Now sold for an V70XC

Car purchase £630
Maintenance £232
Sold for £650

I've had it for 17 months so just on running cost that about £14 pm. Not bad.
Even if you add the tax and insurance it still works out around £56 pm.

Cheap motoring indeed

Thought I'd start a thread to keep track of my purchase and see if I can keep to budget.

Took one of the popular leases last year, a Golf GTD at 15Kpa (with maintenance), a total of 30K. Was quite surprised at the excess mileage fee, 22.04ppm for the first 4.5K miles over 30K and an absolutely whopping 33.04ppm thereafter!
I figured as I've also got an Elise, an the wife's MX5 I should be able to keep to 15K. Less than a year in and I'm at 18.5K! That works out at around 37K for handback, or £1817!!

That's a good a reason as any for buying a shed, if it's going to cost me that anyway, I might as well get a new toy out of it. Considered a V70 a while back but parking is a bit of an issue and the tax + insurance on top made it uneconomical as I didn't really need it.

I've been perusing the classifieds for a while, sad to say AT and ebay is far more user friendly these days that PH. Watched quite a few auctions to get an idea of price. Saw a few T5's which were very tempting but considering my existing fleet probably overkill.

Spotted this early V70 10V and dropped the seller a text. Got a phone call back, very pleasant guy willing to answer the numerous questions I had even though most are stated in the advert. 152K, three owners (though one was a garage) Did mention it was also an import.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2015...

Went down to see it. Saw it at his home as I viewed on an evening. Sadly no history at all bar an expired MOT with several advisories on it. No idea if it's had a cambelt. Seller had put a new battery on it but bar that it was sold as seen. He told me he used to be a trader but gave it up a while back, this was the last of his his old stock he was selling off. Maybe naive but I believed him. Nothing else showing as for sale on the trader on his account and seemed a honest chap. I'm really not expecting a warranty at this price and the fact i'm 200 miles away makes it pretty redundant anyway.

Had a quick drive. Everything seemed to work. Engine management light on but drove well. Boot a bit rattly, poss the striker pin, NSF window slow to operate but works. Bit of oil around the rocker cover. Bit of a blowback from the dipstick hole which I understand could mean blocked breathers.

I know you should never buy the first you see, I know I should have given it a more through inspection and prob bartered a bit harder on price but though sod it, seller has been helpful and i'm time short so lets do the deal.

Agreed sale at the asking price. Paid a deposit. Seller to MOT, clear fault light, change oil, replace oil filter, replace air filter and provide HPI report.

I could accept losing that kind of money if it goes tits up but hopefully, please please please, it'll be as good gold.

Pics to follow.

After spending a Sunday morning at work online, managed to get insured for a bargain bucket £240. I'm only at work due to a roster cock up so sat here doing sweet FA otherwise. If I take into account earnings at time and a half I'm doing very well indeed!

Thanks for info. TBH it doesn't seem to be dipstick blowing too badly. Hoping a could of oil changes will help clear any gunk.
I know they are long life engines. Cambelt would probably be wise but considering the minimal mileage I expect to do I'll probably risk it. Don't want to get into my usual habit of making it perfect.
Will re evaluate one I've picked it up and given it a proper once over.

Picked her up last week as did a short run to s storage location about 50 miles away. So far no problems, seems to run ok. All functions seem to work though the cruise buttons need a good press to engage.

On picking up I noticed the spoiler I had previously thought was loose, was now missing. I'm told on it's way to MOT it blew off and sods law ended up under the wheels of an artic. 2nd faux par in my excitement I forgot to get the HPI certificate so I'm not sure if that was done or not. To be fair I did get an invoice showing the oil and filters which we agreed and there is fresh oil in the car and a new air filter. I did get him to knock £20 off as there was minimal fuel in the car.
Knew the tread was good but had assumed cheap tyres. Was pleased to note only one cheapy, paired with a Bridgestone. The other set are matching Goodyears.

First job, took it to Wolverton Hand Car wash. Those boy are good and do a thorough job. £15.

Pics aren't great due to cracked lens but you get the idea.

Well, finally got her back home to York on Tuesday. Lovely drive home, took her up to about 90, no problems whatsoever. Even sourced a Best of the 70's tape to keep me entertained.

Stopped at Leicester services to a bite of the Colonel's finest, was lovely to be able to drive up to the front and park without worrying about dints, scratches and the other things that has me walking 1/4 mile to the supermarket when I'm in one of the other cars..

She's done one skip run already, strangely satisfying. I feel more of a man now that I've done a skip run in a Volvo estate smile

Couple of little issues. RH bonnet catch has become stuck locked twice. Thankfully after a few goes it has released. I've given it a bit of a clean and a squirt of WD40 and seems to work better now. 2nd thing, boot trim is very rattly which I think is a common problem, but not one that is much of a concern TBH.
2 things on the MOT advisory, slight play in both steering rack and RH ball joint. Other things were slight discolouring of light lenses but again, nothing I'm worried about.

