after some specific assistance please from anyone who owns/has owned one of these beasts!

clutch life- how long/how much to replace on average?
magnetic shocks- yes or no, heard some horrendous horror bill stories for odd failed unit
servicing costs and intervals

seen a couple of cars circa £40k with 40-60k miles and pondering what pitfalls may be at that mileage.
cheers

I had a supercharged (APR stage 3) V8 manual for a couple of years.

Had to replace all 4 mag-ride shocks and new front diff plus brakes and tyres.

All maintenance was done by Ricky Elder (now working for himself at http://reperformance.co.uk) who was head R8 technician for Audi for a few years and REALLY knows his stuff.

Give him a shout as he may know of "good" cars coming to market.
very helpful thanks for that

Mag ride does seem to be an extra faff and potential cost.
Insurance quote was surprisingly 380 quid pa on a 45k car. Potential for large bills however is slightly concerning. Wonder if you got a bad un or is it indicative of woes?

Love to but want to stick to budget this time tbh. 40-45k. If it's too much of a minefield at that sort of value because of potentially expensive wallet wrecking bills I would look at something else still.
The 993 has had 8-10k spent on it this year but I bought it knowing what needed doing plus what extra I wanted to do to get it right.
There are loads of good independent inspectors available for 911 reports before buying, is this available for the R8 or better to stick to main dealer sales?

Test driven one today. Lovely driving position. Lovely engine noise, nice drivers car, decent brakes. Could easily see me liking one long term.
This one was non mag suspension and tbh I think I'd go for one over the more complex version just as less to go wrong.
I like how the doors open ultra wide :-)
Lovely gear change and alloy gate, nice B&O stereo. A lot of car for the cash

Viewed 3 locally and driven two. Very impressive cars, nice drive, look superb.
Just a case now of selling my 993 and fining the right spec cherished R8.
Way too many are at second hand backstreet dealers with sketchy history or slightly tired condition. There are some minters out there though in the 45-50k bracket

40k max is pushing it a bit IMHO. 45k would be my bottom line as the ones I viewed at 40k were all a bit stone chipped or tatty. Loads around at dealers around that price point. I did the research and decided I was OK with buying private rather than giving some back Street 2nd hand dealer 5k for basically washing the car. None of the second hand warranty deals will be worth a crap I figured. I've budgeted for a set of coil over or replacemental alternative shocks if the mag ride goes south, but not at an audi dealer.
Touch wood the R8 is possibly the ideal car for me so far, glad I bought one and especially one with lots of extras and an exhaust kit. Go for it if you see the right car!

I don't think it is but you don't see many high miles cars , saying that 60-80k would be considered high mileage I guess. Parts cost are horrendous go into it with your eyes open, it circa 3-4k for a clutch fitted, engine out apparently on v8 for a seized ac pump similar price. Hence low mileage cars attract a premium.

Saying that they are considered one else of the most reliable "supercars" even if some don't class them as one, and are much cheaper to run than other marque's I believe. R8 forum is a Good place to start reading.

I think they are a superb car having had mine a month and would recommend one

Mine were £1800 and are perfect. Also come with a Magnetic Ride delete kit so you don't get the Mag Ride warning on the dash.

The company that refurbishes them are based in Poland and don't reply to emails (from experience). Calls are difficult and they are around £400 per shock to be refurbed anyway.

Anyone reading this thread, just trust me, stay away from there / be prepared to replace them / budget for swapping them out with coilovers.

Hundreds of posts on them in the states.
1800 for coil overs as opposed to mag ride?
My friend is Polish so I may rope him in if everything went Tits up!

Good to hear better options exist. Who did you get them from?
