Just minced 5th gear on the M11..
Discussion
Thanks guys,
I'm really not well versed in the difference between the std and short ratio either Alistar, I'll have to do a bit of reading to fully understand it and choose the strongest option I guess.
I'm less inclined to think it was play on the input shaft Paul, but I could be wrong as I've no real frame of reference. However, I had the box out earlier this year and removed the input shaft cowl/retainer to tap it for an anti rotation shoulder bolt for the tilton slave. I remember seeing the shims and checking for play once it was back together. It did feel ok, I think it was just me driving the stones out of it.
It's just fifth Will, but tbh 4th was a bit iffy anyway. Getting the gearbox out after running the tilton slave for a while will be interesting as well though. I'll be able to see how it looks and see if there are any signs of a leak at all. Plus I'll be able to find out how different removing the gearbox with the new slave is.
I wonder what the Tuscan challenge cars use?

Looking at the ratios on the Quaife website.
http://quaife.co.uk/optimise-your-t5-gearbox/
I decided to go for the std wide ratios as I prefer the longer 5th.

Yes exactly that.
The long 1st is fantastic and the closer 2nd, 3rd and 4th are brilliantly spaced. The powerband is perfect.
5th is shorter and on the motorway it means around 3200rpm for 70mph (gps) as opposed to 3000rpm with the std longer original. But shortening it brings it closer to 4th.
It's a different car!

If you go for a Quaife upgrade from CTS the ratios you choose (wide or close) will make no difference wrt noise as both gearsets have the same helical angle.
I have a second hand close ratio Quaife build T5 from CTS. It's in my car now.
It whines. But it's a nice whine. Like the whine of a supercharger. And as you accelerate the engine and road noise drown it out.
For me, it sings, in an indestructible way
Happy to let anyone have a spin up the M11.
Just pm me.

CTS is Competition Transmission Services.
i.e. gearboxman
The Quaife gearsets for the T5 are exclusive to CTS and can only get them through them.
And the stamp each T5 casing with a build number so you can find out the build details.
ETA: they're a really nice bunch of guys at CTS.
I blew a diff, they had previously rebuilt for me, on my way to Berlin two years ago. I had the car repatriated to their workshop from Germany. Bernie simply called me when it was ready to collect.