Was quite surprised to hear from the seller this morning. The spoiler broke off between deposit and collection and he had said he would source me one, get it painted and courier it up to me...yeah right I thought, not a chance at this price of car. Anyway, he text saying it went for paint Tue and he was due to pick it up today. Will be very pleased if it does arrive, very honest and genuine of him. Lots of pro's get a bad rap, traders especially but this guy seems a good one. Shame he's wrapping up his business. Even though I gave asking he can't have made a massive amount what with the battery, MOT, oil, 2 filters and the spoiler costs on top.

Anyway, some pics. Had a £15 hand car wash a week or so back and i've just given the engine bay a quick wipe over, bar that, it's had nothing else.

Interesting wiring repair

She is indeed an exotic beauty, well Flemish.

Ordered a battery isolator £7.93. Also have one on the Lotus, good bit of kit.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B007C7CJT4?psc=...

Was tempted to replace the tailgate gas struts as they're struggling a bit but decided to leave it for now. It's an easy job if I do need to do it at about £25.
Damn bonnet latch stuck again today. Decided to just remove the thing. It does still have the OS latch and of course the secondary pull handle so seems fairly secure. Nightmare would be that I isolate the battery then can't get under the hood to start it.

Unfortunately insurance is mandatory or I wouldn't bother with it on a car at this price and this little milage.

Most of the quotes were £500+. Did quite a bit of searching and tweaking to get it to £240. I'm not sure value makes that much of a difference to the premium.

34yrs
Good area
16 yrs driving
No accident/incidents
0 NCB
IAM advanced & RoSPA Gold
3K per year
Import (made it cheaper)

Notable point being the 0 NCB. The NCB scheme that insurers push only allow you to use that particular discount on one particular car. I even considered the multi-car type schemes but again, the discount could only be applied to a particular car on that scheme.

As it stands I now have three sets of NCB all accruing, that's why I never bother protecting them, I'll just switch round if I need to.

Tried a few people and took recommendations from here. No companies would mirror unless I had a current policy with them. Tbh, I'm really happy with the price I got, my golf is only £60 cheaper with 8 yrs ncb.

Had a go at the spoiler today. Still can't believe the seller kept his word and had one sent up to me. Top bloke.

Worth at least 20BHP

Sadly a problem at the other end. Bonnet unlock has reared it head again frown

2 catched on this car. The NS was playing up so I removed the catch and have been using the OS catch only.
No the bloody OS is stuck fast and I can't get it to pop at all.

Still driving the car and she's running lovely but if I do have an issue or even need to top up screenwash, I'm in the doo.

Anybody have any tips to try?

Had a bit of a panic recently. Took her out for a test run as she had not been used for a few weeks and we had a long journey to do over to Carfest last weekend.

Got about 5 mile up the road and revs started to die down. No misfire, no strange noises, just died. Would restart but any throttle and it would cut out. bks. Massive headache as I needed the car for the camping trip. fketty fketty fk.

I knew it was lowish on fuel and was planning to stop on way back as it showed 30 miles on computer which I know from experience is plenty. I think being low and not being used caused the float to stick and I'd run the old girl drybanghead

Anyway, borrowed a friends car to go fetch my fuel can which was cleverly stored at home and she spurted back into lifesmile
Did the camping trip and she's not missed a beat.

Just coming round first chicane at Oulton Park. Track beast.

Well Insurance was looming so took her in for MOT early to see if it was worth renewing.
Kept my eye on the online site to see the results as quickly as possible, exciting stuff.
FAILfrown
But wait, looking down the long list its, lamp, lamp, lamp lamp, you get the picture.
6 new lamps and a quick beam adjustment and it's a pass. The indicator lamps were getting on a bit and though working the orange coating had worn away.
Well done to the old girl. She got a £20 of fuel and as a treat I've booked her in for an air con recharge next week. Hopefully she'll have a strong bladder.
Reinsured using the comparison websites. One much cheaper quote with Tesco at £208 FC (TPFT was 285confused)

Went out to a dead car yesterday. Nothing at all. Thought ahh, must have left the battery isolator on. Checked it, nope, electrics engaged an it was only used four days previous.
Got the multimeter on it, 1.2 laugh. that'll be a knackered battery then. have charged it a few times over the previous few months but I guess the current cold spell we're having up North finished it off.
Local indie sold me a new one for £60.

Air con I tried last time never worked. Just leaked straight out. ATS refunded the £30 as they were unable to do it, great. The ham fisted treat ripped out the coolant sensor when lifting the resevoir, not so great. Didn't bother having it out with them, local specialist provided a new sensor for £13 so not too bad.

Quick update just so I can keep an eye on costs.
Did an oil change a few weeks back with a gallon of Opie's finest.
No major problems over the last few months. Hearing some noise from the NSF when at 40+ so thinking possibly a wheel bearing. Not sure what to do about that.
Just ticked over 159K and engine and gearbox peachy.
I am considering a change though and have been looking at XC70. Quite a lot of money though and often with many more miles on the clock.

Well, new owner just took my baby away. Always quite sad when I sell cars as I do form a bond with them.

£650 sat here which is great but if I had the space, I probably would have kept her.

Ahh well, slightly up on what I paid for her. Will do the calculations of running costs and post up later. Going to have a little drink and remenis the good times.
