PT cruiser 2.2 CRD Diesel

Has this engine got a rocker cover as i have been stitched up,i took the plastic cover off and found a lot of black gunk on the engine i think it is covering a crack

so the engine should not be knacked then with a bit of luck ? i have only had the car one week,
it is a 2003 model it started to smell from the air vent. so i have been searching for the smell and when i took the plastic cover off i was not happy
i have only done 48 mile since i purchased it
Thank for your help i will have to find out what the cost will be (not to much i hope)

Thanks i have put calls out already to friends, but what is that black tar all over that area
