New parents fun car
Discussion
Well it's nearly that time and I've had an offer on my 911 from a specialist which is pretty good.
Going to be a Dad in March (very excited) and we both need a car for commuting and cannot have 3 cars.
We have a Mk5 GTI and I am choosing between:
2014 Macan / 2011 Cayenne or Panamera (I think the last 2 are too big)
2009 E63 saloon / 2011 C63 wagon in F1 pace car trim :-)
2007 RS4 B7 or 2013 B8 Avant
Any M5 from E39 + (although the Mrs doesn't like the E39...)
Current no.1 is a 2009 E63 at Bristol Mercedes for £30k and would hope I could get 22k in 3 years time.
All the above are 4 door, will be used for commuting but depending on the contract, may only be 2 miles to the station. Long distance road trips to Denmark and France every year very likely.
Appreciate any thoughts and one of the main objectives is good resale in 3 years so I can buy another 911.
Cheers

Its not clear why do you think you need to change the Golf? Its plenty big enough for another 9lb person, even if the mother insists it needs 100kg of survival kit.

I'm guessing you mean that the 911 is sufficient as we have a Golf?SS7
If not, we currently have a golf and a 911.
Mrs would have the Golf for daily duties and I don't really want to turn up at work in a 911 or leave it at a train station :-(

Have you seen the size of a pram these days? I think my wife and I will need 3 cars for every journey, as a minimum.SS7
My parents had a Mk2 GTI 3 dr
My in-laws had a Fiat Panda
Why do I need such a big car :-(

Have you considered buying roofbox?
I've even used my 964 with a roof box fitted for european trips before with my wife and baby!
Bought the wrong 911 for a family - 997 cabriolet so no roof box and rear seats tilt forward due the roof mechanism.I've even used my 964 with a roof box fitted for european trips before with my wife and baby!
3rd car isn't an option also and currently driving 80 miles per day but that will change

A Golf is an ideal 2nd car for family. You can easily get all the baby kit including buggy in the boot.
If you're going to get another 911 in 3 years why not get it now.
If you need a station car get a banger.
I'd certainly suggest seeing how you get on with your Golf rather than changing because everyone else says you need a bigger car.
No space for a 3rd car and appreciate the Golf is big enough for my wife, but what do I use? If you're going to get another 911 in 3 years why not get it now.

If I keep the 911 it won't get to stay in the garage overnight if it's my daily, it might get left at the station or it might be subjected to 80 miles per day.
All of which I'd probably still prefer to a saloon/estate/SUV but not ideal

It doesn't really bother me much, as I don't really enjoy cooking hatchbacks (including GTIs) anymore than I would an estate or even an SUV. It's all utility motoring, so the thing may as well be comfortable and spacious.

I've always liked the look of 993's but I've tried 2 and I wouldn't be that excited to drive it on the weekends, by myself, with no family
A 997 GT3 would get taken out at 5am before I start the day :-)

I'd guess more like £15k I'm afraid.Edited by fastgerman on Tuesday 30th September 12:39
Slight change of plan....
Many thanks to all the comments :-)
It seems the Golf wasn't 'nice' enough for being the weekend family car and when we are going on Euro trips. So, I'll swap the Golf for an S4 Avant (2011) and keep the Porsche!
Lets see how long this lasts but I think I' could park the 911 at the station and keep it in the garage at nights.
Still no space for 3 cars though.
If the engine does have problems in the 997 then I could go to 3.9 and near 400 bhp, so maybe I'm looking forward to this happening (warranty expired 5 days ago and it's 2005)

I have updated my profile, my 997 is no longer for sale and PH advert expires tomorrow.
Have emailed Hartech asking what parts I should buy to prolong the life of my engine (warranty expired 1 week ago). Grant responded to say they're developing some new parts.
Cridfords Porsche offered me £24k for mine, which isn't bad and think I could have pushed for £25k as this was just an offer over the phone. Would cost me £45k to buy a 2009 Gen 2 S from Porsche Approved Used. Don't think the car is worth £20k more when the interior and just about every body panel is the same.
The MK5 GTI is deemed a bit boy racer for my wife to use so swapping this in for a B8 S4 Avant - £285 road tax, 30 ish mpg, lots of toys and cost is approx £20k. Good review from Chris Harris on this car. Looking forward to some long road trips across Europe in this.
Can't complain :-)
