Here's my latest car, 1998 Evo V.

Fresh import, 142k kms (with full service history from the one japanese owner, fresh clutch, timing belt, water pump, fluids and underseal on arrival. Car has had some subtle mods, coilovers, wheels, cat back exhaust, upper and lower strut braces and well as some fettling under the bonnet (need to go to a specialist to find out exactly what though - appears to be nothing major as standard air box & cat is still there).

Car was supplied by Max @ Hurst Cars, who I can't recommend higher. There's a lot of sharks with imports and Max is definitely one of the good guys.

I'll let the pics do the talking:

Cosying up with his Saab Shed buddy...

Full album here - http://s1050.photobucket.com/user/karl_mac_/librar...

Bought unseen and was the first time I've taken the train to collect a car, the drive back from Bedford was pretty grim in the rain though.

Car is seriously clean underneath, mechanical rock solid, so plan is not to mess with it too much and enjoy a (hopefully appreciating) classic. Needs a little more power and the interior could do with some tidying.

Id have wet myself in that warehouse of Evos and Imprezas!
You should have seen the S201. First time I've seen one in the flesh and it was amazing.

The clutch biggrin
The one that came out of this was the original clutch, that was in better condition than that laugh

keep it standard and looking oem. too many abused ones out there now

they look great on the road still in oem spec. I saw a bright red makkinen last week and it looked brilliant.
Thats the aim. Anything I do I'd like to be bolt on so I can quickly put it bacj to standard.

Used it to drive to work today, its a but heavy going in traffic!

Have the older Evo's prices started to firm up yet??
Evo 6 TMEs are well in excess of £15k for a good one now. E1-3 seem to have avoided the classic bubble and 4s are still pretty cheap (by comparison). I'm hedging my bets on this being the car Mitsi started their proper WRC onslaught. I don't expect it to double in price but I'm hoping it at least holds it value while clean ones are harder to come by.

Took it out to it's first meet last night as the weather was so nice.

Correct sized number plates and mph clocks ordered. Over the weekend I'll be having a go at taking off the window diffusers and drilling the airbox for a bit more sound - I've been advised against going for an open cone as the standard airbox is supposed to be fine up to 400ish bhp

Plan is to smarten it up a bit (re-paint calipers, have bits of interior re-trimmed/repaired) and get power to around 350-360bhp, then just drive the wheels off it.

Not sure long term, I'm going through a 'bucket list' of cars at the moment, so only keeping things a short time. This last year alone I've had my first Golf GTI, Impreza and my first sub-£1000 shed (and now Evo). I really, really want an R33 GTR at some point before they get out of my budget.

How does it compare to your subaru?
Straight line its not as quick, but then the scoob was running 320-330bhp, so when I have the Lancer mapped I'll report back. The noise is nice for an I4 but not much beats the sound of any flat engine.

However the handling is a different story. It just feels so light on its feet and agile its crazy. Most of my previous cars have been souped up hatches and now I really understand the difference between 'on paper' fast and 'real world' fast. My Focus ST had more power but wouldn't know which way this Lancer went.

Also loving the fact needs nursing when cold and all the other classic car foibles that make driving them an event

I'd love a Classic Impreza for a DD to go with this.

This, you should do this wink Lovely car OP but these wheels do nothing for me.
Yeah they're not great are they? laugh I was considering having them powder coated white but might just swap them for a set of Enkei.

Nice car! Always been a Scooby man, want to try an Evo but from what I've heard re: fuel range and servicing intervals it would break me frown
They're generally very reliable, but are undeniably heavy on fuel, and occasionally dreadfully expensive, maintenance wise. I was putting 4 tyres on mine at every service ( 4.5k miles! ) at one point in it's early life, but that's the downside of the way they like to be driven. I ran an Impreza alongside the Evo for 2 or 3 years, very different cars in their approach to handling.
I think they're ok as a second car. If I ran this as my daily I think it would break me too!

Couldn't handle the standard stereo, so went and bought the cheapest head unit I could find, chavvy as hell but miles better than the standard effort.

Picked up a Forge recirc valve to replace the standard one which is known to be weak.

Once the old one was out I noticed it was bodged.

Shiny valve bought from MLR member.

And gratuitous pic from DubFiction.

Also bought a new daily...

Cracking colour.
Thanks, took some tracking down to find an FR in Alor Blue.

So, went for a hoon around Yorkshire with a few local PHers.

It became apparent that now it was running full boost there was a misfire under full load, so booked into Noble Motorsport to have it looked at.

The result - a healthy 265bhp with the misfire at 6.5k, so its lost 11bhp in 17 years, not bad going! Misfire is suspected to be plug related - main suspect is the importer fitting plugs with too small a gap when it was serviced.

For anyone in the area I can't recommend Noble any higher. Great guys with none of the usual tuner nonsense. Car will be going back to them for plugs and stage one mods when funds allow.

Long time since an update! It's been tucked away for winter so first thing was to go to TRL in Halifax for a service and fluid change, changing to 10w50 and 5.1 brake fluid after boiling the old fluid at phss Silverstone.

TRL confirmed the car is in great mechanical nick, there are a few suspension components showing wear and a split cv boot, but nothing too frightening given the sort of bills these cars can chuck up. AYC / drivetrain had a good check over.

Been to a few PHSS already, including Bruntingthorpe and Santa Pod.

More importantly I've changed the bloody awful wheels!

A set of factory Enkei from an Evo 7RS. Bit of a gamble as I couldn't find any pics of them fitted to a V. Delighted with how they've turned out.

Not sure what next. Paint needs attention but I'm also a massive fan of patina, so might just have it clayed and polished and see how it comes out.

Hi Karl - lovely car ! I also attended the PH Sunday Service meet recently at Santa Pod in my Evo V - Silver ! I parked a bit further down from you R206 CCY - I also purchased mine from Max at Hurst Cars !!!!
Hi Rob, I did see your car at pod but I think you'd gone by the time I got my camera out. Car looked really clean, don't see many standard ones around, especially in silver.

Came back to my car to find it between two Evo X as well, bit of a rarity for a PHSS to see so many!

Hi Karl - thank you ! Yes I am really pleased with it, Max had the AYC Pump replaced for me. I also got it undersealed to protect it. I have always loved the V and VI Evo's and finally managed to purchase it back in December. I am taking it around Europe, France, Monaco, North Italy, Geneva, Switzerland, Germany, and Amsterdam in late May / June for two weeks planning to do 3000 miles in it and I can't wait...!!!

I understand it is original and this was the main reason I purchased it. It does have a double plate clutch which is noisy and takes some getting used to when you engage the clutch it grinds and makes a hell of a noise !

Planning to go to the Morgan Meet on Sunday so may see you there if you are going..
Sounds epic, you'll be seeing a lot of fuel stations!

I plan to be at Morgan, just not sure in which car yet. The Evo needs a refresh underneath (wheel bearing, cv boot and a tie rod end) so I'm a little nervous going for long journeys until its been looked at!

Pressing on with small bits of tittivation ready for Japfest on Sunday.

Grills had no paint left on them, so a few coats of UHT went on. Matt finish sort of ties in with rest of car, if I can find some UHT laquer I might go over it again.

Spotted out and about with fellow PHer Pilchard8

I've speculatively listed it at the moment, if it sells it speeds up the timeline for my next purchase but hanging onto it for longer is no great hardship!

The two I have my eye on are an R33 GTR or a Mazda RX7, leaning towards the Mazda first, then the GTR after that. Should have crossed most of my Gran Turismo bucket list then (maybe another Impreza (a classic this time)).
