Hi guys, I'm going to view 2 mk1 Tuscans at the weekend all being well, both are listed in the classifieds on here.

One is cheap with a Cat D history which (providing it checks out ok) I am not worried about, and it offers a lot more for the money (engine rebuild, decat, spoilers, geometry done etc), however I'm not sure about the paint colour. The other is £6k dearer and from a dealer, I love the colour but it appears bog standard albeit with FSH. As this has done 45k on (I assume) standard engine, should I be prepared for a rebuild soon, as most out there seem to have already had major engine work done.

The cheap cat d car offers loads and looks good but if I don't fall in love because of the colour then I could regret it!

Any general advice please?!?

Thanks,
TC

Thanks for the words, is the difference in handling down to spacers, tweeks etc (i.e. can early cars be adjusted?)

The rebuild in the cheaper car was to red rose spec I am told, but it was done early on and has done at least 20,000 miles since, so you are correct in that it can't be classed as a fresh build.

I'm really looking forward to seeing both! If the colours were the other way round I'm sure I'd only be going to look at one though..!!

Does anyone know about the history of T55CAN? It's a dark grey mk1 that has since had the private plate removed, it looks in very good nick but yet to take it out on the road, just wondered if it is known at all?

I BOUGHT IT!

First Tuscan, the titanium grey (sort of) colour one. Colour looks amazing, interior is very smart minus a couple of bits of trim that need looking at, and to top it off one of the carbon cans fell off on the sliproad from the M25 to the A12 frown

So now I have a throbbing right ear and a car that would wake up a whole city if booted at night (or anything over idle).

I can't wait to get it in the workshop to have a fiddle, check wheels and geometry etc (is a bit twitchy and vibrates) but I'm a happy boy.

Thanks for the advice, I just had to have it in the end, the Topaz Blue is a lot nicer in the flesh which was a pleasant surprise too for anyone in the same boat as me, but I preferred the darker one.

Cheers,
TC

Thanks all.

I'll have loads of questions to ask- like if the front wheel spacers I have seen are necessary, if I can actually have some form of suspension on the car (it has new GAZ shocks which must just be solid bars by the feel of it!), tweeking door hinges etc.

Down side is that I'm away to Amsterdam this weekend so can't play!!

Hi, it is dark metallic grey, I haven't actually looked for the official colour!

The dealer I bought it from have so far been very good, already finding a replacement can for me and a pair of tyres which are damaged.

The more I look the more minor defects it has, but I was expecting it! The trim around the top inside windscreen has come unstuck for a few inches, I'll have to try and evo-stick it back I think, the pod on top of the speedo has come loose so again got to find out how to fix it back the the speedo.

Picking it up in central London (inside the congestion zone) at 3pm was possibly the worst thing I could have ever done, aching feet from the heavy pedals of 3 hours crawling home! I think 2 hours of sitting almost still in traffic was a good test, I'm already getting the wheels re-balanced as miles out which wouldn't have helped the shaking on the way home. Whilst off I'll pop the recommended 3mm spacers on the fronts, and also check the battery and clean/grease the terminals and fit the new anderson connector (supplied!).

Really looking forward to tinkering and driving this!

Oh also I noticed the GAZ shocks are adjustable so I will definitely be softening them up a little so my teeth survive the next outing smile

The Gaz I have fitted have only one adjuster knob so not two way adjustable. I'll wind them down and go from there!

Is there a cheaper place to buy the 3mm wheel spacers from than the TVR specialists who want nearly £30 for a pair? (I know its not breaking the bank but seems a lot for 2 thin spacers!)

Those generic ones seem terrible and I wouldn't want to run them, I'll just buy the good ones!

Found my front wheels are over 90 grams out of balance... no wonder I had vibrations!

New tailpipes turned up today, they feel a bit lighter than the originals but very similar, here's the difference if anyone cares!

How do you tell? They are not sleeved and look almost identical to the old one(s) inside and out? That said I have been told by everyone that they can hear me coming a mile away! Is not bad inside the cabin though.

p.s. I have noticed a very minor misfire at around 4-5k, I want to put a new set of HT leads on to rule them out, Racetech and Powers Performance online shops both sell "upgraded or performance" sets for around £55, any recommendations?

It's barely noticeable, the cost of driving it back to central London and returning, then the same to collect for me is far more hassle than just spending a few quid on parts.

It hasn't caused a problem yet, and the 2 people I had in the car with me so far couldn't even notice, I think I am more in touch with cars than a lot of other people so often feel things before they are obvious it seems!

They do indeed sound awesome!

I have a list of things to do once I have finished driving it every day over Christmas, in a couple of days I'll put it back inside, clean it and get back to work, then I want to address the following items:

- Get some heat proof matting and cover the bonnet above the exhaust manifold due to paint beginning to suffer

- Figure out how to re-stick the speedo top leather trim back on as it has come away and just loose

- Play with rubber seal around top of windows as flock head lining is wet at the corners when it rains etc

- Clean a few tiny glue marks off some of the leather where stitching has shrunk or moved

- Replace anderson plug with a new one (already have one) to rule out any dangerous shorts in that area

They are not perfectly round, I watched them being spun up on the balancer and may have been a couple of mm out. They were around 90 grams out of balance and I have to say there is almost no vibration what-so-ever now with them being balanced properly, even though they don't run perfectly true.

I'm loving it so far, it gets so much attention as well but for the right reasons, people smile when they see it, I think if I had bought a V8 Vantage people would just think I'm a spoilt twit and a snob!

I'm going to have to book a track day to get the most out of it, on the road it behaves pretty well but it appears the straight six is only really happy when it is pulling! It is a bit lumpy when ticking along, but sweet when I open it up.

Any ideas about this? It's the small side panel that is permanently fixed to the roof panel, at the rear it looks to have come away as the gap is larger and is not fixed solidly. I'm not sure how they are assembled etc?

Also under the main bonnet there is a patch of insulation, the bitumen and aluminium 1mm thick type. I assume this was fitted to prevent heat damage to the paint from the exhaust manifolds, however there is minor paint damage and I do not believe this type is very effective. I was actually wondering about making a stainless heat shield, held between the manifolds and bonnet on brackets, but this may be tricky to do.
