Tilly the Landrover

Last week I took the plunge and finally got the Landie I always wanted .

This is Tilly (as I was informed they all have to have a name )







In traditional Land Rover fashion she broke on the way home but sounds like it's only a halfshaft so will get 'er going again tomorrow and as she is the beginning of a project I don't mind too much

I know, I intend to alter the interior a bit (stereo, storage, CB etc) and a swap to a 200TDi lump. The exterior however I want to leave fairly standard (a few work lamps for camping will be needed though)

The SOTW is what reminded me to post the old girl up , paid a bit over SOTW money though (£1200 with 12months MOT ).

I may well do. At least they match front and rear I'm tempted to do the front two Limestone to match the rears though

I've spent the afternoon getting the old girl going again (broke a halfshaft on the way home last week ). Ended up having to take the diff off to get at the 2in of metal left behind . Took her for a test run to my local and the throttle linkage decided to give up resulting in another tow home .

The annoying thing is despite a 100% failure rate I'm still glad I got her, bloody old Landrovers

The halfshafts go fairly regularly - no need to tow home, just put the transfer box into 4WD (push the yellow knob) and you have a front wheel drive Landy. Nasty to drive - worst torque steer I have experienced since a Montego Turbo in the 80's - but gets you home.

Aye but I was 60miles from home and it was getting late so I wussed out (first time out in a Series).

I'd suggest that you replace the one that didn't break with a new one, before it goes. Such an easy job when the shaft is in one piece!
You will also get used to doing hub seals from time to time I expect

Great thing is that Landy spares are cheap - I replaced the back exhaust box on my SWB today - £27 for the new one, including vat and the gasket!

Luckily mine is for camping / a toy so I don't have to drive it (though my daily has a bodyshop trip due shortly so I'm saving up for fuel / hoping its all good that week ). I have a new one for the other side (got both as I wasn't 100% sure which had gone) but it looked okay so its gone back in. Not a bad idea though, I spent all afternoon at getting that last bit out )

Well now I have owned her nearly a month, she is thirsty (11-14mpg :O), noisy, slow and as leaks into the cab when it rains

and my review of the old girl 200miles in? Loving it to bits . Had her out camping and it took all the gear required and slept in the back, ordered some new bits for her and she even spent the day as a mobile billboard while out with the Cadets. Will have some more pics shortly

Hello Landie fans. I have neglected to keep this page up to date. Since I last posted here Tilly has undergone a major overhaul.

02 September

Arrives at the workshop

14 September
Took her in on the 13th and arrived the next day to find this.

Sprayed because thats how it would of been originally.

How many vehicles can you strip like this?




Where we found the replacement chassis was money well spent

Then I lost the camera lead so these are between 18th Sept and 11th Nov.

All axles and engine fitted









10th December


Today - She was started for the first time and taken up the road for a little test . Need to finish the electrics and some other little issues but after a long wait I should have my baby back for Christmas

Yep she now has a 200TDi out of an old Disco I purchased for the job. Standard gearbox, axles and diffs though (Diffs may be changed at a later date depending on how I get on with her).

Finally had the old girl back this week . And as with anything there are teething troubles. Looks like the secondhand turbo I purchased needs replacing

Had her out for a run to the pub earlier. On the way home she decided to spring a leak from the heater and piss coolant everywhere . Oh well I can bypass that, who needs a heater this time of the year?

A new year update. The few teething troubles have been attended too (apart from needing a new heater for the cab as the old one has burst due to "something in the cab hitting it".

Performance is improved massively and from a quick mpg calculation (done on town driving and country lanes) she is running at 25.7mpg. which compared to the 12ish mpg before is fantastic

Gotta put some miles on her to bed things in then she is going back to the workshop for a general check to make sure it's all still tight and leakproof (as leakproof as 44yo Landies get ).

Well the old girl has been running around for a few months now and continues to do the job

My mate John regrets putting a 'Hitch Landrover Here' sticker on the back of his Shogun after this...


...Dead battery meant it needed a pull out so we could get to jumpstart it (the Berlingo was flat too!), at least I knew where to attach the rope

Been busy as an advert for the Cadets at a show the other week (complete with flag )



Tempting me into buying a Sankey after borrowing one for some trailer practice



and finally at home relaxing and running security for the other old girl...


MOT on Tuesday so off for her checks tomorrow, shouldn't be a problem

I understand completely, I've spent a small fortune on Tilly but I deliberately didn't make her shiny as although she won't be seriously offroading I bought her as a tool and in my case that includes muddy fields and towing/ dragging things, how many others cars can. I cannot think of another vehicle quite so versatile

They were primered before I bought it (two old green ones were there but rusty). I keep toying with the idea of painting them but I quite like the tatty look, less likely to get pinched.
