Disclaimer: Will not sell for gold

Is there some thing I can put in the tags to rotate the images without uploading again?

This mighty car from the era of "oh fk no" in Mercedes history popped up in the bargain basement thread at like 2-3am. By half 4 and with far to much beer in me I was the winning bidder, I had won the next morning. Being the idiot I am when drunk I had no real way to collect it before Christmas as it was the 20/21st when I won. There were no flights or trains down which would work around my work and cost (£200 flights no thank you).

As excited as a kid over Christmas I had to do detective work from home. Found its Vin by using its numberplate to enquire about a service with mercedes themselves on their website. Then used this to find its options list using one of many easy to find pages.

That brings us up to today where first collection/check its not a shed has been made. So the £750 S class has made its first trip. 40 miles or so to Birmingham. Havent seen it yet myself so just have my Uncles short experience with it. £20 of petrol put in and 38 mpg apparantly, barely moved the guage.

The seller warned me that the car is untaxed/uninsured so he wasnt driving it anymore so it might go flat. It did. Started easily with a jump but it brought an array of warnings onto the dash. All but the SRS went out which he said wasnt there before, seemed honest enough over the phone and even offered to give me a obd2 cable and try find some software online for me. Not fussed though as ive seen what a low battery will do to a L322 Range Rover dash even while running.

As stated in the ad it has a numberplate and a side light out, scratched front bumper and minor kerbing. Wee knock from the steering sometimes, assumed to be the same balljoint mentioned in the old Mot, not too worried for the drive home. Passenger mirror doesnt adjust, again no idea till I see it but doesnt matter.

Only slightly annoying this is the fact that the headlights both went out on the drive home for 1 second at a time twice in 50 minutes, came straight back on though so assuming a loose connection somewhere. Maybe they are auto headlights and the sensor is toast.

Should be collecting next week smile

You might be lucky and a few turns from lock to lock will extinguish the SRS light.
I have access to a garages fault reader so even if it's not I can reset/know what's wrong quickly.

I agree it's a stupid amount of car for £750. Recently sold a leggy tired pug 307 (I think, was a 01) for £700 so compared to that it looks even better deal.

On the first leg of multiple trains to collect this shed. Looking forward to the drive home rather than sitting on another train I can tell you.

Expect updates tomorrow of me broken down at the side of the road haha.

That's all you need. It'll be nice and cosy in the recovery trucks cabin from Leicester onwards anyway. hehe
Spent enough time in those cabins frown IfI make it to the A9 and snow causes problems my Mum with a Range Rover on winters will be the recovery vehicle tongue out

Good luck with it biggrin
Gonna get on the road early to be in Dundee for 2pm for the 3pm game between United and Liverpool. Hopefully providing the car works! This will mean no pictures till after, won't be home till Monday for real updates.

Best I can do you for now.

He has indeed.

Car didn't let me down. Lots of wee problems though but pretty happy. Seems to look rust free too which is nice.

Cruise control won't work above 60 which is odd.
Play in steering, mentioned on last mot so assume same bit?
Vibration when braking - linked to above as new front discs recently?
Every 3 seconds or so there's a very slight vibration from the rear for half a second, maybe a prop bearing? Wasn't really that bad.
Left wiper blade doesn't clear anything.

Might have got a speeding ticket too which is annoying, camera saw me at maybe 81/2 but I don't know how much this car overreads by.

Averaged 80ish mph over the trip with 25mpg. This a picture from mid trip.

These cars arent thaaat bad. I know this one will now blow up as I have said that however. My Mums boyfriends Dad drives a £2k S430 which is also a 2000 car. Other than a bulb going in the dash it has been reliable for him.

Finally home so here is some quick pictures (not cleaned) of the car.

30mpg is possible too. Was mostly on the A9 so limited to 60.

Having had a wee look it seems the tyres are missmatching which could be the cause of my cruise problems. As someone mentioned the tyre size matters on these. Its running 225/45 up front and 245/45 at the rear which doesnt sound like alot but once you account for the fact it also gives it a larger sidewall it could be the cause of the problem. No mention in the handbook of it ever having 225/45 tyres on the front either. They are both in need of replacement so will go back to the 245/45 size.

Heated and cooled seat works so well. Never thought that cooled would be so nice but when sat for 3+ hours it is nice to cool down if I left the heated seat on too long haha. All the adjustment works too so thats good.

Not quite as much legroom in the rear as I would of thought.

This and a slight scuff on the bumper/arch are the only obvious damage too.

Its a really nice place to sit really, I do however need to sort some type of aux/usb input as I cant stand not having my own music.

What was the autobox like?
Smooth, no knocks or jolts. When slid into gear its ready to go straight away, the downshift/upshift works well too. Was mostly on the motorway so it didnt have alot of changing to do however haha.

What's happening with the S class? Any updates?
Not alot if im honest. It just works so not *had* to do anything. Bar the multifunction steering wheel playing up sometimes it has been fine.

However I am not enjoying it much. Unless I am doing a longer trip I always find myself taking the 330i touring out as its just more fun, only reason I dont like it as much for long distance is its on rock solid coilovers and has a rather noisy exhaust which drones. It also isnt very practical compared to the touring.

Dont know how much longer it has left to live at my house. I just dont use it enough, think if they made a S430 estate I would use it alot more.

Thanks for the update.
I asked because I have an s500L that is my daily. I think it is a great car and much maligned by people who have never driven one.
I didn't realise that your car had the coil over conversion. You obviously did not fit it but I really cannot see the point of fitting rock hard coil overs to the s class and the cl, they must ruin the ride and does it really work out any cheaper than having the original airmatic or ABC systems repaired? Same for the exhaust, I know we all want to hear the V8 but it really does not suit the car if its overly loud.
Glad to hear that otherwise, you have not had too many problems. Good luck with your other projects.
Sorry I meant the E46 330i is the modified one. The S class is on air and has a stock exhaust tongue out

So its time to update this. Car sat since the mot expired due to leaving my job, a house move which never happened and then getting a new job which took up all my time. Job pays alot more than the last so thats a big plus.

Battery is dead. Was already dodgy before it sat for a few months but its too dead now. Bought a new one and fitted it. Now my dash wont light up, common fault on these models but seems odd as when parked up it worked fine.

2 new front tyres in the correct size to be ordered up in the coming days (will get fitted just before mot) which should fix the cruise issue. Going to have to investigate the clunk in the steering as well.

Had a pretty good look over it and figure im going to try a give it a good polish up as the paint doesnt look great despite it seeming undamaged bar the scruffed corner.

So ripped the instrument cluster and steering wheel out. Cluster to be sent away to be fixed.

Needed to remove the wheel to fit a new clockspring/steering angle sensor thing. The horn and multifunction wheel both stopped working/never worked - can't remember, this is the cause of this fault, this may also sort the srs light out too.

Was all a pretty easy job really. Also removed the door card off the rear as the window wouldn't go up and down. Only remembered once i had got this far that i had the battery out so couldn't see what was wrong.

Put it on the ramp and had a poke about, seems tidy enough with minimal rust below. Does seem to have a tiny amount of play in the steering rack though.
