Right I am sat here in my flame proof suit in readiness for the flaming I am out to get so here goes

I have decided that its time for a change as I have had my 993 for ages and I fancy something different either a 997 cab or 355 / 360 spider.

About a month ago those very nice people from Porsche offered me an extended test drive which I have take them up on having spent some time with the 997( 997 4s cab) now I must say it goes, stops and generally perform much better than my 993 but and here is the but it just seem so dull.

I really really wanted to like it as I am sure with the other route lies financial ruin and heartache and I really didn’t want to be one of those beardy driving pipe smoking people who say “oh they don’t make them like they used to do” but no matter how I look at it or drive it its just dull in fact my old 968’s more fun.

Now don’t get me wrong it is a great car it really is and I can seriously see why people would buy it and I know its been very successful but it just seems like any other car to me i.e. bmw merc etc

So whats the answer have I test driven the wrong model ? anyone else gone from the 993 to the 997 with any better views ?

Umm so I am not the only one I had a 996 for a little while (it was a cab though) it was ok but just prefered the 993 I was hoping that the 997 would have been more interesting

My mum has the new 987 its really not for me and unusually for a mum she is quite a good driver, sub 9 mins at the ring !!!

She used to race when she was younger and hasn't really worked out that she has to slow down on the roads yet !!

In fact the whole family is car mad even my granny had an original rs500 cosworth when she was in her 70's, now that was scary !!!!!!!!!!

Lots of very interesting replies here just to clarify my position.

I am certainly not saying that a 993 is better than the 997. As I said in my original post the 997 I had went, stopped infact did every thing better than my 993 (well except that you had to hold the key to close the roof where as one click non the 993 button and it closes its self ... minor I know)

And if I only had one car then it would probably be a 996 turbo soft top but the second would probably be a 997 2s cab but having just dropped the 997 back I am not missing it and whilst I had it I never looked fondly at it, where as soon as I come home I cant help looking at the 993 I even miss the damm thing when it goes in for a service !!!! Sad but true

I think me real point is that I feel a bit stuck I want to move into the 21st century but when I tried it I was disappointed I remember when I was a kid all I wanted was a 911 or a Ferrari (after the arena posters)

I can remember the first time I drove a 911 ( 3.0sc ) it was just not like anything else I had ever driven the same with the Ferrari in fact I remember doing nothing but stalling both of them on the first drives if I am honest !!!!

Now I took our rs4 to the dealer when I went yesterday got out of that and got into the Porsche and thought well there is really no difference here!! And I was quite looking forward to getting the rs4 back today sad but true.

And that’s it in a nut shell when I am comparing an Audi estate to a 911 either I am getting old or Porsche are missing a trick

p.s. Re lots of respect to my slightly deranged family ... well to give you some context my mother's only comment on the 997 whilst on a very slippery roundabout with all the traction bit turned on and at about 50mph was " why does this stupid thing keep under steering " ....aghhhhhhhhh
