Hi chaps. I recently had my 4.5 in for sercice and a few small jobs where it was noticed that 2 of the standard induction pipes were wrecked. I have already replaced 2 and have found you can no longer purchase them individualy. Any how long story short Ive bitten the bullit and bought one of those act induction kits. (£488) same price as i was quoted for original induction pipes!! I hadnt realy budgetd for this so am gonna fit it without the chip or re map for now. Anyone out there ran one of these kits without proper map?? the car also has no cats. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Ta lads.

Get a remap if you have short induction. Or buy some ACT long intake pipes or some good condition ones from ebay?
HAVE purchased short induction kit.

If you can hear it detting your mad to continue using it untill it's remapped.
That's one way to knacker an engine.
If it were running I may hear detonation but as mentioned in the original post I have purchased the kit and am yet to install it.
Thank you for the concern though and i am aware of pinking engines and the damage to pistons it can cause.

I am not overly familiar with the management used on the ajp8 4.5 but would imagine it would have scope on its standard map to cope with an increase of airflow that a revised induction set up may produce. How otherwise does it work with greatly varying ambient intake temeratures ie freezing (read as) dense air and the oposite being red hot with a relatively low oxygen content. though aware it may not yeild the same results as a custom map.

Unfortunately it can't, its an "Alpha N" management system, a race car system as JensenA said. Basically it only looks at rev's and throttle position to calculate how much fuel to injected, there's some compensation in the form of intake temp and obviously lambda feedback but it doesn't measure air flow directly.

Therefore when you fit the short induction, the engine is able to scavenge more air (increased volumetric efficiency) and therfore requires extra fueling, but because of no remap, the engine thinks its still standard and will fuel as for standard.

Also, better volumetric efficiency could mean less timing advance would be required. But if you're running the standard map, you'll be on the original timing advance and hence the pinking frown

Obviously this is over simplified, I expect the standard map runs rich at WOT and better fuel might help the pinking, also its only going to cause problems when you're driving it hard and at high rev's.

Anyone know if Raceprove can offer a short induction kit and remap at low low Joolz prices, I've got a 4.5 here crying out for one smile

Rich.

Thanks for that. I had better start saving again!! Where is best for a map session I live in the Norh East. P.s how much does a map ses cost usualy?

Have had an interesting day with some contradictory advice given from well known tvr tuning outfits. The problem is arising in the fact I live Near Newcastle and allthough a re-map at austec would be the best solution all round, I cant find £881.25 for the re map, £150 for petrol and £150+ for accomadation food, drinks etc etc not to mention the time off work(self employed). Ive looked in my arse and its just not there. Bare in mind Ive just spent a grand on getting it back on the road after 18 month sitting in my garage. Any how nobodys problem but mine!
I have been told by one company they can supply a "safe" chip by post to fit to the ecu to get me going. I have been told by the other firm(who supplies the chips any way)that its not feasible to do this as there is a good chance the sent chip(map) will be no good either.
I have just (tonight) checked out raceproveds web site. They mention emerald ecu mapping, but do they work on the cerbera set up aswell?? Shefield is a hell of a lot closer then austec. I could get there and back in a day.

Cheers

How many of the long purple pipes are shot? I've got six or seven lying around
spotted them in the shed earlier. If you need them could send them out to you.
Whilst a generic chip would certainly be safer, it won't be ideal as it won't be bespoke
to suit your engine and exhaust system.
Thankyou Ill bear that in mind. Wish I had posted something earlier! induction kit is all bought and paid for. Wasnt even that bothered about doing it, was forced into it realy cause of lack of original pipes!!!

If money is tight then sell your pipes on or wait till you can afford it? Get some 2nd hand ones for time being maybe?
But if money is really that tight then I suggest saving your money for when repairs are required as opposed to tuning that isnt necessary etc (nort withstanding your immediate issue)..
Raceproved I am sure can provide a generic chip or can map the car for you - they have the best known Cerb tuner on the planet.
They have a reasonable hrly rate and they are 100% straight - so you will get great value.
Have spoke to jules at raceproved this morning. Very nice chap. Hope to get the car mapped soon. Far more helpfull than some others i have delt with. (not act they were good also).
Thanks to everybody who has tried to help. I will post before I do anything else to my cerb in future!!

Hello once again. A rather important development has occured in the continiuing saga of my induction set up. It turns out that the "short induction set up that my garage had ordered turns out to be a uprated standard set!! Hence the low price I quoted earlier. This happened due to a missunderstanding somewhere along the line between the garage and suppliers. I now was faced with purchasing a full set of standard pipes when I only wanted 2 or indeed be putting the money towards the short kit. My garage cant send the pipes back so they offred to sell them via e-bay. This was avoided by them being extremely fair about the whole situation and have absorbed almost 50% of the cost of the new pipes. Therefore although I do not have the modification work done I am not going to be financially strained or have the problem as outlined originaly (re-map requirements).
I have however now allowed myself to dream of more ponies that are obviously there to be released. So I shall be saving my pennies and delivering my car to be fitted with short kit and mapped all at the same time!!!

Please note the induction pipes purchased were not bought from ACT and it was not a missunderstanding involving them or raceproved.
Many thanks to Tim at ACT and Jules at racecraft for all there advice and time. I dare say you will be getting some of my money before the summers up!!
Thanks also to my garage Paul stabler(01325367855) who has been very helpful and a pleasure to deal with and continiues to care for my TVR to the highest standards. If your in the North you wont go far wrong with your servicing or repair needs with Paul and all at a very competitive rates.

If you have standard suspension on your car - I'd say spend your cash getting that sorted before you get a re-map.
I fitted some gaz golds while the car was off the road and paul has been setting them up for me while in for its service.
