Exhaust Mod on 996
Discussion
Just wanted to share my experiences of late with people. I know that sports exhausts are one of the most common customisations that people on here do to their pride and joy and since buying mine just over a year ago, I have been constantly researching the options available to me. After the having a PSE fitted to My Boxster S, I knew that I needed a little more of a rumble on the 996.
Having narrowly missed out on a few ebay auctions I started looking into alternatives and liked the look of the Oettle job. This is a company in Germany that will modify the standard boxes, so that some of the exhaust bypasses the silencers. I have read a lot about it on Boxa.net and heard some of the results and liked it.
Anyway, I finally took the plunge yesterday and went down to Hayward and Scott (I am in no way associated with this company). They made a similar modification to my standard exhausts. I was in and out within a couple of hours and am really pleased wioth the results.
It's not as loud as the sports exhaust, but has a nice low rumble and sounds great on acceleration. Although when cruising at motorway speeds it isn't that much different to before the modification.
I know this wont increase the power and may still replace with sports exhaust at some point in the future but it was a lot cheaper than a full sports exhaust and I am very pleased with the result.
I have tried to include some image files below (first time posting images, so forgive me if they don't work).
And here is a little video of the sound whilst stationary on my driveway:

Hope this is useful to people, feel free to ask me anyquestions if you are interested.

Hendy,
Just out of interest did you have to supply brackets / bolts to Hayward and Scott? I spoke to them some time ago and they said I would need to supply these myself (my car is a 99 C2 and the bolts etc will no doubt need cutting off).
Maybe they are now offering this as part of their drive in service?
Thanks

I didn't have to supply any bolts at all. I think they reused the originals, but couldn't be sure.Just out of interest did you have to supply brackets / bolts to Hayward and Scott? Hendy, I thought when I started to read this that you'd done the mod to the GT3...
No, it's a very old thread that got revived yesterday. I did consider something similar with the GT3, but I failed the static noise test last year at Bedford in the GT3 with the stock exhaust, so I think the only viable option is the switchable PSE if I want to continue tracking it.Gassing Station | Porsche General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
