Looking for some advice, I bought a 2010 automatic Astra about 6 months ago , it went into limp mode on Friday I took it to my local Vauxhall dealer and they tell me it needs a new gearbox at a cost of £6275 !!!!!! The car has only just done 30,000 miles
I'm rubbish with car stuff but they have found metal shards in the gearbox and Vauxhall are saying they have no idea how they got there and are hinting at driver error !!!

Appreciate any info/help

Many. Thanks

I opened a dispute with Vauxhall today but they have said given the age and the mileage on the car it looks unlikely that they will offer any assistance, I certainly won't be having the work done by them at that stupid price, thanks for you're info

I spoke to the technician at Vauxhall who did the diagnostic testing on it, and he said he had No idea how it could've happened ??? Vauxhall customer services will be speaking to him tomorrow to see if he thinks this is a manufacturing problem, good luck with that one as he doesn't have any idea on how the metal shards could've entered the gear box.

I am the second owner of the car

The radiator hasn't been changed they have said it's ok
No gearbox work has been done yet, it went into limp mode 3 weeks ago I had a diagnostic test done and they said it was the No 1 coil that had gone but as it was an auto they had to replace the coil pack
No leaks and hadn't actually checked the coolant level
I purchased the car in April and it had a service prior to me collecting vehicle , it has been serviced by Vauxhall main dealer since new

Where was the car purchased from? Vauxhall, an independent or a private seller?

I meant to put Independent garage not private seller, they too seem to think its manufacturing problem and that the metal shards are actually pieces from the inside of the gearbox

Wouldn't the supplying Dealer bear some responsibility within six months? It's not an old banger, at this age and mileage.

Tim
That's what I was hoping for but they are not being that helpful as I didn't take out their overpriced extra warranty. They are pretty convinced though that this a manufacturing issue and to keep at Vauxhall , not sure if they're just passing the buck though ?

Their warranty would only add to your rights. Of course they want you to go to Vauxhall, they're worried that you'll ask them to fix it.

This would be my first port of call, not Vauxhall,

Tim
They were my first port of call at first they weren't interested because I didn't have extended warranty , I called them back, asked for a manager and he also said it wasn't up to them and to pursue things with Vauxhall , I will be returning to them though if I get nowhere with Vauxhall

Where did you buy the car from? Is it just under or over 6 months since you bought it? It may be worth pursuing the dealer who sold you the car under Sale of Goods Act if it is less than 6 months as the onus is on them to prove that the car wasn't faulty when they sold it to you. A mention of a report to trading standards may make things happen quicker.

Where are you in Cheshire? It may be worth speaking to AS Autocare in Liverpool, they are an independent Vauxhall specialist who will be able to offer you some proper advice and are a reputable garage.
It will be 7 months at the beginning of December frown . I am based in Nantwich
Thanks for the info though I will get their number and give them a call

Thanks everyone for all the helpful info I received , I've been waiting all week to find out what Vauxhalls contribution if any would be, I got a call from Vauxhall today saying they would cover 100% of the repair bill (£6275) to say I'm ecstatic is an understatement !!!!
