So my 2000 car with 40K already rebuilt at 20K does sound fairly grim now. Out with my son today who is a very lucky lad works at a well known prestigious Engine building business in Shoreham in Sussex. He does know how to re build it.

My thoughts were where could I best get all the parts if I set him to it ?

Thanks

The company in Shoreham were, allegedly, involved in trying to make the Sp.6 engine Euro4 compliant when Mr. Smolenski owned TVR.

...Guess that's about 10 years ago now, but there may be folks around who worked on the TVR engine. In any event I would have thought that an outfit with that sort of reputation, should be well able to rebuild the engine.

Thanks you are absolutely correct the place is full of people who have worked on and have rebuilt the engines, however interestingly enough very few of them as standard rebuilds. Think I may remove the engine in the spring and get my son and his work mates to take a look at it.

As my mind goes on thinking about this, do the rebuilt engines sound less like sewing machines, or does the head assembly even in good order and all those chains, make for a mechanically loud engine.

So
After a quick inspection of the cams at the weekend , that actually look good, I was greeted with some serious chunks out of the rocker cover where the chains pass over the cam sprockets. The chain appears very noisy and there seems to be no adjustment left so I have decided it will all come out and I will rebuild it with the help of my son.

The engine does not really use oil but the cam and followers sound appalling especially when revving hard and the chains on the front equally noisy.

I will post up a picture of the cam cover tonight, I assume all the lost material is safely in the oil filter !! Not...

Ignore the wide ground area, this was a previous attempt to counter interference, look at the two new deep groves, I think thicker oil and a big magnet on the oil filter will sort it no problem !

So finally engine out after a bit of a delay starting the project and the first of what will no be many questions to those who have done it before.
Can I put it on an engine stand ? It looks tall and long to be supported by four bolts into the block. Is this what you did ?
I want it on a stand so I can turn the engine more measuring and marking up before I take it all apart.

Great, thanks for the pics and keep the advice coming. I will have the engine on a stand tomorrow and strip some more down before the measuring begins. Apparently I am going to have a build book so my son tells me so everything is measured and recorded. I will provide pics as it comes apart.

I need to buy a big timing discs all the internet ones look small accept the Moroso one at £60 !!

In the meantime, these cats may cause me to think through some options when they go back in or not in a few months time.

Thanks a trip to Uxbridge it is, I used them for years with Chevy engines and forgot about them.

So next challenge the balancer seems to be very keen to remain with the engine. They do not seek an amicable separation. I fear bigger tool needed ! What did you use ?

Man wins battle with engine balancer. Well it came off , three wheel puller heavy duty 5 tonne one and about 1.5 metres of bar
