Maserati 3200 Assetto Corsa or Gransport
Discussion
I have been looking at 3200's and have also found a nice Assetto Corsa.
The only downside seems to be that it's an auto. 4 speed auto seems pretty old fashioned these days... However, quite a few people say it suits the car, and there are less likely to be crankshaft endfloat issues with an auto.
Any fans of the Assetto Corsa/past owners? I like the 3.2 biturbo, rear lights etc.
If I was to really push my budget then I can go for a gransport.
This is supposed to be a much "better" car?
I'm buying for pleasure, but maybe the gransport is a better investment too?

I'm looking for a fun and usable weekend car.
Plan to do some long trips in the UK and Europe.
Assetto Corsa's (or standard later 3200's) can be had for 15-18K and Gransports seem to be at least 25k, quite a big difference.
The Gran Turismo has never interested me: seems like a much bigger car and I have read that the extra weight blunts the performance of the 4.2....

Thanks guys.
I have registered on Mports Maserati.
The somewhat savage 3200 delivery does appeal, but really need to try both a manual and an auto.
And now i've been momentarily distracted by TVR Cerebra Speed Sixes....!

Ok I'll try again ! A copy didn't come through to me either. Usual PH mail service then! Just been informed that the PH mail service is borked. Could post my mail address on here so we can contact each other if you would like? This is starting to sound a bit pervy!
Yes nothing came through. If it's one of the advertised carsyou are talking about, I have been scanning the classified daily.Edited by 3200gt on Wednesday 20th January 10:51
I've now been to see 3 cars, and have another to arrange.
I also tested a gransport, which was to be honest a disappointment.
Not for me, a bit disappointing really.
The engine felt torque light and did not sound that great to my ears, even with sport engaged. Gearbox also felt quite slow witted.
Did not like the side skirts either.
It did feel like it would handle nicely.
Anyway, this was very useful as it proves to me that I prefer the 3200. The 3200 just feels and looks, and sounds more special to me. When those turbos come on boost it makes you smile!

Well, I've had the car for about 2 days now and I'm loving it!
Picked the car up from another member who could not have been better to deal with.
I did a 5.5 hour drive back, and was comfortable apart from my feet on the pedal box after a while, pedal box is cramped and at a weird angle.
I love the sense of occasion and have been impressed by how stable and planted the car feels on the motorway.
Outside of the motorway I've spent half of my time at varying degrees of yaw angle!
Exiting the M6 toll in Sport was the first time, splayed 45 degree sideways despite accelerating from roll and in a straight line.
I then took my father up the road once home, and it was cold and wet. When trying to demonstrate the on boost acceleration on the bypass you can imagine she got a bit squirrely quite a few times to say the least!
So, I absolutely love it! Sounds great as it has straight through rear pipes on an otherwise standard exhaust.
It's a very raw and rewarding car to drive!
I have been teetering round the corners a bit as I get used to it - a hot hatch was trying to goad me the other night when it was 2 degrees c and wet - I did't take the bait after 5 hours of driving, and concious that this car needs respect.
I've driven lots of on paper quicker cars, but this feels like pretty much most lairy car I have driven.
I think other road users will have no idea how hard and with how much concentration you need to drive this thing quickly.
Makes me smile

It has some Nokian Tyres on the back, plenty of tread, but probably a few years old, and not the greatest tyre when new no doubt. And then Falkens on the front.
I don't think its done many miles at all on them, but they might be 4-5 years old.
I shall be treating her to a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 - should tame the beast a little!
In fairness it's not too bad on the current boots if it's nice and dry, but you still need to have your wits about you.

That surprises me as My Pilot Super Sports on the BMW M135i lasted an incredible 18,000 miles, despite lots of abuse.
My experience has always been that Michelin tyres last longer than nearly all other brands....
When I had a MK2 Focus RS I was getting about 6K per set of front Continentals, but that's pretty commonplace....

Father has C63 Estate with LSD, 70,000 miles, haven't heard him complain, think he gets about 8-10,000 a set....
2000 miles is quite an achievement Love the C63
Just did a search...http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=96&t=1493625

Another reminder for me to be careful with the sport button...!
The thing is though, because mine is an Auto, that button is pretty compulsory for when you are trying to press on.
I like the idea of the manual, but there are those crank end float horror stories, and even the reviews when new said that the manual was not co-operative and suffered from drive line shunt.
(I have two Autocar reviews of the Assetto Corsa when new)
Surprising considering it's a Getrag shared with BMW M cars.
Most of all, as with all of these things, I took advantage of the right car coming up at the right time, there aren't many about and the condition is great.

Still loving this car. The Michelin PS4 tyres and a full re-alignment have transformed the car.
The alignment has to be done by using shims, so not a five minute job. It was quite a lomng way out.
It now handles very nicely, cornering flatly and with a nicely pointy turn in.
I've also got used to the gearbox more now, on back roads I simply put it into 3 instead of D to stop it going into 4th, and sometimes even 2 for maximum punch.
The turbo power and chirruping is great fun
The looks from the front are fantastic too, lower bonnet with vents etc, I much prefer to the later cars.
Add to that a special feeling interior and It's hard to believe how much car I got for the money, it feels really special.
These are so undervalued at the moment - if anyone is umming and erring, I say get one! Just make sure you take the time to find a good one.
