ownership in 2 months.
Been calculating the mpg doing the brim to brim method, coming in at 24.2 mpg over my 500 miles a week.
Total cost has been just 2 tyres, a battery and a drop link.
However, gearbox isn't too happy going into drive after sitting in neutral, takes a few seconds to engage. Solved it by just creeping up to lights in drive for now. It was a returned box so presuming they didn't change all the parts.
Might try a oil change just to see if it saves it.

Does it drop into neutral when stopped? I know some auto boxes do that now, but it's quite a new thing.Picked up a set of broken rear lights, one cracked at the base (goes from base and up 2 inches) to replace my one that is full of water and misting up. Will be able to sell the misting up one for more than the pair of cracked ones costed. The other one is pretty much garbage as half the lens is gone.
Changed 4l of the gearbox oil on Friday. Easy job really.
Open filler plug
Open drain plug
Drain all oil, will only get 4l or so as you can only get what's in the sump
Replace drain plug
Run metre of hose from fill plug up through engine bay and attach funnel (there's a prop giving like 4cm of space to try put oil in if you don't run a hose)
Pour new oil in
Once full, turn car on and cycle through gears a few times
Add more oil
Replace filler plug
Job done
Could do with it being done again due to the fact you can't change all the oil in one go.
The oil which came out smelt burnt which worries me. Is this normal for a 50k miles auto tranny?
In other news, mums taking the car on holiday for 10 days so I'm stuck at home.

Car did 1700 miles with mum on holiday faultlessly. Then drove to Bradford and back.
It's currently done over 8000 miles in the 3 months I've had it.
It's last trip has done its box though I fear.
Sadly the gearbox failed 20 miles from home! Drove from Inverness to Norfolk and back, pulled off the a9, everything was happy. It changed down to second for the first time since I got on the a9, trans fail safe! Smelt very hot under bonnet and oil cooler was toasty. Hoping it's just burnt it's oil and fresh oil might save it.
As it sits, won't engage drive but will engage reverse, weird.
In more positive news, the defender is in good nick for the price

There was no vibration coming to a stop, i was still moving and the message popped up. Drove under its own steam up hill for 200 yards till I could find a passing place large enough. Then turned it on and off, message went, drove another 100 yards just fine till the message popped up. Pulled over again and then it wouldn't go into drive. Would reverse just fine though.
Not sure its a zf box anyway? Fairly sure its the st gm box.
What sort of price would a recon box cost?
