Hi all,

Thought I'd introduce my Cayman R that I picked up at the end of August. It was really well prepared by SP Autobahn in Stirling and these are the photos they took:

As you can see it's a pretty decent spec; Boxster Spyder wheels, carbon buckets, Sports Chrono and PSE. Happy days!

The day I picked it up was typically Scottish, it was a very rainy drive up to Aberdeen so I took it pretty easy:

I've had a few RWD cars in the past (Z4 Coupe, Mk1 MX5 and Caterham Seven) but not experienced anything mid-engined so it's a bit of a learning curve!

Since getting it back home (to the garage that suddenly seems a lot smaller than when the Caterham was in it!) I've had a few blasts around Aberdeenshire including a lovely drive over the Old Military Road with an obligatory photo stop at the Cairn O'Mount viewpoint:

I've also managed to combine my hobbies (part of the man-maths in the trade up from the Seven) and stuck the bikes on the roof - drew quite a few looks in the car park at the Nevis range but it was a great drive over there via Pitlochry:

No real plans for any upgrades, just lots of super unleaded and probably some winter tyres so that I can keep it going through the colder months and perhaps bung the snowboards on the roof for some adventures out to The Lecht, Glenshee and Cairngorm once the snow comes in :-).

Lovely looking car and dare I say more individual looking than the latest Cayman. Sometimes when I see photos of mk2 cayman and 991 from the side/rear I think at first they look so similar.
Cheers! I'm a big fan of the way this one looks despite the colour being a bit marmite, I think it's the spoiler and the black wheels.

I do really like the GT4 (and the GTS for that matter) but the budget was pretty stretched already so it'll be a few years before those are on the cards!

One of my favourite cars, in the best colour!
Thanks!

Looks good that, bet that would be mighty fun on the Scottish roads! Only thing I'm not a fan of is the door handles, but I guess, it's an R, #racecar

How is it going round bends with the bikes on top? Additional flex?
Yep, the door handles are a bit of a gimmick (and confusing to first time passengers!) but it's kinda fun.

It's pretty decent actually, the bars are Thule and mounted very solidly but I do take it a bit easier than normal with the bikes up there. Nice and easy to load them too given how close to the ground the car is!

Thanks all, glad that the colour is getting some love - definitely makes it easier to find in car parks!

Holy Santa Claus st! One of my favourite cars in the perfect spec and with cool mountain bikes on the roof. All boxes ticked.
Haha, what a phrase! Yep, it's a pretty good toy all round!

Surprised by the positive response! The other I was looking at from Aberdeen OPC was grey, definitely prefer this one!

Yours looks good on the silver wheels. Think I'll do similar if mine are ever in need of a refurb!

How do you find the titanium exhaust? I like the PSE on mine but sometimes feel like it could use a touch more noise so am considering a Carnewal one...

Stunning! A man after my own heart. Car looks beautiful and extra points for mtb on the roof.

Can I ask what camera was used for the initial shots?
Cheers Tom! I'm not sure on the model but it was a Nikon dSLR for the first shots.

Probably the best colour choice - and what amazing seats!
I have always overlooked the Cayman R but over time they seem to have got more appealing - I guess the rise in popularity with the likes of the GT4 should keep values strong as well, particularly now the current gen has the 4 cylinder engine.
I am not sure I can justify probably 3 times the cost over my 2006 S though...or can I....maybe?!
Oh god they are nice!!!
Haha, that was pretty much the thought process I went through! Test drove a 981 Cayman and a 987.2 Cayman S but in the end figured that the extra initial cost for the R was offset by the 'specialness' of the car and potentially (fingers crossed) lower cost of ownership if the values hold. A the end of the day though who cares when it's so damn fun to drive!

First bit of annoyance with the car this week - had been parked up since Sunday and refused to start on Tuesday (flashing lights, clicking and, bizarrely wound it's windows down). Of course it was parked nose-in to the garage and there's very little space to work on it!

New Bosch S5010 battery ordered and delivered the next day from Car Batteries Online (would definitely recommend this lot):

Looks like it was probably the original Moll battery so that might explain the reluctance to start.

Much better with the new unit in place and very glad that I've not got a Porsche warranty as the total cost was £98 instead of around £260!

One top tip for anyone changing the battery on a 987 Cayman or Boxster - you'll need the key in the ignition and turned one click before you disconnect the negative terminal on the battery or it will do it's very best to deafen you with the alarm! I found this out the hard way... Other than that it's a simple DIY job.

Winter wheels next... I've found a set of 911 wheels on Gumtree locally but am a bit unsure about running a 295/35 R18 profile on the rear. Any thoughts?

No, no warranty on this one. The Cayman R had the DFI version of the 3.4l engine so most issues were sorted and hopefully keeping it properly looked after will stave off any big bills! Fingers crossed!

I'm still exploring myself to be honest but always enjoy the Old Military Road from Banchory to Fettercain (the Cairn O'Mount photo above was taken there. I also hear good things about the B993 from Inverurie to Whiterashes by am yet to check it out.

Bit of an update, had a wobble with the gear linkage getting a bit seized up while I was away on holiday for a couple of weeks. Managed to cure it with a bit of brute force and ignorance followed by a decent drive out. Suspect that it'll need looked at and lubricating soon but thankfully it's all fine for now!

Had a great drive out at the weekend to the bike trails on the Glenlivet Estate - including a bit of a rally stage up to the centre because I was bursting for a pee!

Getting lots of likes on Instagram for this one!

Little update - car is still performing well! Was in for a brake fluid change at Aberdeen OPC earlier in the month who thankfully washed it!

Also picked up a new mountain bike (Trek Remedy 9 RSL) so it now matches my seatbelts - simple things!

Apologies for the photo quality, the iPhone camera didn't enjoy a pitch dark forest car park!

Did you realise that your set up made it onto Pinkbike? https://www.pinkbike.com/news/nofuss-macavalanche-...
Yep, quite pleased about that!

Car is still running well - have had to replace a couple of sections of tubing in the A/C system which was pricey but necessary for the last couple of weeks!

Picked up a couple of scrapes on the front end so considering a respray there but otherwise will just be tooling around - over to Fort William again in a couple of weekends with the bikes, hoping there won't be too much tourist traffic around!

Also, for posterity - this is the set-up for the Thule roof-bars:

2 x Footpack 753
2 x Footpack 751
Fitting kit 3100
Suitable aero roof bars

Do like the yellow calipers! I agree that it's a pretty great blend of all the aspects required for a good sports car.

No plans to move mine on (although I do have a lot of other automotive itches to scratch) until small people are on the cards...

The exhaust is an odd one - some days I think it would be better to be a bit louder but other days (with the windows down) it does the trick! Would appreciate a few more pops and burbles sometimes but generally I love it.

What else is on your list?
I was fortunate that mine was a 3rd car and so wanted something a little more raw. Ended up in a Alfa 4C and haven't stopped smiling yet!
Good question! I've not had a V8 in my life yet so was considering a V8 Vantage but would like to be able to keep the ability to carry the bikes! That leads me down the route of possibly a Carrera T (had one on loan for a couple of days and really liked it) but they're a bit of a stretch financially.

I did have a sit in an Alfa 4C earlier in the year but having come out of a Caterham I'm not really looking to go to anything more hardcore... I'm sure it's great fun though and they do look awesome!

Guessing I'll keep the Cayman until I need more seats and then look at either an RS4 (B8) or a Golf R Estate for practical, fast fun!
