Parking the Tuscan at home this evening (bit of a game of musical cars as we have 5 on the drive) the gear lever came loose and now does not select any gears! Just waggles around aimlessly.

Easy fix or big job?

Thanks for the reply. I had rather hoped that it was a selection problem rather than an internal gearbox issue. Something for the weekend then.......

Great. Thanks for the step by step guide. I just hope that there is no way the errant screw can escape to the outside world!

Ok thanks again. Its a September 2000 model so reasonably early.

Ok people I have dug my way in and found that my September 2000 mk1 has a single bolt holding the gear lever shaft. But it seems to be in place and doing its job as the entire lever came off in my hand like this.....

The centre console on mine was held in place by a screw under the ash tray and a screw under the rear vent. A piece of flexible hose that is probably supposed to feed the rear vent was just lying loose with no apparent place to be fitted onto.

Only just got to look at this problem closer this weekend due to work commitments. It would appear that one of the lugs, labelled 'C' below is actually broken and came off in my hand. This means that the lock ring on the gear level has nothing to locate into and as soon as you move it rearwards it comes off. So thats it then, the box will have to be removed and repaired but not until the Spring as the car has had plenty spent on it this year.
