Cluster gone on 6 year old Boxtser - a known problem?

We have a 6 year old (owned from new) Boxster and our display cluster was intermittently flickering on and off, and then pretty much went off full time. It was also draining the battery so not much good at all. A well know Porsche dealership have now come back and said £1100 plus VAT for a new one.

Is this a known problem? Is there anything I can do. No Christmas at our house this year!!

That's a good place to know of but we want to retain our Porsche history. I am really trying to find out if this is a common problem and if the price quoted bears any semblance to reality!

"Just have the cluster fixed elsewhere" OK, just a bit nervy about going elsewhere! So anyone recommend a good independant garage in West London?
