Registering imported car with DVLA: CoA or Letter of origin?

Hello, just in case anyone has done this - and before I have a confusing phone conversation with DVLA..
I have imported a euro spec '79 911SC from California, and only have a bad photocopy of the original German registration document plus the surrendered california title.
I need to prove date of registration and would be happy to join PCGB and get a free CoA if that would work..however, not sure if this will be acceptable to DVLA and so am also looking at the 'Letter of origin' that Porsche can supply (for 65 quid..).
Any advice on this specific point anyone?
Also it looks like my car is exempt for proof of type approval (over 10 years old) so I don't think I need a certificate of origin (another 100 quid!). Can anyone confirm this too?

Thanks for that..but I'm afraid that article, like lots of info around this, is getting mixed up with what is needed.
For instance I have just confirmed with DVLA that because the car is over 10 years old, they don't need evidence of type approval - which is what the Certificate of conformity is for (currently £105 from Porsche).
So I just need proof of first registration, which, again from Porsche UK site, looks like it needs to be a Letter of Origin, at £65. I just can't see why a CoA won't work instead, and I#d rather have a CoA as I can get it free as a PCGB member..(and its a nicer thing to have in a frame, even if it is a hi res copy - DVLA keep everything you send them).

Just done this, you need the letter of origin. The rest of the info is in most reference books on the model you have. The Bentley book on the SC is the best
