After checking the likes of Autotrader for 98 996's , I contacted a reputable Porsche Specialist who I trust, to give advice on prices, serviding costs etc. Taking into account this specialist also sells cars for customers, when avaiable, there was no reason for him to not tell the truth of the following.

When I asked the price to buy a 98 model 996 with circa 60K miles, I was told that a really good one could be had for £18-20K !!! I did mention that all the cars I see advertised are £23K+ , but his response was "too much" plus the 996 prices are dropping in similar fashion to Boxsters recently. Upon asking the question of which model car to get to minimise future depreciation, his response was that decent 993's are nwo fetching more money than older 996's & the feeling is they will retain more money long term. He did point out that i need to see & drive a 993 vs a 996 to see if I like it, as different cars.

Like I said, the guy is reputable (I know others with cars / servicing from him).....he didn't have any cars to sell me, so no point him trying to push me down the wrong track etc. I have left him my details to try & source me a car at the mo..... as he's set an expectation of price that currently no private sellers would want to hear

Wondered what others thoughts are on the subject ?

Ah, an emotive subject then..... noob raises wrong question From what I read on here & elsewhere it would seem the 993 is more hardcore than 996. I did drive a 996 this w/e & loved it, so be interesting to try the 993. Personally be happy to own either, just want to make sure I pay the right money so I don't cry (too much) when I go to sell it again

Well I'll be doing a 250 mile round trip in a day, once a week for work , so any 993 owners past & present advise if it's comfortable on that mileage ? I'm sure the 996 would do it with ease, from the short drive I had.

Not so worried about space, as I'll be in car on my own 99% of time. Missus has the sensible car Just wanted to make sure ride quality, seat support etc were up to that mileage in one day, without crippling me I still have to function at the end of the drive ..lol

Thanks again for all the replies. Good advice re exhaust, as I removed the race can on the Motorbike I had this summer....sounded great , but a) drew too much attention & b) very tiring on the old lugs

Get the feeling I will end up owning both models at one point or another. If I get the 993 I get the ultimate driving buzz, but then will get a 996 cuz it has more creature comforts. If I get a 996 I'll possibly crave that rawer drive at some point & then will get a 993 !! Maybe I should just run now before my wallet takes a hammering lol

Well just went to look at a 993 in a showroom & agree it's a stunning looking car, but for me the interior just wasn't up to what I'm used to, with newer cars. I sat next in a 996 & I felt more at home. I'm sure the 993 is excellent & more raw to drive, but I must be getting old & want those creature comforts. I think if I had a company car & the 911 for fun, then I could be swayed between the two, but to meet all my needs in one car I think 996 is the way forward.

I know if I drove one it might be another matter , but I know when I'm stuck in rush hour traffic for hours on end I'll be wanting that extra bit of comfort

You're a bad influence If I get chance I will try one, but very few around near me. I know I prefer the look of the 993, especially the front....but you only get to see that when you park up Also I haven't got tons of money, so find it hard to spend so much for a car with dated interior (in my eyes)

Never easy is it ?
