So after driving M3s and Evos for the past few years I thought it was time to grow up a bit and buy something a bit more sensible. Always lusted after a V8. Originally I was looking at B7 RS4s but decided that with the amount of motorway miles I'll be doing next year that they would get a bit tiring. Spotted this for sale, reasonable price, decent spec (manual, B & O, bluetooth) and liked the colour. It does (I think) look quite classy.
A very different drive to the M3. It's not the last word in handling finesse but by god can it cover ground quickly. The engine is an absolute peach, it gathers pace with quite frightening serenity. The noise of that V8 is marvellous, if a tad muted from inside the cabin.
I like it....a lot. Took it on a drive from my house to the North coast yesterday along some amazing roads and loved every second of it. Averaged 15mpg and saw 3mpg on the display at one point. Thats on very twisty roads with lots and lots of hard acceleration though. Almost hit 30mpg on the motorway back from collecting it.......however, you don't buy a V8 to watch the MPG and have now switched the display off.

Nice car enjoy it, have a little tickle with the exhaust for even more grins
Luckily, I have a house in England 10 mins from MRC, milltek and a remap are #1 on the shopping list.

Out of curiosity, do you have any sort of extended warranty on it? I would imagine repairs will cost a pretty penny.
Got a rather good 6 month warranty with the car. I've had issues with these 'free' warranties before so went through this one with a fine tooth comb and it's actually very comprehensive, it can (and will) be extended.

After running an 11 year old M3 for the past 2.5 years and 40,000 miles I'm used to the odd massive bill.

So the day after I get my milltek fitted and car remapped, out for a drive on a wee country lane. Meet anther car and pull well over to the right and stop for him to get past.....the muppet misjudges, turns back in too early and catches my back arch with his bumper. Has wrecked my arch and rear bumper.

Despite the fact that I ws stationary at the time of the incident and he drove into me, when we got out he was insisting it was my fault?!?!? He had a spare 1.5 metres of room but simply misjudged it. Could not believe that he was not admitting responsibility.

Unfortunately for him, the car which was behind him had a dash cam and caught the whole thing....clearly showing me being completely stationary, the spare amount of room that he had and his ridiculously poor judgement. I will be investing in a good dash cam now.

Absolutely raging, the guy was driving a stty old mazda and has wrecked my pride and joy. Could not believe that he was still saying it was my fault, when he accepted that I was stationary, he then said that he skidded into me. The dash cam clearly shows him braking, then coming off the brakes and coming around my car and just turning in too early. fking ahole.

On the up side. I had a non-resonated Milltek cat-back fitted the day before and had the car re-mapped by MRC in Banbury. The V8 now sounds absolutely amazing......not mega loud but a beautiful rumble. The car is a lot nippier now too thanks to the re-map, particularly lower down in the revs. These 2 upgrades have made the car sooooooo much better than standard. I am ridiculously happy with the car now. Just a shame that muppet-man had to wreck it by driving into me. Still, the car will get fixed and all will be ok.

Shame about the idiot, but at least it will get sorted.

Those power figures look low? I thought these were 340 ps standard? the graph makes it look like yours was 313 ps standard and 337 ps tuned?

ETA, standard is 350 bhp

Apparently the ECU had already been flashed but with quite a poor map. I suspect there are a few reasons for the low power output......Audi are known to be 'optimistic' sometimes with official power figures, it's an 8 year old engine, more than likely needs to be de-coked and possibly a more realistic dyno (one of the other guys there that day having work done said that the figures he got on the first power run of the day were lower than the previous dyno he had done, however he left with a huge grin after the MRC guys had worked their voodoo).

When I had my old M3 mapped the first power run produced 327bhp, compared to an official figure of 343bhp. The car had only done 40k and been immaculately cared for. Some cars appear to have higher real world outputs and some lower than official figures.

I thought it was a bit low too but it certainly feels quick enough for me. For now....... evil

Audi FSi engines are awful for coking up and strangling the power. Looking at the hundreds of B7 RS4's (same engine issues) MRC have de-coked and mapped I'd say get it de-coked and de-flapped (manifold flap) as soon as you can, you should make 40hp+ easily.
Exactly what MRC said to me and it's next on the list.

Nice!

Lucky to have a witness and footage to the crash otherwise it would have gone 50/50.

Is the map and exhaust on insurance? smile
Of course.....not daft enough to not declare. Usually mods don't affect my insurance....they just say that the expensive bits aren't covered. Hence when I hit the deer my M3 it hit the right side. .....protect the airbox was my slow motion thought.

Any fsi audi is prone to coking up, and according to der internetz the non turbo FSI's are particularly prone to it.

Catch cans etc dont work, as its the valve overlap which causes the carbon build up. normally CEL lights and slight misfires are the obvious giveaways of this.

I have a CALA engine code 3.2 v6 on 45000 miles and I will be taking a peak in there soon to see whats occurring..

Q. The non-resonated exhaust, is it an X, H, or dual pipe??
X, h or dual???? You've lost me there bud. No options given....ttrusted the mrc wizards. Cannot recommend the system enough though....just done 550 miles in it and when cruising on the motorway it's near silent......can be made to be very noisy on demand though. 😉

Quick bump...still awaiting repairs due to insurance companies dragging their heels... got this in an email today from my insurance company....can scarcely believe that the guy is still saying this was my fault. I will post the footage but only after the matter is settled.
"They have noted that liability is disputed as the circumstances they hold is that both vehicles collided when the lanes merged?? Not sure where they got that from but I am confident that when they view the footage they will take ownership of the claim straight away."

Nice car but why the antisocial exhaust, even the standard one on those things are too loud, my neighbours standard s5 woke me every morning the whole time he had the damn thing. He has a diesel q5 now, never woken me or the wee one once ever.
I imagine your neighbour's wasn't standard.

Factory exhaust is really very refined and muted. It's scarcely any louder than the 3.0 diesel. I have both parked <5m from me now so feel quite qualified to comment wink

This is exactly why so many end up with an aftermarket system whilst at a glance the most popular alternatives are cosmetically identical to standard.
I like car noises. I was a bit disappointed with how muted the standard exhaust is. I don't have a normal job which requires me to go to work every morning and most of the houses around me are holiday homes so very rarely anybody in them. The milltek is non-resonated so it does make a fair bit of noise but you can drive around it and make as much or as little noise as you like. It's not full on blasting all the time.
