Hello guys,

I just wanted to see who else, like me, earns a very average wage but owns a Porsche, or is aspiring to own one? I love reading these forums and appreciate all the posts! The Cayman GTS thread makes me turn green with envy! Hah but I really appreciate all the time you guys spend posting pictures and info on your cars. By average, I mean 30k or less a year? I make £25,750 at the moment, so not really Porsche money at all!

I currently drive a 2007 Mini Cooper S - my next car will definitely be a Porsche and I'm saving £350 a month now towards one. I turned 27 last month and plan to buy when I'm 30 (rest of the capital made up from selling my current car and a low interest bank loan). I originally wanted a 987 gen 1 Cayman - but now all that's in my head is a 981 Boxter - this one looks fantastic for £35000 as an OPC car!

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2014...

So I'm thinking around the Christmas time in 3 years, an OPC 2012 Boxter will be around mid to low 20ks and I'll be in a strong position to buy (£13,000 savings, £4-5000 part ex from my car and the remainder low interest bank loan). Does this sound like a normal plan to you? Basically, none of my friends think like this at all and I do feel like everyone will say I'm wasting my money on a Porsche.

I'm guessing there's some nutters on here with a very normal wage (up to low 30k -but the lower the better!) and I'd love to hear your stories of how you saved for your cars, or took out a big loan, or anything really! Is there anything you regret?

Thanks!

P.S - I've read till my eyes have bled over IMS and RMS failures in Gen 1 Caymans and Boxters, 996s and 997s! I think that's what's put the 981 Boxter in my mind to stop worrying - I'm a natural worrier!

Thanks for the talk!

Wozy - what Porsche did you buy? Honestly, I've thought so much about depreciation etc, that was why I originally wanted a gen 1 Cayman! I'd love a 997 gen 1 on the Hartech scheme but that gets my head spinning again on the risk, maintenance and warranty side of things! It's very likely that I won't end up with a 981 Boxter, but it will definitely be a Porsche for around 20k - I guess just the one I feel is best value and isn't going to blow up!

Hah I know what you mean about the planning and actually ending up doing nothing, but I have a lot of time to plan as I need 3 years to save! I am good when I have an idea like this, I save and follow it through - I saved £8000 in a year for my Cooper S! I have more commitments now though, so I can't save as quickly.

Thanks for the replies guys - all of the advice given is good and I can see why each suggestion makes sense to different people! Over the past few months, I've probably considered pretty much everyone option that's been mentioned!

My thought pattern has been something like this - I originally thought it would definitely be a 987 gen 1 Cayman, then I moved to a 987 Boxter because they were cheaper, then I thought I may as well pay a bit more and get a Cayman because that's what I really want, then I thought for a bit more I could get a 997 and so on! From then, I've gone back to each model a 1000 times.

I do really like 986 Boxters, I just don't think I want one because it's a bit of a step backwards in terms of interior from Cooper Si. I know the R56 Mini's have a bad reputation for their interior but my car has the lounge leather and sat nav and the interior is brilliant! I do have a long term girlfriend and to appease her, it needs to be a nice-ish place to be - so I think 987 is as old as i'll go.

I take the points that I coulld pretty much sell the Mini and get a Boxter now - I've been a car nut my whole life but a late bloomer driving, so the Mini Cooper S is actually my first car. So I'm wanting to have more driving experience before I get into the Porsche.

Thanks for all the replies fellas, it's made my brain spin even faster considering all of my options! Today, it's 987 Boxter.

Hey guys!

I was just thinking about this thread and did a search for it; it was great to read all the replies! Crazy I posted this 14 months ago!

Just updating to let you know where I'm at - the Porsche saving has gone as planned but what a few of you guys foresaw happening, has happened! It looks like I'll be buying a house with my girlfriend in the next 6 months.

Now, it's not all bad news, I wasn't totally naive and I've also been putting money away for a house as well (for about 3 years), but really, I feel now I need to put the use both the Porsche savings money and house savings money for said house (that's the sensible thing, right!?). Combined I have 17k saved (which for me is mind blowingly amazing) but yeah, soon it will all be gone on a house!

However there is some good news! My girlfriend is supportive of me buying a Porsche and she says I'm 'allowed' to buy one when I'm 30! However - I fear 30 might have to become 31 realistically.

New plan for the Porsche ...

4-5k from the Cooper S (it's an automatic, that's why the price estimate is a little higher)
2k from selling 2 guitars (hah if you don't like guitars you're probably thinking wtf! hah the right guitars hold their prices like 993s)
6k from new Porsche savings
rest of cash low interest bank loan (I know, I know, hopefully not too big though)

So yeah, just thought I’d update to let you know whilst there's been a derailment of the dream (it’s not a dream, it’s a plan!) it’s still in motion and I haven’t given up! Hah, also as I read through this thread I realised I spelt Boxster wrong every time! In the 14 months I’ve learnt how to spell Boxster correctly. Also my wages have gone up a bit making the dream a bit more manageable, a few quid off 28k now! It's still a 981 of some sort that I ideally want, but if they are still just too expensive and unrealistic, it's a 987.2 Cayman (987.2 Caymans are holding their prices so well though, hah it's sickening!).

Happy New Year!

NHJ - that's great using a graduate loan to buy your Porsche! Did you get any flack from parents/friends/girlfriend etc!? Inspirational.

chriscoates - thanks for your reply! That's brilliant you've managed to pull it off on a similar wage! Haha as I was reading, I thought you were going to say when your girlfriend got pregnant you had to get a Golf or something, not upgrade to a 996 turbo! Good wife.

gsewell - I have just switched my ISA to Nationwide as they allow you to split your ISA so I opened a help to buy ... thanks for the pointer though.

SEE YA - very cool car! Perfect looking.

edc and andy97 - I do love 986 Boxsters, but it's not reaaallly what I want as what would be a daily driver. I'm not ruling it out completely but not right now.

Thanks Sparta6 - I know, I have some friends that I know could never get away with buying a Porsche - I'm glad I haven't drawn that short straw.
