Hello fellow P'headers and thank you all for being such a fantastic and often funny source of info and entertainment for the past few years. Yes I have been a 'lurker' and studied loads of great info on here about the cars we love and enjoy.

Last week I realised a dream and privately purchased a beautiful midnight blue metalic 1995 993 manual coupe with 100k miles and FSH. Photos to follow!

The car covered the 450 miles journey home perfectly and I cannot tell you how happy I was.....UNTIL the next day when I experienced problems starting it! My happiness has traded places with anxiety and mild panic!

When I turned the key the car completely ' died ' and I thought, '' OH ***T!!''
I tried again and this time it nearly started but I got a ' locking up / siezing type sound from the back of the car. It eventually started and it has a misfire.

Long story shortened - it got towed to my indy where the starter motor along with dizzy caps / rotor arms and fan belt got changed and injectors were cleaned.

Got the car back on Friday and it started. Next day the exact same symptoms re appear and its very reluctant to start however once its warm it starts easily - leave it off for 20 mins and it doesn't want to start. Still misfiring plus when I parked it the oil pressure warning light flashed 3 times!! The dipstick is showing an overfill of oil by about half an inch.

The car is going back to the indys tomorrow however have any of you good people experienced anything similar with your 993s?

Thank you kindly.

Thanks for the response!

No I have put off contacting the seller however I am getting more worried now and I'm thinking of contacting the chap to see if he can shed any light on this. Yes the car was indeed warm when I met him although it was turned off for an hour or so as we chatted an it started fine at the time. He had a friend put oil in it and I'm wondering if an oil overfill could contribute to this.

Yes photos to follow!

Yes the oil was checked correctly and also the battery was fine ( although it eventually lost some power when trying to start it. It's fully charged now )

Thank you Pope I'll look into that one.

I just wana drive this thing!

No its not that one..

The day I collected the car I travelled 500 miles by train ( should've been 450 miles - don't ask! ) then travelled 50 miles back again..then drove the thing 450 miles home!! I left the house at 7am and returned at 4am next day.

Quite a trek but I really wanted this car. Hope I made the right decision.

Oh right that's interesting. I've read about alarm / immob issues.

I mentioned the DME relay to the indy who said he didn't think so however since the problem persists I think I'll mention it again.

I've been a Porsche fan since boyhood and buying a 993 in many ways has been fantastic. I love these cars - I just want to get it sorted so that I can relax and get on with enjoying the thing to the full.

Some good points there thanks.

I just contacted the seller who said that the car never had any these issues in the 8 years he owned it.

Yes these cars are AWESOME! I just love the way they feel..and the smell ..and the looks. Bags of character, and that air cooled flat six is supoib.

I loved my old Targa. I loved the 987S but this is a different animal. This is the one!

Hi all. A couple of photos as promised. I will post more once I've taken them.

You know this thread is the first time I've ever posted on any forum and I've got to say that I'm genuinely touched by the kind hearted people who've given thought to my situation and very kindly offered some advice. Many thanks to you all!! I'm now more knowledgeable on the subject and I hope to be able to offer some advice to others based on my ( limited compared to some of you guys ) Porsche experience.

My car is at the Indys and I'm hopeful that I'll have it back very soon as I'm already feeling withdrawal symptoms!!I'll update once I know what's what.

Wozy and Stutgart - cracking pics! I think the 993 is extremely photogenic and just looks right from any angle.

Cheers guys!

It's got a dark grey full leather interior with sports seats. I find them much comfier than my old 987S seats.

From a distance the colour almost appears black sometimes until you get nearer the car.

I'm looking forward to giving it a proper polish.

Thanks Jackal I'll keep that in mind when I speak to the Indy as it was a rather large bill for work that didn't resolve the issue at all.

I used your excellent buying guide when looking at 993s for sale. Thanks for that. The level of detail and quality of work that's went into your fantastic 993 is truly awesome. I've never seen anything quite like it.

HAHA!

Yeah the site's an ideal reference point.

I wish I had some of those technical skills!

Took me 5 mins of staring blankly at the engine bay before I finally spotted where the dipstick was!

I'm learning though..

Absolutely! I'm glad it's not just me that thinks that.

There's a twisty bit on the dipstick and at first I thought it had no oil on it - cue panic number 6 - then I pressed some kitchen roll against the dipstick and noted a slight oil overfill...the car was idling and fully up to temp (on a flat surface) at the time.

From memory my last air cooled pork had a dipstick inside where the oil goes.

Hi all.

Update ;

After some more research I discovered that my car is subject to a recall campaign for a new wiring loom and also a rubber thingy for the doors. It's with Porsche just now. They suspect that this may be causing the problem although they also said it could be a coil pack. The car is due to be inspected tomorrow morning to see if it qualifies for the recall work.

I wonder if they'd give me a nice courtesy car? Hmmmm.

This recall work shouldn't cost me anything however the OPC are charging £65 per hour labour on these cars which I think is quite good.

Cheers Goose.
Perhaps the 8 hour drive home in it cooked a few electrical items / connections.
I was aware of how hot my seatbelt had become upon returning from filing up!

Yeah hopefully - just wish I'd done this before spending quite a bit on new starter, dizzy caps / rotors and fan belt although I asked for the fan new belt as the old one appeared cracked in places.

PP -the rubber 'thingy' recall for the doors is a rubber gasket / stopper.

It's not confirmed yet but once I gave them the VIN number they said they would inspect the wiring loom to see if the part number matched those to be replaced.

The car's now to be inspected later today. I hope if it does get replaced then it doesn't affect anything else and show up some more 'gremlins'
