We are buying a 996 Twin Turbo convertible in the next couple of weeks, the ones we are looking at are aged around 2004 models.

What are current/previous owners thoughts on manual versus tipronic models?
At 50k miles are there likely to be any issues with a tiptronic?

Wont be using it on track, will be mainly town/city driving with the occassional trip to Europe.

I've always preferred manuals, does a 996TT manual feel more fun to drive than the tipronic? I dont want to lose the fun of taking it for a good blast, does the auto feel less fun?

Hoping to get one with the x50 power upgrade although not essential.

Thanks for the info.

Not too worried about over revving it, only a clumsy lead footed-muppet would do that.

Currently driving a Boxter S with the Tiptronic and its a horrible gearbox, not sporty in the slightest. Is that gearbox similar to the one in the 996 tt?

So, the manual MAY do 0-60 in half a second less (with an expert driver having several attempts if they fluff the gear-change on one of them), but today, I got home about 3 minutes earlier than if I had the same car with a manual box thumbup
Do you really think that?
I suggest you invest in some driving lessons if you think you got home 3 minutes earlier due to driving an auto.

How very clever of you to deliberately quote one line of my post out of context.... rolleyes

So, let me get this right... YOU start a thread asking for people's opinions, then take the piss out of the people, who give up a few moments of their time and the benefit of their directly relevant experience, trying to help you - smart move mate...
Sorry KVA was only poking fun at you, thanks for your and all the comments so far its has been really interesting hearing from people who have experience of driving them both.

So far have only driven a 'tip but that along with the comments so far has helped confirm what we had already half decided - ie to go for a manual got a couple to view this week.

Once again thanks for the info from previous owners/drivers of these superb cars.

The manual is the one we have gone for, tiptronic probably more practical based on how its going to be used most of the time, BUT, for those occassional proper blasts the manual wins it for us.

Felt the Tip' limits the fun when driving hard and the way it changes is too similar to the current Boxster S have been using which I dont like, its just not a proper sports car feel (but clearly very good if thats what you want).

Will put a pic up once its back home.
