Lighting earth points..grr

So in preparing to sort out all of the remaining niggles, a new one reared it's head last week.
The near side headlight and sidelight both wouldn't come on at all. A 30second drive seemed to jolt the dipped beam enough to shake it into action but the sidelight was still out.
Presuming that this is an earth fault somewhere, does anyone know which earth point it's likely to be.
The near side rear brake bulb also keeps blowing, so I'm hoping it might also be on a shared earth?
Having recently got married, and paid a hefty bill for a throttle/lambda problem to be resolved, I'm trying to avoid booking it in again as I know electrical issues can eat into the labour time!
Anyone had anything similar?
