I love Porsche trivia. There are so many hidden features and facts about our beloved cars that I think its worth sharing them in a thread. Examples;

The 993 was meant to have a totally new dash but this was shelved very late in the design stages due to the cost. It is believed by some that it is this design that eventually saw the light of day in the first Boxster concept cars.

The 968 Sport was not an official Stuttgart model. Porsche UK ordered 306 Club Sports with some options and stuck the Sport badge on the back from a 928!

The 996 and 997 4WD models only measure fuel levels from half to full. Below this is done by an estimation via mileage and driving style.

So what do you know about your car that others may not?

Surely this can't be right.

Otherwise the gauge would only work on the way down.

If you were near empty and you filled up to less than half a tank, the gauge would not register as it would have no means of knowing that you had filled up, and by how much.
That happened to me.
It is a pretty poor design. But Porsche believed that this was a good solution! Things like this become character over time though!

The original plan was also to watercool the 993.

The 928 was meant to be released in 1972 or '73.

The steering rack of a 996 Carrera Cup is identical to one of a regular 996 with the exception of a couple of travel restrictors (big plastic washers).
A watercooled 993? How would they have done that? Just the heads like the GT1 engine?

What about the classic rumour that pulling the handbrake onto its first click in a 997 turbo makes it 2 wheel drive?

Can anybody confirm this finally?

Apologies for my awful pic but the dark blue Targa in this pic in the centre is the only factory Targa RS ever built. It was made for the wife of Roger Penske.
Mmmm, very poor. You need to get your ducks in a row! biggrin

confused
I believe that over 50% of the weight of the engine sits in front of the rear wheels. I cant remember the figure, but its something like 52%.

Therefore it is mid engined.

The 996 Carrera models have 2 high level brake lights. The second is underneath the spoiler as when it raises it hides the exterior one!

I cant remember where I read it but I am pretty sure it was actually from Porsche themselves and there was a discussion at the time on here about the definition of mid engined and it was confirmed that it was.

It was also confirmed that many front engined Ferraris like the 612 are now technically mid engjned as are many BMWs!

Can you say where you got this nugget from, the dash of the aircooled 911s is a structural part with the instrument holes as part of this structure isn't it ?
Sorry, I wish I could! I have read it from a couple of sources over the years, from books I think.

I believe it is relatively common knowledge in the Porsche world though.

I think people are inventing their own definitions!

I stated it was a merely interesting technicality. It would seem its quite controversial.

How a car (and driver) manages its weight transfer is the key to how they feel in this regard I think.

The Porsche logo/crest was designed in 1952 on Dr. Ferry Porsche's napkin as he sat opposite U.S. importer Max Hoffman in a New York restaurant.

The original Targa was designed in response to rumours that American laws were being drawn up to ban convertibles for safety reasons!

The laws never made it.

It was designer Peter Stevens, (of mclaren f1 fame) who like the side profile of the 928 so much that he copied it for the sierra XR4i
It's only the XR4i with the split rear quarter window that copies the 928 though.
He didnt copy it very well!
