Mondeo Ecosport 240 Estate
Discussion
Recently changed jobs and the new place has a much better company car scheme, meaning I could opt out with no restrictions on car choice and still have a fuel card. So naturally I ruled out anything diesel, anything under 200bhp and anything boring. I needed a huge estate for a family wagon, fast and fun when its just me and something not to flash to arrive at business meetings in. I think this ticks all the boxes.
So here it is, mk4.5 Mondeo Estate, 240PS with a "DSG" style box but this utilises a wet clutch for smoother changes. Official figures are 7 to 60 and 153mph, however in reality its deceptively quick once rolling. These cars are ultra rare as most are the 200bhp diesel, so I was lucky to find one local for the right price.
I've only covered 500 mile in it so far but I'm very impressed. When pottering its ultra smooth and quiet, which is ideal for the family, the ride is also more compliant than my previous car which was a Mazda 6. When I'm on my own and flick into sport mode, it changes into a rapid estate. For the money, I can't think of much else that ticks so many boxes. Skoda Octavia VRS was my other option but they're ten a penny and the interiors aren't particularly nice imo, also a bit small.
Few pics, no decent ones yet really.

Problem with the 2.5T is because its in the older car, you end up with an interior which is a bit tacky imo. Facelift interior is a much nicer place to be. Autobox is marmite though I agree, either love it or hate it. I find it extremely quiet and refined when pottering about, you don't even notice it shuffling gears around. On a hoon it obviously lacks involvement though, think it would benefit from paddles, strange Ford didn't include them.
On my first tank I averaged 22mpg, but obviously had a lead foot. 2nd tank is showing 30mpg with mostly short journeys. On a run I reckon it'll do mid 30s which I think is pretty good for a big bus.

Didn't realise it was just quite that rare! Makes me feel a bit better about paying full asking price now. I actually bought this in the dark, after a 5 minute test drive, doing all the things you don't do when buying a car. But I just had a feeling about this and I've not been disappointed.
Quick snap from a clean. No interior shots yet but its half leather, half alcantara with red stitching around the outside of the seats, red stitched steering wheel and some carbon fibre trim. Heated/cooled seats, puddle lights, convers+, climate, cruise etc etc.

That is nice. I'm looking at an smax with the 2.0 petrol turbo at some point. I assume it's the same drive train?
Yes, I also looked into the S Max version but prices were always higher, seemed to be a lot more knocking about though. Identical gearbox and engine, just in a bigger shell. S Max comes with much more compliant suspension though, not that I find the Mondeo harsh. If anything, the rides much more compliant than my old Mazda 6. If you need a fast 7 seater there's the S Max or Zafira VXR and imo, the S Max is another league to the Zafira. This is indeed a Titanium X, it says so on the boot :P Titanium X Sport to be precise, which means it has 240bhp rather than 200bhp. Dunno why Ford made it so confusing with this model, should have just called it the Mondeo ST like they did with previous generations, after all I believe this is the fastest production Mondeo ever made. Even the latest generation version comes with the identical powerplant, but in a heavier car so is slightly slower. Sure I read somewhere that Ford are releasing a V6 version though with 300bhp.
So this has now gone, been PX'd in for a Focus ST. Mrs z has a 7 seater now which meant I could get into something a bit smaller and more fun.
