After using the S2000, and the Clio cup over the years I decided to get a more dedicated trackcar, Now with 1 kid, one on the the way and all that expensive (and the wife soon giving up work for 9 months) My budget was limited. So a friend (same situation, but with twins on the way) decided to come in. A third was thinking about it but his triplets soon ended that game!.

It will be track only, SORN, and we can borrow a trailer for free!

So, initially we set a limit of £2K all in.

Costs so far:
£500 - J plate, 107K 325 Saloon (what we wanted) e36.
Got this last year, left it for 6 months (started first time!!)
£300 - Set of 17" BBS refurbed split-rims with good tyres and tread.

What we have done so far:
Stripped the inside, loads up (suspension gone up 2")! The doors are now just empty shells (no glass etc)
Sprayed in matt black with rattle cans smile Going to stick some stickers on it.

Went to redish motorsport in bristol and spoke to James, who is brilliant, very very helpful and offers full support for even chepo projects. Showed me how to replace bits correctly and just gave loads of pointed and answered daft questions...

First odd thing. What is this.. not seen this before?

Under the back seat it was sat in a load of oil!!, however the tar sound deadening just scraped away easy.

Car ready for being attacked byt two clowns and some spray cans:

First black coat down:

Just need to be buffed a bit etc..

So.. the shopping list..(just waiting for this to arrive at the moment)

Gaz coilovers with 5" springs, and the correct weight for the cars weight (with lots removed)
Powerflex front/rear bushes
Ferodo ds2500 front pads
Rose jointed front mounts
Rose jointed rear mounts

All from redish.

Blagged.. Full set of uprated Grooved Disks.

Total cost so far £2K.
Stuff we still need to get
Seats/Wheel/Plastic for the windows

Cheers..

Small bottle is for the intensive wash concentrate, as your car has headlight washers. For a track car just junk the larger washer bottle and swap the plug into the pump on the smaller bottle.
Cheers sniff.. we wondered what it was..

Looks like a great project.. any plans for the engine such as breathing mods or an engine transplant?
Not at the moment, just want to get a working car.. They other guy is new to this game, so I want him to start learning about speed thru corner and handling, not just massing his foot to the floor and then smashing the brakes on etc.. For us at this moment, its not about straight line speed, anyone can do that.. Its about learning to maintain speed with balance thru the bends.

Ok.. quick update.

Its been a while.. (my son was born 4 weeks ago) but we are almost done.

So.. Coilovers + solid top mounts on, Strut brace on, Bushes done, Buckets in, and harness mount points welded in place, poly windows (almost all in), and Fedodo DS2500 pads.

BBS alloys on.

Left to do.. Finish tidying out the inside, put in some kick plates, spray a few bits and paint the car.

Its getting all the geo setup today, and the guys at the tyre place have been saving me (for free) some older tyres including 2 R888's part worn, which is a result.

Total cost.. just over 2K for everything.

So.. a couple of pics:

First off just the MSE track days.. (as the guy that went half) has not done a track day before.. We are lucky that we like 5 mins from Castle Combe, and 10-30 mins from all the track days around here.. Then we will go further a field.

Hopefully the ring next year.

But so far for 2K its a bargain smile

And the first replacement part. The lower offside wishbone was slightly twisted, so of to eurocar parts.

Much better now.

They also put on some part worn r888's they have put a side for me + 4 other tyres!

Just an update..
The car has been plowing around for a few years now, not using as much as I would like.

Anyways, it been behaving a bit odd, wanting to drift around corners a bit to easily. I assumed this was down to my crap driving/incorrect setup of the suspension/and dead semi slicks. It was not.. it was the diff.

So that was an excuse to purchase a LSD: Fitted.

Also you can see the new tyres FZ-201's on the BBS's (the 'wets' are on it at the moment).

Apart from a new set of pads (on the rear, £10 wheel bearing, £30 to replace a dead brake pipe + £50 bigger radiator) is costs nothing really to run, however I have just put a MOT on it, as Castle Combe and 4 airfields are closer than the round trip I need to get my trailer. (CC is 10 mins away).

One thing that I found out, is that as it is a 92, is doesn't need the CAT or Airbags(they are not in it).

Total so far is prob just over £3K + a 400 trailer.
These cars are great, cheap to run, fire up after being left for ages in the garage.

LSD is and easy swap..
Read anti roll bar off.
6 Torx bolts on each axle (connecting to the diff)
4 on the prop

3 more bolts and it pulls out.

Takes about 2 hours on a lift.

Saloon, easier to replace the windows with plastic (coupe the doors are frameless)

Thanks Joe, is that for fitting a sport LSD?

I thought the M3 diff was more complex and you couldn't simply swap one diff for another?
I was off a 328, so straight on.. if its not i.e its off a 3.0 m3 (you need a medium case sized diff) which the 325/328/3.0 m3 is. The 3.2 will require the whole backend change as the diff is a 'large case'.

Anyways.. all you do is pop off the propshaft connector [held in with one nut], and put the one from the 328/325 on.. just being careful not to over tighten it.

5 years on, car still flying along quite happy..

Recent changes, new exhaust system, M3 front bumper..
Car now is in bits and being sanded back, I have purchased a spray gun and lots of kawasaki green paint so its going bright green and black (roof).

Needs new disk/pads on the rear, and have a set of e46 disks/calipers still to go on.

I also just got this (car is getting fast on Castle Combe now, with limited run off), and a new set of full poly windows.
