My starter has died.. What are my options? Can it be rebuilt DIY? New uprated one? Anyway to test what exactly is wrong with this one?

Symptoms were.. No start (obviously), solenoid signal getting 12v, I can hear the starter solenoid clicking (I think, relay under the dash working obviously as it is switching 12v to the signal wire) but nothing from the starter. Pulled the starter and there is quite a bit of play in the pinion. Tried the usual jump etc.. But nothing at all.

I've seen a local company offering rebuilt 2.4kw starters with a 12 month guarantee. London and Essex Auto electrics.

The terminals were tight when I removed it. If the cable was getting a voltage drop it would at least turn over albeit laboured surely? It was working fine one minute, not at all the next time I went to use it. I think the solenoid may have died..

I can't find a good source for rebuilt kits with Google'ing only complete starters seem to be cropping up.

I guess I could put 12v on the main lead and touch 12v on the signal to see if it fires out of the car.

If you haven't tested one before, make sure it's secure before you connect it smile

I can imagine not secured might be quite an eye opener..!
