I wonder if Ford have been listening to my moaning on the lack of any decent engines for the Mondeo?

No interesting engines since they got rid of the 2.5T in 2010, it's about time they put something decent in it again.

Now, fingers crossed it's got a manual gearbox option if it comes to the UK!

I do wish they'd make a properly hot Mondeo, current crop isn't quick enough. I'm saying this as an owner of a 240PS Ecoboost Mondeo Estate as well, which I love for all round duties, but just feels like it needs more grunt.
Should have got the 2.5T. wink

The 2.0T has more power and probably quicker at the top end but in the midrange doesn't have a patch on the 2.5T. Plus it's auto-only.

I'd still have liked a properly quick version though, it's basically as quick as a lukewarm hatch (eg Focus STD, Golf GTD etc).

Focus STD? laugh
I know, they're very careful to call it the Focus ST diesel but really what else did they expect!

Although having looked up the specs of the STD it appears I'm wrong, my Mondeo estate is a reasonable amount quicker than the STD.

I would *so* buy one with a V8. Probably unfortunately one of only about 5 people who would though which is why they don't make them.

>100k diseasels and ~1k 2.5T's which would you bother with if you were Ford?

I occasionally smoke around in a 2.5T. They are superb machines and IMO very underrated! If I had any sense whatsoever I've have bought one over the M3 as a daily. £1k with one of those takes you up to 300BHP as well with stacks of torque smile.
It's not slow even as stock. I love mine as a daily. Cheap to run (apart from it eats tyres), reliable, comfortable, lovely to drive and quick.

Evo reviewed it and said it was "almost certainly nicer to drive than pretty much any Audi bar the RS4" but that no one would buy it and would buy the car with the posher badge.

This. There was very little demand for the 2.5Ts. When I occasionally drive the 2.5T people at work or in some of my circles say

"it's a bit meaty sounding, is it not a diesel?"

I then reply:

"It's a 2.5T ; The Volvo engine" (it actually has Volvo coils and Volvo written on practically even part!).

"You must be nuts ; that must cost you a fortune on fuel!"

"Yes ; around 25+MPG around town and 35MPG on a run"

"My Mondeo 2.0 can do 70MPG..."
Yep, same as. 25mpg round town and 34-37mpg on a run. Given that I only do <2.5kpa personal miles frankly I don't give a stuff about doing 70mpg. It's all about how nice the engine is and the 2.5T is a peach (although a little bit more top end would be nice).

The top end pull is my main gripe. Below 4k it's lovely! I wonder if a remap would sort it but my gut says it's a turbo sizing issue.
Yep. You can get more power up to about 5k but its then more noticeable that peak torque is way down low.
See a ST225 remap with the same engine for example.

Wants a new turbo if you want more top end (and as they are the same as the ST225 and RS they are available if you want) but in honesty for day to day I'm happy with the 1500-4500. It's a work horse not a sports car.

As for the tyres, go with Goodyear Eagle F1s. We am getting close to 20k out of them. It came with A2s on the front at 125k. At 147k, we went over to the A3s.
I have. Just gone from A2's to A3's. I don't get 20k out of them though. smile
